Cornes is not happy with all the talk coming out of the Dees camp and wants a less is more approach.

I understand that clubs during the pre-season are trying to sell optimism in a competitive and saturated market. But you’ve got to read the room.

If I’m in the media managers chair at the Demons this is how I’m instructing my players to answer the typical pre-season question from a journo.

Journo: “(Insert player's name) How have you found the pre-season?”
Player: “Look, I’ve enjoyed it. Obviously we were highly embarrassed and disappointed by what we served up as a club last year and we are working to make sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes.”

Then shoosh. Shut up. There it’s done, that’s all a Melbourne fan wants to hear.

Not that it’s been an unbelievable pre-season, not that we re releasing a pre-season documentary called To Hell and Back, not that the young players are training the house down, not that the new coaches and fitness staff are gods.

Just be quiet until March and then let your football do the talking.

Its crystal clear who the AFL pre-season premiers are. Congratulations to the Melbourne Football Club. I just really hope for their sake they win some games this year, otherwise its going to be highly embarrassing.

I don't often agree with Cornes in fact we have a saying in my household; "Always bet on the guy that Kane Cornes picks against".

In this case he is spot on. Particularly when he is talking about this stupid Pre Season Doco. Whoever signed off on this should be sacked. I couldn't give a rats how good the quality of the video is with the slow mo and the close ups and the inspirational music. The fact is we haven't COME BACK FROM ANYWHERE.

TO HELL AND BACK. Where is the back in this narrative?

If we win the [censored] lot this year then by all means make you doco with slow mo and inspirational music but until then do all your talking on the footy field.

Yeah sell some hope but sell it on the [censored] footy field.

I disagree completely. In a perfect world we would have the luxury of not needing to overhype but in reality we have to do anything we can to sell as many memberships as possible. If we have another terrible season, won't have mattered whether we were quiet or loud now. Have to do everything we can to retain as much of the membership base as possible or we'll just lose more ground.

Those who have decided not to renew their membership this year are not going to renew it because of some club sponsored propaganda.

RICHMOND has embraced a vision for a golden decade with an ambitious plan to more than double membership, clear debt and play finals three times, all within five years.

The Tigers are determined to rouse the sleeping giant of football and their dormant fans through their plan, which carries a motto of 3-0-75. The motto stands for playing finals three times, having zero debt and signing 75,000 members within the next five years.

The five-year plan is about positioning the club for where it will be by the end of the decade, with a vision for 2020 that they return not just to being one of the top four Victorian clubs, but the top Victorian club.

Significant in the short term is the intention to play finals three times by 2014, which would require the Tigers to make the eight no later than 2012 - and stay there.

Our players were well and truly humbled last year. A strong team with belief that they will be successful should come out and say it, rather than be fearful of failure.

You can't get ahead of yourself but the idea that our players should be dwelling on last year like we need to pay some penance for it is ridiculous.

After the early years of his career Cornes didn't win a thing.

I do agree somewhat to what Kane Cornes is saying but we are backing ourselves in to deliver. We are not acting like the 17th placed team hiding away. We are putting it out there. Is that right or wrong? All depends on the win/loss. I will be positive and back us to deliver.

Are our membership numbers now a secret? Three weeks ago I rang the club to ask why they were not on the website. I was told sorry an omission they will be up shortly. Have not checked today but it appears still to  be a secret. Perhaps my idea of " shortly" and the MFC's are different.

In the past I would have agreed with Cornes but you know what.

It's time we came out and had a red hot go and put it all on the table.

We really don't risk being a laughing stock as many already think we are.

I agree with you 'Dee'...make a statement and back it up.

I reckon we're good enough...

They are on the website but in an obscure spot.  Actually joining the club is a bit hidden too (why?!) - under the hamburger at the top right.  Then you have to pretend you want to join and up comes the membership number which I presume is vaguely up to date.

Talk is all we have been good at over the last decade.

Would be nice to back it up for once.

It used be on the opening screen. Obviously it is not that important any longer.

I don't mind the threads that start with a link to a dees media story as a rule.

But I reckon we should ban using anything Cornes says as a topic starter..

I don't mind string opinions but his MO is so transparently click bait rubbish that we do footy journalism a disservice even reading him.

Thanks for the advice Mr Cornes.  I know it’s all puff, but to hear the messages that:

  • it has been tough, but the novelty has been great (ball in hand)
  • draftees all fitting in and working hard
  • smiles, good culture, strong team first
  • twice the number of players involved in full preseason.

make me a happy, and a bit optimistic, as a demon.

what does he want?  Moaner and groaner.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
