While I respect Goody's No D.......s policy I believe the push for trials for  Harley  and Murray potentially are exactly the self checking and discipline  defining acts that might also assist our Club to grow from slight immaturity to much stronger organisation.

This stance in effect could be the one if the reasons our football and attitudes have to stand up big time for us to become a real team to challenge in the toughest of environments AFL.

it could go one way or the other but we will never know without giving it a go.!

And the upside is that we need the skills both  these talented players possess for our team to progress and prosper.

Strap in for an exciting ride.

The club will become a stronger organisation from winning more games & having the right people within the organisation to facilitate this.....simple!

if Melbourne only win 5 games for the year in 2020, do you really think that the football public will acknowledge & recognise their discipline & maturity?

I doubt it.

Great to have the skills but we need the players on the park & need a game plan to utilize these skills.

Yeah agree & hence my 'boys club' tag.....lets face it too, the coach has history too so these guys will fit in beautifully.

Roosey must be shaking his head in disbelief.

Anyway, good luck to these guys & hope they prove everyone, including me, wrong!

You just have to have faith that the admin and leaders don't allow those dead hooker moments to happen. Or if it does they smash it down ASAP.

It's a balancing act. If we bring a kid to the club that has the ball on a string, but is an out and out moron, what do you do? Cut him loose and watch him win flags for other teams or back yourself to get the best from him without it screwing the rest of the team? And look I don't really know but I'd go with the later. Good teams can do that. Bad teams can't. I'd like to think that despite last year, we are actually a good team.

Heard a very interesting story about her. She'd taken quite a liken to Patty Cripps when he first started at the blues...

Can you blame her?

You have to take the low risk high reward with him for sure. Hasn't played consistent football for a long time.

But gee we haven't have a player with such balance, poise and skill for a longtime. I don't imagine we will get 2015 Harley but even two thirds of that player would be so useful to this team

He and Marlion Pickets games are so similar. Both have that confidence when running with the long strides and balance with ball in hand, they don't go to ground. Interesting they both same/similar age.

They might have these similar traits, but that's where the comparisons should stop.  Bennell is a far better player than Pickett, he just needs to stay on the park to prove it.

When I look at Harley Bennell I see someone who has matured from a highly talented footballer who has no idea what is required to have a su cessful career, to someone given a second chance and despite working hard is frustrated by injury and falls onto bad habits, to where he is now, having a supportive partner, a baby and a third opportunity with Melbourne.  I reckon he's earned his chance to train with us and would live to see him on our list.

Talent always beats the DH policy. In any club. If you are a Buddy type you can get caught with a dead hooker in the boot of the car and the club will try to cover it up, but if you are # 36 on a list and smoke a joint then out you go.

If Murray joins us and sneezes the wrong way he will be booted. If Bennell joins us and shows he can play then he will be allowed to sneeze many times before we boot him. If Gawn or Clarry were found with dead hookers we'd hire lawyers for them.

The way it is, always has been, and always will be, right or wrong.

Do we have a line into Ray Donovan. Just in cases, of course.

Yeah just saying they had similar style of football. Didn't mention who I thought was better. Clearly Bennell when fit you're right.

I would do Cripps and then brag about it to my wife.

Does that make me bad?

A bad look? Seriously?? If a couple of guys having fun and a bit of a laugh is a bad look, what has the world come to?

I had no idea what they were copying but still made me laugh.

Some people are over sensitive and look for the bad in everything. That’s the way of the world it seems.

absolutely nothing wrong, just a bit of fun mucking around.

....but....what I don't understand is this urge to advertise it to the universe. once on the web it is there for all eternity. it just attracts all the trolls who'll give you a hard time.....

Hard to put any sense to this really......

Amazing to think that recruiting players with good character was a priority a few years ago & now that pre-requisite has been all but been thrown out the door......Sam Murray as well, give me a break. Need for speed....they got that right.

So when the recruiting officers sit down at the dining tables with potential draftees & the discussion comes up about character, responsibilities as an AFL footballer in society & the no [censored] policy.....how do the parents & player respond?

Becoming a real 'boys club' Melbourne & this will no doubt end in tears.....again.

A history of drug use doesn't necessarily make you a [censored]

Has Doc Bruckner started yet? Reckon he'd have a valuable opinion on Harley' s legs. Would the club be consulting the surgeon who operated on him?

Both. As many expert opinions as one can get.

Yes,, but what about the r'ship in particular b/w Bennell and Martin? Are they best mates?. KK and MAY were there also. Does Martin not have any other mates in the game?

Bennell was one of Martin’s best mates at the Suns according to this piece from last year.

They did seem to look for each other pretty frequently in the GC forward line.

Totally agree LG with you about winning and ability but the average AFL fan ( and many Demon  fans) are yet to be  convinced  about our culture (and ability to handle expectation) plus the tough/ difficult issues and the chance being taken by our Club will in my opinion change for the better the  landscape due to the "potential bad boy " existence putting us on notice internally and externally.

My hope and expectation is that this will bring the maturity necessary at this stage  of our development and blend with our undoubted talent to transform into wins.

As you indicated LG that is ultimately the judge of an AFL team and many factors make this mix towards successful outcomes.

No, your comment just belies a certain ignorance. Not everybody who takes drugs is an out-of-control sports-idiot. I’ve known many wonderful and inspiring people who aren’t afraid or ashamed to pepper their brief time on earth, with pleasurable, illuminating and enlightening moments spent in altered states. As a professional musician, I can assure you that if it weren’t for drugs your favourite band would sound very different or most likely not exist at all. I shudder to think who they might be though.

I'm pretty certain this however was thought about, debated and designed of cups over coffee and tea cake

spiked with copious amounts of lsd.

Anyways......

I’ve read a few posters that tend to think Bennell will have a long road back to fitness and may not even get on the park until mid season next year if at all..Mahoney said as much in an interview that he’s starting from a very low base which is a fair comment.

However, it doesn’t take many kms for Noongar boys to get back to fitness so I think Harley will be ready much earlier if his calves are sorted.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
