  • Demonland changed the title to New Training Ground Option?

The druggies have supposed fantastic facilities out at Tullamarine with 2 MCG & Docklands Ovals. Look how good that has turned out for them.

I wonder if having "all mod cons" can molly coddle teams a bit. All under cover, out of the cold and wet ... beautiful ... and then they show up on game day to a wet windswept ground ...

I have no evidence for this, but "train as you play" comes to mind. We've seen a few sides in recent seasons that seem helpless in the wet.

"Not sure if he is a relative of Rod" do you mean me? No not a relative but have met him at Council functions such as Australia Day, and at the Half Moon. I meant a relative of Rod Grinter.

"There is also an Impartiality code which would seem that you are walking close to." - I'm not on Council and anyway someone who is accused by A Current Affair of dodgy dealings (allegedly) isnt suddenly a criminal. The code you refer to is that in relation to the Local Government Act. I think you are playing bush lawyer here. No I create online training systems and have a close relationship with government codes of conduct.(only because I try to make them interesting to an audience). The code does make an important  point that it should be in all dealings; personal, business and those of Council .

"our ward is conjoined with East Brighton. Why? Its miles away." council boundaries aren't decided by council - and anyway how is that evidence of Council being dodgy? Dodgy is not exactly right, but councillors should represent their local ward. We have works starting, building an oval on our park to create a fenced oval for the Vampires. It isnt hard to understand why locals who like off leash are incensed with representatives who live a long way away, creating facilities for their local voters and influencers.

"They stay on council for about as long as the Castros in Cuba. you mean Alex Del Porto - I agree but there should be term limits a State Government matter. Alex and Pellicano went to school with me. Pellicano was an exceptional runner. Alex... well he looked good.

Fundamentally you have assembled your gripes about ward boundaries, long term Councillors and dog off leash parks access to conclude the Council is dodgy. If you still doubt my credentials - ask me about the current Councillors at least 3 of which I served on Council with or know though other Bayside business I do. I am in what was once called Clayton Ward and have played football for the Hampton Rovers - hence my handle. I dont doubt you and take onboard that you may have made a positive difference. I was harsh and you deserve respect. I also respect that you played with the Rovers and must have been handy. But I do hold gripes when you assert all is above board when we lost our park and counselors revolve.

I think the oval could be a good facility but it would need a lot of work to the surface and the facilities. Another reason for it might be to do with the strong demon supporter base in Bayside. This I conclude from the fans on the Sandy line for game day. I expect you could see them from your view in the back seat of the Mayoral Roller. I hope you rattled your chains at Scully! cheers, but thats it from me.

Eddie wants us out of his backyard and to move to Port Melbourne.

If Eddie likes it so much, he should take Collingwood to Port Melbourne. Port Melbourne also have something in common with Collingwood. Verticle stripes.

Pies have invaded our territory and should go back to VFL Park. Pies can then do up VFL Park to AFL standard and they get their own ground to play and train on.

If we ever got approval for Jolimont, Eddie would vomit.

The train station areas are no goes unless they are part of a huge redevelopment of Richmond station. We’d be getting tacked on to a project that would run in the 100’s of million dollars. More likely that’s a project that occurs with the southern stand redevelopment.

The freeway off ramp area is a dud too. Far too much traffic.

Car park E makes little sense to me when we’d be staring out on Collingwood’s oval.

So the only viable option is back to Car Park F. As per my drawing earlier in the thread.

I'd love us to finally crack the code on this issue. While in an ideal world the Melbourne Football Club would have its training base in Melbourne proper, I wonder if any training facility in the established Melbourne sporting precinct will give us scope to cater for the growing requirements of elite footy? I fear we will quickly outgrow any new facility in central Melbourne and find ourselves in the position of playing catch-up again.

Soon enough all clubs will want huge training bases with a minimum of two training grounds, large indoor practice areas and the ability to hold closed sessions. Can inner-city Melbourne accommodate these demands? Hawthorn's new facilities at Dingley will soon be the envy of other Victorian clubs. West Coast opened its $60m home in Lathlain last year. It consists of two training grounds, one the size of Optus Stadium, the other the size of the MCG. It also has a 60 metre indoor training hall, gyms and a lap pool. This will become the standard for other clubs to chase. Moving beyond the 3000 postcode might give us more ability to establish such facilities.

Elsternwick Park is an interesting proposition, particularly as the public golf course next door to the established VAFA ground has been closed and is being turned into community open space. Would there be more ability to establish the facilities we need in a location such as this, given it could also be used for community purposes? It is only 10km from the CBD and easily accessible by public transport.

Mulgrave and Dingley have been good enough for Hawthorn. Tullamarine has been good enough for Essendon. Neither is particularly close to the city.

The idea that our base has to be within spitting distance of the MCG is so short sighted and why we are doomed to be talking about this issue for another 10 years.

The City of Kingston has been falling over itself to throw money at St Kilda and Hawthorn in recent years. Not jumping into Moorabbin when St Kilda vacated was a massive error, but there are other possible options in our bayside / south east heartland areas.

The board is being negligent if it fails to consider all options and is being pig headed if it wedges the club into a half baked, B grade solution close to the MCG.

Yes, right you are Daisy. I had both grounds in my mind and I backed the wrong pony.

The more astute on this site might be able to help me out here but isn't there an MCG sized oval at Fawkner Park. From memory I think it's called Cordner Oval. Easy walk to Sth Yarra Station and straight down Anderson St to the G. Has it ever been mentioned?

I'm not normally a person who quotes themselves but I have had no reply to my question so; bump!

The need for exclusivity is what kills off many of the inner community ovals. Even if not perpetually exclusive the fencing etc required to provide for occasional closed sessions would be an anathema to the local populace

I take it from this that Eddie has plans for Gosch's and wants us off it.

This is where The MFC must stand up

We decide where we go

We are Melbourne. The name of the City, that soon will be the Biggest City in the Country.
We must represent that city like the Yankees do in New York. That will take time. But we have to start it NOW and not back down.

It may have already been mentioned on these threads but instead of building over the Jolimont railyards they could place the tracks underground and we could have a new training facility and office where the old East Melbourne cricket ground used to be.

Sadly, I agree with Eddie.  As I said on the previous page, the Port Melbourne homeground is currently nestled in the middle of the Fisherman's Bend development.  Plenty of space, current football presence, few residents to offend or object and soon to be home to many thousands of people.

We still desperately need the inner Melbourne meeting point for final training hitouts, social gatherings media announcements, and pre & after games.

Gosch's is the way forward and then down the track look to a new complex for midweek works, further along the track, as AFLW grows, and we see what is required.

What a waste of time that was, going to edies view.

Port Melbourne could be underwater in 15 - 20 years time, just as it has been during the past 200 years, as a swamp.

Yes to a massive training base in Dingley, something like 20ha they have there future    well and truly set up. It’s costing them a fortune but it will be worth it.

Costing the pokies addicts a fortune to set up the "family club" for the future.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
