There must be a story on Max and Oliver. They are better than that. Viney - very good as was the defence ex Jetta and Harmes

But we seem to have too many, average one paced plodders that are again shown up against the better sides. Brayshaw ,Neal- Bullen, , Spargo? come to mind. Jury out on Tomlinson. Pretty slow through the middle like last year.

 

The Bermuda Triangle has become less of a mystery than our midfield - forward disconnect. 

Our bigs are clear bottom-4 in the air. Our smalls don’t apply anywhere near enough pressure. Disastrous mix, sadly.

Brayshaw and Oliver have played the past 12 months like trade bait.

We've learnt nothing and repeat the same mistakes year in year out.
Surprise, surprise.

Worst part is we can even watch decent re-runs to tide us over the football free winter.
Who knows ..... I might just find it a relief not being disappointed every week.

Don't blame for their lack of defensive transition, they were just practicing the proper social distancing (but they read the government directions as 15 metres not 1.5)

Teams keep getting us on the outside.

We now have wingers but they can’t kick.

We get our hands on the ball a lot but turn it over with blind handballs.

We hardly ever kick it to a leading forward and mostly bomb it in , giving the opposition the best chance to defend.

Until we fix this up We won’t improve.

Never seen a team work so hard to get the ball and then just waste it time and time again.

Last night was Oliver's worst effort ever but last season was solid.  He's set extremely high standards for a very young player.  

Amazing how people are happy to accept seasons (and last night didn't say any different) of mediocrity from Trac yet we all seem to forget Oliver is 22.

As for Brayshaw, I genuinely don't understand what has happened to him.

 

Another game where we gave ourselves no chance of winning from the outset with poor team selection and by playing underdone players. 

It took Goodwin just six months to take us from 4th to 17th, but he has clearly spent the past 12 months ensuring we will stay there for years to come. Our forward  structure, our two-way midfield running and defensive accountability are non-existent. Our effort is generally okay, but we undo this with skills and decision making of the highest ineptitude.

Viney was excellent and Pickett showed plenty of promise. May and O.McDonald beat their direct opponents convincingly, but West Coast played around them for the most part. The rest were utter tripe.

Worst on ground by a mile was Spargo. I knew we would be bad when I saw he was in the team, but that was next level stuff. 3 effective disposals, 0 scores, 0 tackles and 3 mind boggling turnovers kicking sideways or backwards into the middle of the ground. There is not a single aspect of his game that is AFL standard.

Gawn was beaten by Hickey and flogged mercilessly by Naitanui in all significant respects - he is clearly not fit. Oliver was lazy and disinterested. Ditto Brayshaw. Petracca continues to tease and deliver little. Tomlinson was unsighted. Langdon worked his backside off and undid it all with terrible disposal. And Harmes, our best defensive midfielder, ran around the half back line like a headless chook.

T.McDonald continued his descent towards being a VFL player. Melksham continues to strut around and avoid the contest. Bedford is miles off this level and Brown, who I have time for, made a bucket load of school boy errors. Jetta is two years past being an AFL player and should retire. Ditto Hibberd. Lever continues to save his best work for directing traffic whilst ignoring his opponent and making elementary skill errors.

All in all the type of performance that makes me wonder exactly what we have been doing for six months and makes me glad that I don't have to see them play again for another 2 months.

Saved by the virus from another putrid season.

Almost unwatchable from   a contest point of view. You just knew they were going to turn the ball over, you just knew they were going to bomb it long to a uneven contest. And they kept doing it over and over.

Nothing has changed.

i concur.

First 15 minutes we where in the game. Had plenty of the ball/ I50 but couldn't put any score on the board. Turnovers, skill errors, bad luck etc. The score was 1.1 - 0.4. WCE then went inside 50 4 times for 4 goals. Siren went and we where 5 goals down at Q time against the Eagles in Perth and it was game over.

and how good was Omac, kept Darling to one shot at goal and no influence on the game at all!

Melbourne captain Max Gawn believes it cannot be underestimated how tough it was on his team to travel interstate for the opening game of the season.

Just hours before the opening bounce of the club’s clash with the Eagles on Sunday, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan confirmed the competition would break for a 10-week period.

With a number of players nervous about the trip to Perth, Gawn believed the decision played on the mind of his teammates over the last 48 hours.

“Don’t underestimate the risk that the travel had on a lot of players,” Gawn said.

“Everyone put their hands up and wanted to play. That’s young, millennial footballers.

“But this is a really risky thing that we’ve decided to come out and do and the stress that would have caused family with young kids at home.”

Gawn said despite the AFL going on hold, his mindset was still firmly set on helping the Demons achieve success this year.

“This initial bit will be around family, but me personally, I’m still in football 2020 mode,” Gawn said.

“I don’t know when that’s going to be. When football is going to be, but me personally I’m training for the next game.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed outdoors, if I’m on the treadmill inside, but that’s where my head is at the moment.”

Realistic view, . The above must have had a mental impact on the team.

But the game last night confirmed/ showed for me several players still in 22 are most likely past it for sure and will open up spots for others  if the season re-starts or next year.

Forward entries still not fixed - Ball firmly in Goodwin's court 

Gone are Hibbered, Spargo, ANB.   Still quality to come in like AVB, Hore, Salem, Weideman, Jackson.....

The OMac haters are really standing out today. He did a very good job on Darling, and for the most part looked more confident and proactive.

But according to some, he should never play another game and was as good as useless.

It's been quarantined...

I have mixed thoughts about the game.

I'm not going to call them excuses but

• First Game of the Season
• Against Quality Opposition
• In the heat
• New players for the club
• Perhaps the uncertainty of the season did get to them at times.

But at the end of the day as we've said here there were simple mistakes that cost us goals and the same issues what impacted us in 2019. Must improve the delivery into the F50. It was one of those games where the start killed us, They couldn't seem to miss, we couldn't seem to score. 

Just sad we need to wait a minimum of 10 weeks for more Kozzie Picket
