The coach has 2 sides, does that mean we have to have co captains, or can someone sit next to the coach and not be captain?

Max is either Co-Captain or Vice.

Depends whether they are going with the Co-Captain model or going solo.

I doubt Viney will be demoted.

I'd say it's Co Captains, will be interesting to see how a fully fit Viney goes this year.

I have no problem with co-captains, but TBH, I've really gone off Viney as a captain.  So many times last year (and prior) his message about how well we were doing was well off the mark.  In contrast, Gawn's message was spot on.

Vineys leadership is mainly onfield. We all know that. If he is fit to go, there will be no worries at all about his leadership. Two fantastic captains.

Good point Damo.

They complement each other well. Max is terrific off field and with his communication.

There is no way Viney won't be captain - it would a demotion and and would only create unhelpful strange ju ju and fugazi around the club when the narrative we are pushing is redemption.

I have no doubt Max and Jack will be announced as co captains.

Gawn and Viney co-captains. Will be announced soon.

Hoping that a fully fit Viney can get back to his 2015-2017 levels of impact and leadership.

Gawn has shone the last few years and developed as a leader on field and off field. Excited to see him as captain and hope the knee injury doesn’t impact his year.

Good oil or gut feel mate?

Haven't heard anything personally, but would think the stars are all aligned for it to be announced this week before the next episode of To Hell And Back. Balances out the bad news of late, post-camp, team photo, membership etc etc.

Maybe they plan to announce it as part of the doco?

Could be. They did have the Nate Jones 'revelations' in the last one.

Could work either way: Maximize publicity for the doco (which got excellent coverage this week), or spread out the publicity for the club more over the week.

We cant really get around the fact that Maxy is one of the most popular and valuable players in the entire league. As an on-field leader, i would happily follow young Jack into battle (Metaphorically speaking only), but the poor guy isnt exactly the most elegant public speaker. I dont mind at all if we have co-captains again with Jack ( If you want an example of a player who bleeds for the jumper, and who others are happy to follow) and Max ( Who is probably the most presentable "Face" of MFC).

Lock it in.

Apologies for the close proximity of this thread to the “Gawn as co-captain 2020” thread, but I’m more interested here about the concept in general. Just read that GWS have scrapped it and are reverting back to the traditional model.

I’m keen to understand what the genuine benefits are of the co-captain thing. I personally struggle to understand the concept. It seems the potential to cause an imbalance amongst the team is heightened when two players are expected to address the players in huddles/discuss issues with the umpire/talk to the press/communicate the game plan to the other players during match-time. Any disparity between the two captains could easily be the source of confusion and frustration, to a potentially result-altering end. What if the players felt one was clearer than the other? Wiser? More trustworthy? Is the risk of factions forming a hysterical or realistic concern?

Personally, I would like to see MG as the sole captain. But I’m wondering if anybody here can convince me that having two-captains (any two-captains) is a positive thing.

Co Captaincy model is absolute Garbage!

Like the majority, I’m not a fan of co- captains. It worked for the Swans. Good for them. Why WE need to persist with trying it I’m not entirely sure. Having that one strong leader the whole group can get behind appeals far more.

My preference is Gawn as sole captain but if not then just go with Viney and back him in.

For the record, the way Goodwin was talking on SEN, I think Viney is a lock and Gawn likely to be co-captain alongside him. We seem wedded to this stupid co-captain thing.

So what makes it work and what doesn’t?

Do you really think the swans won flags because they had co-captains? Or Richmond won flags because they had 1 captain?

It’s what works for the team.  Viney maybe the best leader at the club but doesn’t perform that well in front of the media, so a co-captain who is able to lead on field and handles this media side makes sense.  The captains role is not just about performing on field or leading but incorporates selling the club, talking to sponsors, coterie groups etc.

Why the hell is this captaincy issue taking so long to sort out?  Name Gawn and be done with it. What’s the point for speculation to drag on for 6 months? Not impressed.

If Viney was demoted and it causes the issues you mention it just confirms this club is a bunch of [censored] losers and a lost cause.

Absolutely.
1 Leader, no issues, no favourites

Just get behind him and work as a unit

I'm personally of the opinion we should have one captain and a VC, simple as that. 2-3 more in the leadership group, we don't need it to be bloated.

Max as captain for me, Jack as vice.

Que? Wouldn't sole captaincy be the definition of selecting a favourite?

Did anyone catch what Mark Stevens had to say yesterday? Apparently the players have voted for captaincy with an announcement coming as early as next week.

Are you referring to the following tweet?

I believe the vote he is referring to is about the Saints.

AFL.COM.AU article  yesterday regarding the Dees captaincy mentioned voting & announcement in the coming weeks.

"MELBOURNE is poised to vote on its captaincy structure in the coming weeks"

Also added that "the Demons didn't hold the leadership group vote on their recent Maroochydore training camp and have 10 days before their first Marsh Community Series game."

The world is coming to an end, the Melbourne Football Club haven't announced their captain yet.

I’m curious why Nev isn’t firmly in the conversation.  The guy is a great story and seemingly well-loved. Perhaps from the inside is quieter than we are aware of but he represents grit and resilience, qualities we’ve lacked the span of our premiership drought.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
