Regrettable Trades

Featured Replies

I reckon they got this one wrong.ย

Jeremy Howe (2015)

Jeremy Howe has excelled at Collingwood, with the club switching him from a high-impact forward to a reliable part of their backline, capable of filling a wide variety of needs. With Melbourne hoping to get back into top eight contention in 2020, Howe would be a very welcome addition either up forward, where they lack goal kicking options, or down back.

Others: Stefan Martin, Jesse Hogan, Jack Watts

Who do you think is our most regrettable Trade out?

ย

Lol why does everyone think Collingwood invented him as a backline player, itโ€™s infuriating I recall his reason to go to the pies was to play as a forward, and jack watts shouldnโ€™t be on the list no regrets thereย

ย

Regret - we look back and wish we didn't do it.

Thats not how it works, you make the best decision that you can at the time. ย Howe - wanted to go, so this was a trade because we had to. ย In each case the numpties donโ€™t have all the facts. ย The clubs might have made some bad calls, but we cant know what would have been the outcome if the trade was not made. ย

I have zero regrets about the trades they mention. ย I may have more regrets that we were a club that no one wanted to come to for so long, that we were crap at developing players and we chose a string of coaches who were just not up to it.

Isn't it incredible, almost completely unbelievable, that Collingwood made the inspired decision to moveย Howe into defense... genius.

That is why Paul Roos is in inferior coach to Nathan Buckley.

Barassi left and broke my heart and it was the start of our decline from there on .

END OF STORY.ย  Itย  hurts.

Iโ€™m guessing that Geelong fans wouldnโ€™t be too thrilled about getting Jack Steven.

Stupid article really as most of these players were going. It should be the trades the club willingly made and regret.ย

In that case, Stef Martin. He got well and truly 'Mitch Clark-ed'

Yep...if only people knew the real story behind this. Hard to tell when one party plays the โ€˜mental health cardโ€™ and then leaves.ย

On a side note, Geelong deserve criticism for their handling of the recruitment of Clark.ย

Good call, won a Brownlow and then we traded him out only two years later. Plus staying true to form we then completely squandered those picks.ย

Rubbish 39 Roos had already moved Howe into defenceย

Howe was not keen really as he indicated and his manager Alex MacDonald that Buckley said he wouldย ย play him on the wing because of his engine!!!

Thats a furphy as we know and he had been a defender sinceย

But if he was at Melb Roos ย would no doubt have kept him in defenceย

That is what 39 is sarcastically inferring.ย

There's a lot of regret with some of our trades IN over the last decade.

I think most, if not all, of our trades OUT over the same period have been vindicated.

Trade outs that failedย

Luke Beveridge to Dogs for pick 122. ย He played for another 8-9 years. ย

Martin Pike to Lions (we got Seecamp who played some good years so trade was probably ok)ย

Stefan Martin to Lions (we had oversupply of Ruck)ย

Jeremy Howe to Pies (we got Ben Kennedy for a few games)ย

Troy Simmonds to Freo (we got Craig Ellis for a few games )ย

But this hurt the most :ย

Earl Spalding to the Blues - a sad day. Heย had five very good years from 87-91 and despite his kicking being a โ€œwork in progressโ€, his marking and agility and work ethic was fantastic. ย He could play CHF/CHB equally as good. The Duke was a fan favourite. ย ย The Duke was still a top performer when he left. ย He wasย going to go back home to WA to the Eaglesย then the Tigers made an offer before Carlton cameย with big $$$ and their 1st round pick 5 to trade. ย It was a big loss albeit Schwarz and Neitz were coming on board so could understand why we took the deal. ย He played six very goodย years at the Blues (92-97) including a premiership. ย
We got Jasonย Norrish with pick 5ย who played for 2 years and 20 games before joining Freo when they started. ย He played about 150 games and I think became vice captain. ย  A very handy fast wingman. ย We got Donald Cockatoo-Collins with the compensation pick (pick 10) which unfortunately didnโ€™t work out. ย

Yes... it was unbelievable.

S Alves and G Wells

Yep. Hated them both. Although I was partly pleased to see Alves play in premiership side. Wells was pushed out the door....traded without him even knowing.ย ย Real culture killing moments for two greats of the club.ย

Wells trade out was not an overnight thing. ย He tried to leave in 1980 for a few suitors if I recall. The Blues were the chosen path but the clubs couldnโ€™t agree on the players or the $$$. Rod Ashman and Alby Mangels didnโ€™t want to go to Melbourne. ย That reflects how poorly such players regarded us at the time. Eventually we got Vin Cataggio and Michael Young and got dudded. Still Wells (like Alves) had many many great years of service and finally got to experience finals and a premiership. ย Wells could have come back to us for a few years later when he was 30-31ย but I think his body was worn out by then.ย

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
