The time line of the prospect of Harley joining us ran pretty much parallel with the prospect of drafting Jack Martin. We didn't appear to make much of an effort to convince Martin that we had the draft pick and heย wold play with us or no one.A bit like North and Carlton over Keith Greig .Instead the club dismissed the drafting of Martin rolled out Harley as a substitute and people got excited .Now the overwhelming consensus seems to be that it was unlikely that Harley would ever play anyway .That consensus is well justified and I concur with it .But we cannot say that all we lost was a potential rookie list player .What we lost was an absolutely fortuitous opportunity to snag not some rookie listed player but a genuinely good fit footballer .Harley was just the soft option .ย

Itโ€™s only a minor calfย injury according to Foxsports today.

I love revisionists who try and change history.

Martin did a deal with Carlton and then refused to talk to us. We never had a chance of getting him.

Bennell did not cost us Martin.

Sign him up anyway. Its a lot less risk than signing a cooked KK for 3 years on much more coin. He's unbelievably talented.ย

The sensible option, given the talent and the apparent resolve displayed in preparation so far this off-season. Give him a home wherein he can hang his cap. He will reward us - just watch.ย

Reports of Martin on $900k in year one versus Bennell on a base rookie wage. Even if we had the salary space and he was open to coming I would not take him for that or anything close to it.

If he cannot get on the park he is of no use!

Are you referring to HB on low wage of KK on a lot more?

Both fit the bill mono. The odds were stacked against them from day 1. Both were/ are worth a try. Not sure about KK on a 3 year deal though.ย

For $3m over 5 years, who didnโ€™t want to talk to us, and has been a very inconsistent player in his time at Gold Coast! All of a sudden heโ€™s become a star!

vs

A risk on an injury prone player that they believe with new operation might make, for little cost! If he doesnโ€™t come through, we just pick up another rookie!

There is just no comparison between the two players!

Ha....

Even an injured Bennell is 3 times the player that softย [censored] Martin ever will be.

Harley Bennell will get that list spot. No doubts at all.

Frosties calves are wagu beef BTW.

Do you live anywhere near Box Hill?

This from another club's fansite, which would suggest the injury is not fatal ...

He was running the tan in Melbourne footy club get up this morning being supervised by someone else in uniform. They havenโ€™t put a line through him yet.

Keith Greig!!!? That was when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth. The system was totally different then, as was the game of football.

Im nearly certain he will get a spot. This would have to have been expected. Hiccups and hurdles all part of it.

Of course it isn't. The Hun should be ashamed at putting that [censored] article out. Surely some Essendon player did something the day before, as they report pretty much everything any of them do.

Good news and a great part of the recovery process - fitness/distance work at pace. Glad to hear.

โ€œI believe the calf is not as bad as some doomsayers are suggesting and that he may be running as early as tomorrow,โ€ he (Garry Lyon) told SEN Breakfast.

โ€œHeโ€™s still got a lot of work to do obviously, heโ€™s a mile away from getting back into it.

โ€œThere were reports when he did the calf that this what it and it was the end and all that sort of stuff, but itโ€™s my understanding that he could be running tomorrow.โ€

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking. ย We filled our boots with percentage โ€” now a whopping 520.7% โ€” and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourneโ€™s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's ย six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his teamโ€™s unfulfilled potential rang true โ€ฆ well, almost.ย
