Roger Mellie 4,205 Posted June 15, 2020 Posted June 15, 2020 Up to 2018, the game plan suited Brayshaw and served him very well - chaos ball and get the ball forward. It was perfect for him - just bang the ball forward and rely on the frenzied contest.... That's changed and he can't. Unless he's 5 metres in the clear and running with the play he never, ever looks where he's kicking. I cant think of too many times he's looked for a player outside the contest and he routinely ignores an open player to bang it the boot to no one. Unlike others, I like his skill set and think he's a smart footballer (apart from the defensive running) but he's stuck in chaos ball play (IMO) and doesn't seem able to adjust. I hope he can because he has a lot to offer. 2 Quote

Ideally we could boost his value before years end and move him on for a first round pick. North have a spare early pick, which could be handy.? Or do they have a speedy winger.? Quote

Yeah can't see what people are going with on Hunt, he faded like many but he actually did some important things late to help us scrape over the line. 1 Quote

If we have too many of the one sort trade one out. What if the footy dept is looking at all of them, to see whats best. None of them are best in league. All need to be scrutinised. And in the end, the club will do the right thing, as we have done recently. But its draftees, we need some more speed/class from. I think wingers, to follow thru from Tomlinson/Langers. Draft them now, and 2 - 3 Yrs, they will be ready to replace the older ones. Quote
WA Demon Boy 966 Posted June 15, 2020 Posted June 15, 2020 Gus is such a tough one, because when we're on top he does some decent things and can at time drift forward and kick a few. But he doesn't have any X factor or anything that screams that we hold onto him long-term. He's not quick, isn't a penetrating kick, doesn't win enough of the ball, or great overhead. So really it comes down to: - Where is the best spot to play him? (off the bench I guess?) - Do we trade him for someone younger? Like I said before the game, I'll be keeping a close eye on him. His first quarter was decent then he faded (like the rest of the team) but again he doesn't have any X factor or anything that stands out. He's a mystery right now, but I would be looking at a trade with either WCE or Freo end of year if he doesn't show enough. Everyone is harping on about his 2018, the game has changed since then and each year it's getting quicker and Gus isn't getting any younger. Quote

I was thinking about that. In 2018 Brayshaw's strength was winning the ball from the contest and running with ball in hand before kicking. That penetration and metres gained was really important for us. There seems now to be much less space for players to run into. To get space enough for players to run and carry it has to get to the outside, to the wing. Perhaps that is why they tried him there. Quote

Of course that doesn't factor in to account what role the players are taking on within that system, but I think Gus got at least some run of it in the middle. My concern is more he's surplus of the same type of player more than whether he's completely fallen off the cliff or not. For a team that needs his skillset I'd imagine he'd still do the job. Attended 9 of 19 center clearances on the weekend. Oliver 18 Viney 14 Petracca 14 Brayshaw 9 Jones 2 Quote

Demon3 2,541 Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 So there is a crouch that is likely ti be out of Adelaide at the end of the year and his salary may get them a first round pick.. we dont have a first rounder this year, i would be into teh Crows big time, they would jump at Brayshaw, they are going to go into rebuild mode, they may have 4 first round picks, they will want to go to teh draft but might be a bit sight unseen on picks so doubt they would use 4 picks on young kids. Angus has not become the player we thought, and if he has another so so year, then i think he is expendable. Quote

He was asking for a million per year from Gold Coast, but ended up staying at Crows for 800k to try and move to another club end of this season. Essendon and North appear most interested. He's worth nowhere near what he's being paid and is asking for IMO. If Brayshaw is going to leave it will be to go home to WA. We should've traded with Freo last year when we had the chance. They had two top 10 picks and enough points for a third top 10 pick, and we could've pried one from them. 1 Quote

Maybe Freo, but im not sure of his contract details, if he is contracted then he goes where we send him i suppose.. anyway its all just spit balling, Gus is a considerable watch and act player IMO. whatwhat say what 23,857 Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 (edited) crows wouldn't look at a mid like brayshaw the reason they'll let brad crouch go in the first place is cos they already have enough plodding one-way one-role mids; they want to get rid of one, not replace one with another Edited June 17, 2020 by whatwhatsaywhat 1 Quote

Play him as a mid it’s that simple. This playing people out of their natural positions is killing several players. Frequently, Brayshaw is the runner out of the midfield utilizing Gawny's excellent taps; if not, he is on the spot to receive many handballs from other midfielders (notably Clarrie). Brayshaw, from the midfield, is a clearance man, usually running out of the midfield to distribute the ball forward. When other DL contributors suggest he cannot kick, that would be - in my eyes - an oversimplification. Out forwards are static, time and again. Brayshaw seldom has anyone forward of centre to kick the ball to and very seldom, on 'the lead' - other than the Melk leading out to the flanks from deep in the forward line. This has been a good distribution, time and again. However, its one-way delivery is now readable by opponents. It is used, less often, so far this season. I still rate Gus as a terrific midfielder. I only wish he had the benefit of initiative and support of our forwards. Our forward line over the past few years is so static that opposition defenders have no trouble massing to spoil on alleged, 'key' MFC forwards at their leisure - usually before midfield distribution can be enacted. That is why Hunt and the Melk have been so handy on the forward line - they get to space surprisingly well and quickly. Edited June 17, 2020 by Deemania since 56 Quote

spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Brayshaws 2018 was excellent and he brings a lot to our team. Good mid runner with skills on left and right. dazzledavey36 56,334 Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Saw this by Garry Lyon and I too have been perplexed why all of a sudden he's spending a lot more time on the bench? I felt like out of all our midfielders, he was someone who was clean with the ball and made an impact on the scoreboard. I just don't know why instead of just leaving him on the bench we try him up forward? Melksham is giving us nothing and I find that Gus just shows class when he pushes up forward. https://www.sen.com.au/news/2020/06/28/its-got-me-absolutely-flummoxed-what-is-going-on-with-angus-brayshaw/ 2 Quote

Grimes Times 1,278 Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Gus is in the 2nd rotation mids, hence starting on the bench most quarters and with the shorter quarters the first choice are not coming off as much hence his time is down. 1 Quote
Lord Travis 10,819 Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 He raises a fair point and BT was going on about it during the channel 7 commentary also. Either they limit his time due to his previous concussion issues, or they've not worked out how to best utilize him yet. With Langdon and Tomlinson owning the wings, when Gus is not in the guts he can't be pushed out onto the wing like last season. They obviously don't like him up forward and instead just get him sitting on the bench. Strange player management, but then again this coaching group does some very odd things at the moment. Quote
