People don't realise how deeply troubling a day in Australian history this is. The end of the most key source of syndicated press content  because the next generation would rather read opinions from social media influencers than from proper researched and intelligent journalists. AAP was funded by both Rupert and Nine amongst others so was the most unbiased journalism we had. These are the people who keep the b@stards honest. Who's going to do that now. It's a terrible day.

Welcome to the future

Biassed opinion over facts any day!

Blame the government!

Extract payment for perceived problem.

AFL media reporter assigned to cover the Demons (and several other clubs).

Certainly the club should be doing it. The logos on the gear is one thing but I reckon a quick Zurich or Jaguar logo flashing up before or watermarked on the footage probably wouldn't hurt.

But my main point was more around the lack of journos being able to cover sports in Australia now with AAP announcing they'll close up today. Mens AFL will always have decent coverage but smaller sports - including AFLW - are going to need to find more revenue for the journos to turn up and cover them. At a minimum McGowan should slip the AFL Media logo on his vision, but if clubs allow it might even have to get his tweets sponsored.

The quickest way to lose any kind of organic engagement is to make it too 'corporate' or start adding sponsors and adds to it. Not to mention if you're heading back to the office to add watermarks and get videos edited you lose the instant nature of using social media, which is the whole point of using it in the first place.

Thanks Andy, good photos.  Good to see the boys enjoying themselves.

He's going to be a weapon this year VDB, looking forward to the carnage.

'Carnage' is the effect and worthy of praise for the effort, but not the correct mindset. I'd rather say that AVB's commitment to the footy for the sake of the team is first rate, reliable and executed with aplomb! We don't want him to become a marque of green snot goblin attrition or disfavour - although his first responsibility to the Club is to put opponents down on the ground whilst winning possession cleanly - and every time. I am looking forward, instead, to the opponent(s) '...nullification...' with all the plurality that he can muster.

Doesn't the still photo of Hannan's kicking action look poised, balanced, meticulous? Very impressive - and I hear he has started to be training freely and very well....

Great photos.  Well done.  I know every team says it, but our boys do look very fit.

I might me imagining it, but the muscle definition of the players seems much more obvious this year compared with previous. Not for everyone, such as the younger players, but generally speaking the playing group seems to be more muscular than before. I know this doesn't necessarily equate to fitness but it's nevertheless impressive.

I remember a few years ago (probably the Bailey era) comparing our squad with some other teams and we looked positively puny. Not any more.

don't know how Harley manages to look so ripped when he hasn't been able to do much serious running. he hasn't got an ounce of fat on him. freak specimen.

Compare it to Harley Bs with HBs angled ball drop yet both get the desired results.

Here come the Morton and Gysbert’s pics.

Awesome pics! How good does that jumper look let alone how fit the players look in them.

Harley B... good god I hope he can get back to playing footy, such a good story let alone what he’d bring to us.

The training jumper is a ripper. If we were ever forced to get a new jumper this is the only one I'd accept as a replacement. Having said that they'd have to pry the current one from my cold dead hands.

Yep, fantastic photos!  Of course, you often just see what you want to see in these things, but it looks to me like the boys are relishing the hard work and camaraderie, ...................... but the absolute stand-out shots for me are a  couple towards the middle,  which highlight what seems to be a great rapport between Max and Harley.  What a great captain and mentor Max will be for Harley.

Agree

perhaps this jumper could be an alternative to our clash strip against  some teams but the blue is the problem I think  anyway

In the Twitter video on the harley thread of him joining in a kicking drill after kicking a beatiful drop punt he runs to the drills starting point where maxy makes a point of going to him and giving a high five.

Love it.

Went to a lunch today and a couple of players were there, Max and Tommy.  When asked who they thought would be big improvers this year, Tommy said Bedford and Spargo and Max said Corey Wagner and in fact both the Wagners. Corey was told to put on 5 Kilos and when he got back and had, they said they wanted him in a different role and he had to shed the weight.

They enquired how the change in captaincy was perceived by the supporters and were told it was mainly positive, in fact mostly positive.

The boys are loving the new training regime, not as much long distance running and more time with the ball. They are used to doing an 8k run and then start training, now they are using the ball a lot more and love it.

All players are given a job and they just have to do that, not just stand in a spot, but a specific job and if every player does his job they should perform well as a team.

The club is quietly confident about the coming season.

I spoke to Richo and told him the supporters are proud of the club for taking the chance with Harley and he was quite surprised at the level of enthusiasm his signing generated, quite happy about it though.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
