Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Sooooo.....  someone else can still take him then, as with Hannath?

Assuming as a delisted player he can pick his destination. Hannath was never on a list and went to the rookie (?) draft.

Bennell doesn’t need to go into any draft I assume we can pick him up in March as we did with Lockhart and I assume the order of picks is as per the draft so we have pick 2. Thus only GC can trump us, thus if we want him, he’s ours.

Please correct if I’m wrong.

Seeing as he has decided to train with us we get 1st crack at picking him, no one else can take him unless we say we don’t want him, so technically he is a Melbourne player just waiting to see if we give him a contract or not

Just for those such as myself who aren't completely across all the various recruitment methods/rules, does this development mean that subject to him getting through everything successfully, he is 100% ours now?

Or is there still a chance the likes of Geelong could still pinch him?

My understanding/best guess is that Harley is on an all-in "paid" training arrangement, which means he can only be selected by the club he is training with.  We are paying him on the proviso that, provided he does not have a further 'major' break down (say surgery is required vs a lessor evil such as a bit longer in recovery/rehab off the track), then we will confirm him as an SSP rookie.

The SSP commences 1 Dec and finishes 15 March so we would need to confirm him on the rookie list prior to the 15th.  All going well I assume we will nominate him well before the 15th and more than likely before the year is out as per 36's mail.

It would not surprise me if both parties have already settled on some key dates including an 'all's well - tick the final box' nomination date.

He is ours or nobody's from here is my best guess and only nobody's due to another major (Lucifer forbid) setback.  Fingers, toes and tail crossed!

I doubt the club would risk him on an unpaid training trial as it would leave us open to him going elsewhere but it would also not be the greatest option for Bennell either as he would then need to nominate himself in the pre-season draft where he could be picked up by anyone.  Even someone other than who he has trained with second up.  Once he trains (unpaid) with more than one club he must nominate for the draft and can't be rookied.  And if everyone knows we've rejected him they would be thinking twice in a big way, lessening his chances to land anywhere or with a club of preference in a best case scenario under that option.  Highly unlikely and something he would have been advised to avoid by his manager imv and something we would unlikely agree to.

Would be very surprised if this is anything but an all or nothing 'paid' gambit by both parties.  Both parties have in effect gone 'all-in'.

You are wrong, in that he is now ours. The arrangement re training allows him to be taken as a supplemental player and placed onto our rookie list.

That way the pressure of fans and media is avoided and he can be uplifted, if he is to be selected in the senior side. If not he merely stays on the rookie list.

The fact that it is announced, means he has selected us but can't train with us for a couple of weeks, until the relevant period starts.

That seems really silly, I mean if club and player have agreed on a course of action then why not cut to the chase?

That said I’m sure he will meet with our medicos who will monitor the program I’m sure he’s been given.

For me I think the club has handled this really well, it’s a mixture of risk and prudence. We’ve taken a punt on him, given him another chance but we’ve done our due diligence and haven’t rushed into anything.

Welcome to wearing Red and Blue Harley!

Not at all.  Quid pro quo.

Bennell gets to train at a club he would like to end up with (for at least $1k per week) and we get to try before we buy.

Personally i would think both parties have already settled on an in-principal signing and contract terms post a 'lead up trial period/assessment' over a few weeks ie; from 1st Dec through till whenever that is, for want of an official date lets say it's end of Dec per Leoncelli36's mail.

It worries me that we're speaking with both Bennell and now Sam Murray and could potentially have both on our list soon. As much talent as they both have, culture is more important IMO. Only takes a few bad seeds to infect the club.

I'm of the opposite view.

The club has been a laughing stock for over 50 years, nearly merging, dishing up years like 2019 & all through it we have chased choir boys with no fight in them or no fight.

We can't get any lower than we are & I couldn't care if we recruited murderers,I want results & nothing else

Irrespective of all the above provisos, well done to both parties and I'm glad the Dee's have taken the punt on him. If it doesn't work out then so be it but at least it shows that Melbourne have lost that conservatism that's been stopping us from picking up players that may have a bit of a reputation.

Welcome Harley and let's hope that we have some good years ahead, for both our sakes.

I see what your saying, and am not disagreeing at all.  Our predicament (building a slow list) has forced us to look where others fear to tread; and we have no choice but to gamble.

What I would add is that there are many 'finger-pointers' with good reputations that I think don't necessarily add to culture either.  Lewis, and Melksham were serial offenders.  Clarry's go at Fritsch may have been isolated, but he learnt from the best.

Roos' no-DH policy might have won him a flag at Sydney, but it might of cost Melbourne Toby Green for a "packet of chips".

Culture just isn't about getting guys in that are good solid citizens.  Did Lewis really buy into the red and blue?  I doubt it.  It was Hawthorn, Roughy, Buddy, daylight, then Melbourne.  With Melky, it is Melky, Melky, Melky, daylight, then Melbourne.

With Frost, I saw a guy bleed for the jumper.

Just reading it from afar; but that is my perception.

Ah yes, senior players with experience to teach, pointing directions = lack of culture. But Frost having nothing to teach, and therefore nowhere to point = bleeding for the jumper.

You know., I don't post much but I have been reading the boards for many years. I always thought you were a bit odd, but I'm tolerant so I let personal opinions slide. However; when you slate Lewis like that, and I saw no reason to think he wasn't committed to the cause, it goes beyond tolerance and you need to be called out. I rate Lewis and his contribution to the club. I do not rate self indulgent internet dweebs with agendas  and bad attitutudes. (Some may say simpeltons).

If we applied the Roos policy on here I'm sure you would be one of the first to go.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
