Right then people. Let's all get self isolating like there's no tomorrow. The sooner we get this thing licked the sooner we get our Dees back. I was going to say let's mobilise but you know what I mean.

First sensible post on this topic, so far.

Agree Daisy.

As Eddie commented, clubs are going to have rebuild from the ground up.

Club survival will be the force that drives change and that change will have to disregard previous arrangements, contracts and preferences regarding players, coaching and support staff. I suspect that someone like Burgess will probably go. I tend to agree (reluctantly) with the velvet sledgehammer that it provides an opportunity to slash support staff. Like many others, the number of support staff seems to have grown exponentially over the last few years. Just look at the numbers in the coaching box and on the ground at quarter time breaks.

Lets hope that it provides an opportunity for media outlets to cut footy media scribes and hangers on who make a living talking and writing crap. Far too many second raters making their living their AFL connection.  Hopefully, some positives will come from the changes imposed on the industry.

At a personal level, it seems heartless as it means that many will lose their jobs and income but that is the case across society. On a macro level, it just seems that there has been a blow-out in folk making a living from AFL and that it is time that the sails are trimmed.

Keep safe mate.

quite agree ernie. i've thought for a long time that the afl and clubs have got way too bloated and somehow the footy basics have been sacrificed so a good overhaul and rethink of the basics is probably a good idea if not painful

I agree dc.  Was just indicating all options will be looked at so folks don't assume that shutting down gws and gcs will solve the financial problems ahead.  Just can't see an 18 team comp.

I wonder why???

Surely it would be better at least for people to go outside if no one else is in their space.

Maybe the density of population in some areas is the problem.

I am still playing golf at a moderately remote course every day at first light. The magpies and corellas are still helping me find my golf ball in the half-light when things go astray into the rough. Bless them. I only play 9 holes, per day, but cover a pedometer-measured 9 000 metres in that process (my average score is 42 off the stick for the nine holes). I have the course to myself - me and the birds - and it proves to be a wonderful form of exercise and mental concentration. I intend to keep this up every day as I am convinced that the health benefits will aid in delaying the possible contraction of this horrible virus. I'd recommend this type of exercise to anyone; it is totally invigorating given the sudden and depressing descent of the C-19 virus on all of humanity. In this regime, I consider the MFC deeply, constantly and will strive to be at the first resumption of play in person. Like all good Demons' fans, soldier on!

The clubs that are financially propped up (the most) by the AFL will surely be in the gun once the smoke clears.

GWS Giants and G.C Suns are not self funding and never have been. Yeah yeah, every club takes money from the AFL but those two clubs take a much greater percentage than others, and could anyone see a date in the future when they wont need to be spoon fed by the League? I can't.

On another note, let's see how serious the players are about the viability of the comp as opposed to their short term financial interests. Watch for the older players to make the most noise about getting the most they can at the expense of the clubs (Dangerfield, I'm looking at you), while the younger players with years ahead of them lean towards a longer term approach that supports a strengthening of the clubs. Would love to see the back room dealing and player vote when it comes to a re-negotiation of their contracts.

Interesting times ahead.

I think we can all say goodbye to the annual Shanghai Sling for the foreseeable future.

Watch for the AFL to dust off the Darwin deal and send us back there next year. It will be all stops out for the AFL, and with the poorer clubs cap-in-hand, we won't have a leg to stand on.

I think the MFC will survive.
the strategy it puts forward to do this will be crucial and fascinating to watch.

I'm confused.

How does ditching a steady income source save us?

My old man used to say, Don't worry about hitting your ball into the sh.t, you find a lot of golf balls there.

Can any one of you 3 explain how those comments match with this one from @Sir Why You Little  "Getting rid of those Poker Machines might just save us above other clubs"

The pokie venues are closed - yep

And that is going to "save" us?

Makes no sense.

An overhead we no longer have to worry about.
it’s cut back time

Running Pokies into next year could be very costly without Punters throwing Hard Earned away

I doubt it will ever be the same unless some wealthy white knight club people prop the poorer clubs up. The 2 expansion teams could be in strife,  Brisbane was already on life support. I'm not sure of Sydney's situation but I'm tipping they will struggle ( as will most. )

I wonder if going back to the roots of the original VFL will be considered? I for one would not mind at all.

Whatever happens,  it will vastly different to what we've become accustomed to.

Are you serious, I can never understand what he is getting at.

No, I can see where he is coming from, perhaps rent and associated costs on the venues, rent on the machines themselves and no revenue as long as the venues are closed. Then meals and drink sales will be gone as well.

I find it interesting that AFL only suspended after the government announced varying supports to businesses etc. wether this is an illusionary amount or an amount with so many strings attached that it is virtually unavailable who knows.

Perhaps it depends on the colour in the application document.

i await with interest but reckon things will rebound quickly when we get over the bridge.

Don't we own the venue? Unless we sell the venue after the pokies are gone the costs still mostly exist.

I also thought we owned the pokie licences and simply paid the taxes on them. Wasnt aware we also rented the machines.

Will be very interesting to compare us against (is it Hawthorn who are keeping theirs?) I still think it's a [censored] decision to throw away your main money maker and always have. Footy is a business, and we are about to see just how quickly the game falls apart without cash.

Yeah now I get it.

I thought we owned the machines, not rented them.

Makes sense now.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
