I should probably rewatch the game I suppose... my memory of it was that although he had something like 21 disposals, his efficiency wasn't particularly good, and he had been off his game for some time up to that point (last season's performances).  Maybe I'm being too harsh.

I think people are being too harsh on his round 1 game. Made a few mistakes but also did some very good things. Was a little better than his 2019 average. Really training standards should of more importance than performance in one match 2 months ago, and who knows how different players have managed with that.

Simply just awesome..

All 3 of our 2019 draft selections are playing.

Big tick for Jason Taylor.

you don't get ticks for playing them. playing well yeah, but not getting games.

So the Weid has been zeroed.

Disappointing and heading for the trade table is my guess. We don't have much success with drafting key forwards.

If Smith fails he might get a run down back given Petty's injury.

We seem to hear little of Baker.

Too many changes is my take. Perhaps they are all justified but it signals how poor some have been playing even when they're not playing!!

Why do you say that?  He could still play.

For what it's worth, I think we should have traded him last year while his value was at its highest.

I agree this is the likely changes. But Lockhart would be very very disappointed as he played a pretty good game.

Pretty surprising that we are playing the three debutants.

What the side might look like with those included;

FB: Jetta (Betts)  - May (McKay) - Hibberd (McGovern)

HB: Rivers - Lever - Salem

C : Langdon - Viney - A.Tom

HF: Trac - TMac - Melksham

FF: Kozzi - Jackson - Bennell

Agree Weid could play but I very much doubt it. Especially when you consider 16 minute quarters means less call for a relief ruck let alone two.

His injury in the second half of last year was unfortunate. Had he played in those inconsequential games we would have all known one way or the other if he could cut it.

Bugger those ins, I want to know if the most talked up, greatest player of all time, one J.Smith is getting a game.

I love vandenFyfe but he's cooked.

Very happy we have Bennell but would be shocked if he doesn't get injured.

Rivers is a big tick.

Jackson will be interesting, with Preuss injured I hope he plays that second ruck role.

Possibly the play with Jackson is they want Max to spend more time up frwd with TMac (to expose a short Carlton backline) and they felt more comfortable with Jackson (over Weid) doing more minutes in the middle.

Personally, I think Demonland should ban posters making a comment such as this one. Haven't we learnt nothing?

What does that mean?

Perhaps I missed the point. That Demonland ban such a phrase

In: Jones, Salem, Bennell, Jackson, Rivers, Weid

Out: Lockhart, Bedford, Spargo, Neal-Bullen, Brown, Hibberd

B: Jetta, May, Lever

HB: Salem, Omac, Rivers

? Langdon, Oliver, Tomlinson

HF: Melksham, Tmac, Jones

F: Pickett, Weid, Fritsch

R: Gawn, Viney, Petracca

I: Brayshaw, Harmes, Jackson, Bennell

Can't see us playing jackson as the only other tall forward along side tmac. Marc Mcgowan reported that at todays training neal-bullen, brown, bedford, spargo all playing in the 'B' team. Only other possible change is maybe joel smith plays for omac or if lever doesn't get up.

Gawn and Jackson rotating in the ruck will evolve into one of the hardest to combat ruck combos in the competition over the next 1-5 years, so Goodwin has jumped straight into it... with Maxy's fitness and shorter game time he could ruck all day, so if Jackson not up to it, no great loss. Curious to see how Jackson is played when not in the ruck, in the forward line or moved into midfield, as some have suggested he could...

Also, suspect Lever may be a late withdrawal...

If Lockhart does not play I am going to have a fit.

I can’t see how Lockhart could possibly be dropped after his game in Rd 1.  I think he keeps Salem out.

Vanders definitely not yet available as he didn’t play the last quarter on the weekend due to foot soreness at 3/4 time.

Zero chance Salem doesn’t get a game unless he’s not fit. He would be one of the first picked in the side.
I would suggest Hibbo is in some danger. He’s been ordinary for a long while, and Lockhart and River cover his position.

Goodwin seems to love a bolter selection for games after a long break.

Joel Smith round 1 2017

Corey Maynard round 1 2018

Tom Sparrow round 1 2019

Toby Bedford round 1 2020

and now Trent Rivers.

with hindsight none of these selection surprises have really worked so far, lets hope Trent breaks that run.

The whole team is off a long break 'kieranbj'...

He's doubly negative?

Think changes will be:

IN: Bennell, Rivers, Jackson, Salem, Jones
OUT: Hibberd, Spargo, Brown, Bedford, ANB/Lockhart

Think OMAC holds his spot to make sure May gets a match up on Mckay/McGovern and making sure Lever wont take a tall. I don't think Hibberd has shown enough over the past season plus rd 1 to warrant selection especially with Rivers in. Carlton's back 6 doesnt play tall 1 on 1 match ups so can see why Jackson gets a run here. Lockhart would be unlucky to miss, had a stinker rd 1 but has showed plenty recently and is a really good user of the footy.

Just remember our first game was so long ago that it is really like picking a team for the first game of the season . We would probably all be happy that we are seeing our draft picks play  early ...I’m looking at it like that anyway !

Quite right. I should have said "Have we learnt nothing?" or "Haven't we learned anything?". I now fear being banned for having improperly used a double negative.

Rapt to see Luke Jackson in for Dees. Tbh was absolutely stunned he missed Round 1 after watching him on track through summer ...

I am VERY excited with all our ins this week, but MFCSS dictates that I should be a little nervous about having 3 x first year players in there at the same time, along with another who has only played a couple of games in a few seasons.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
