For me itโ€™s definitely starting to feel like that is the way to go, less players, harder running/more fatigue should hopefully open up play. The start of this season has been a hard to watch game and risk mitigation and scoring on the counter zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Yep, I've been on this for a while now as well.

The game needs to be updated with the times, players are fitter, tactics more advanced etc. Stephen Hocking and his crew spent years coming up with little tweaks around the edges that were never going to be enough. Something more drastic is needed imo.

Not only would the game be more open, butย list sizes could decrease, and talent would be less diluted than it is now. It could even open the door to new teams if they wanted to go down that path.

I dont like the shortened quarters. This is going to be a very strange season and sadly will be used to justify even more fiddling with the game.ย

My favourite part was the fake cheering after the siren. Donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve everย heard a crowd cheer after a drawn game. Everyone usually sits there confused.

That terrible game made me more excited about our selections, clearly we're going for speed and burst. No point playing a dour, slow and defensive game if you can only muster 5 goals. If we go all out attack and it fails, then chances are we'll only be a goal or 2 down anyway and then have the better chance of quick goals.ย

For mine @Red and Blue realist, both Collingwood and Richmond have incredibly quick players and 'ping' the ball around better than we do. The game wasย dour because of the defensive structures that both clubs (and the top clubs) can commit to time and time again, not due to a lack of speed or burst from the team with the ball.

The question for Goodwin and co, is how do we as a team best break lines and open the game up and beat those structures.

A track watcher alluded to a perceived shift in training that it looks like we have pulled back a bit from the notional play on at all costs methodology. That one is great for breaking lines (but seemingly we kick it over our forwards head or to an out number)... the alternate is to slow it down a bit and be more precise which obviously allows the defensive system of the opposing team to set up.

Quite frankly, I have no idea what the best approach is.

Or...maybe its not as binary as that... anyone (a self appointed coach in waiting?) got some thoughts?

Ive read a few saying it was dull and I have to say I agree. That was a match between arguably the best two vic teams ( at least at this stage) with the most fanaticalย supporters and it was a draw. It should have been at least a fun, enthralling game to watch. It wasnt. I was channelย surfing from midway through the 2nd and even fell asleep for a few minutes in the 3rd. The long breakย at qtr and 3 qtr time was just annoying and having noย crowds isย going to make oursย a very strange game to watch.ย

If Im being honest I felt like an unattachedย ย stranger to the game....A first for me. I wonder how it will be to watch theย dees

I think thereย is a fair amount of overreacting here.

This was only the second seriousย game the sides have played in 9 months. That's like one and a half full pre-seasons and without the usual build up that teams get with a number of pre-season practice matches. Little wonder the skills and ball handling were down and that players were probably quite fatigued in the second half.

Both sides set up extremely well behind the ball and made scoring difficult and it looked like the teams didn't have their usual skill level and energy to break those defensive structures down. Quite understandable given the above.

There were some really good performances in Round 1 - Tigers' first half against the Blues, Pies against the Dogs, Giants against the Cats, etc. - that suggest that there is still going to be plenty of quality football. Just because one game is a defensive slog doesn't mean the whole season is going to be the same.

It was scappy but I enjoyed the contest and intensity, the closeness of the game and the brilliant defending. I've seen better games and I've seen worse games. Part of the beauty of sport is that games are going to look different. The last thing we want to see is 9 homogeneous games per week.ย

ย

Crowd noise needs work

The panel operator needs big buttons. I see an opportunity for up and coming DJs to get the mix right

ย

White buttonย  to boo umpires. Green for goal.ย ย Red for not paying obvious free kicks

Any other suggestions????

Couldn't agree more, Scoop.

A bit of baby-bathwater going on with this one, IMO.

Need an 'out of bounds on the full' button.ย  It was obvious to me that was missing, usually you know if a ball is heading out on the full by the jeering of the crowd.

what about when a player is kicking for goal in the pocket in front of the opposition crowd ?

What colour button and what noise

Needs "ball"!, "Man!" and ironical jeering when 1. ex-player gets it or 2. expensive player finally gets it or a free kick is paid after one team hasnt been getting any.frees.

And certainly needed "In the Back" last night.

No fake crowd noise?

A pink 'chewy on your boot' button?

Also a 'he's been doing it all day button'.

Most DJs turn to water if presented with more than two stereo channels or a gig that that they haven't pre-loaded onto a USB stick, but it really shouldn't be that hard for a professional audio engineer to mix better than last night's game.ย

I dunno, maybe booing/objection sounds have been banned due to creating negativity/hostility towards the umpires or something. Pretty silly though, as that is a huge part of the game's atmosphere whether the AFL like it or not.

The missing crowd-outrage from some of those free kicks (and unpaid ones like Lynch's mark in the last quarter) were extremely weird and gave the game a very surreal feel, and made it almost seem emptier than a game with no crowd noise.

I think they should hand out 100,000 remote control devices to the public with "hooray", "boo", "ball" and "are you f*&^ing kidding me?" buttons.

Exactly, too many players on the field. It's been obvious for a decade.

What about the cheers for a point? That was pretty funny too, of course the sound tech guy still a bit rusty just like the players ?

From memory that was the thing that I didn't like about the VFA back in the day.ย  It made it a faster game, but lacked a lot of the nuances of the main game (VFL).

Fitness isn't the issue it's the boring defensive stacks on football that's the problem.

If this is emblematic of footy in the 20s I reckon we get Ross Lyon on the phone. It's his time to shine.

Or Craig Bellamy

i find it interesting that Hawthorn is playing its first game in Geelong in something like 14 years. strange how we seem to play there every year and they don't.. i wonder how many other such anomalies apply where some clubs avoid Geelong, interstate trips, etc..

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecastโ€”20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze โ€” expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isnโ€™t a standard conceptโ€”itโ€™s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's ย six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his teamโ€™s unfulfilled potential rang true โ€ฆ well, almost.ย
