Once upon a time we wanted Tom Lynch with our pick 12.  He went at pick 11.  We took Lucas Cook instead.

Dropping two spots can be a monumentally painful thing to do if the picks don't go our way.

That's my problem with this deal. If it was done on draft night I'd be all for it because we'd know exactly who's gone in the top 7 and who's left at 8/9/10.

The club must be very confident of their research and rankings.

That and doing a favour to Fremantle for no real reason...

If we get pick 28 for nothing our end then it's a good reason!

Let's hope our guys have done the right calculations.

I still like the idea of trading back even further.

Pick 28 is not a free hit!

To get 8 we gave up 26 and 50 from 2019 and our 2020 first.

We have now swapped it for 28, and Freo's 2020 fourth ie 55 to 72.

We have actually downgraded 26 to 28 and 50 to next year and swapped next years first for this year's #10.

Its an ok deal but not something to write home about.

We probably were not going to use pick 50

And we probably won't use Freo's 2020 pick 55-72

But we still effectively downgraded 26 to 28 in the trade.  Not wanting to make a big deal of it but some posters keep thinking 28 is a free hit.  It isn't.

is that the second time you've mentioned it now?... 'tis verging on a big deal to you :)

My only concern is that if we decide to not bid on Green and a bid for Henry doesn't come in before 7, then the top 10 is diluted with GWS and Freo getting to pick an extra two players before our pick comes around. I'm sure the club has factored this into their equation and have some certainty of what players will be available at "10".

That being said its;

3, 8 and 97

or

3, 10, 28.

We have improved our position significantly.

Another way to look at it is we started our draft position with 3, 22, 40. That has since moved to 3, 10, 28, + Langdon. While we've lost Frost, and a Future first plus later picks we were never going to use at the draft.  Essentially a 6 spot downgrade for Langdon, then a future 1st and 40 for pick 10. We only plan to use 3 picks this draft so we've done ok to improve our position.

On a side-note, if my calculations are correct that means we won't be using our PSD pick...

You are probably right.

We take 3 draftees then have two spots left:  Bennell?  Brown? or keep one free to take a DFA, someone in the SPP or in next year's mid year draft.

Im just p1ssed off I now have to read another 20 odd draft profiles on who might be available at 28.

Kysiah Pickett, Elijah Taylor or Dylan Williams.

It might be a slight loss but the draftees keep sliding up and down on recruiters preferences. It says more about how highly strung this time of the year is. Not to mention how reactive the recruiters seem to be (or what they say to journalists). It does seem jackson has been a bolter and Young and maybe even Anderson(!) might slide. I think we are playing our hand very well.

Be funny if we get Young and Jackson at 3 & 10.

Edit: I can envisage the possibility of GCS deciding on Green instead of Anderson. But AFL have probably said they have made their bed.

With so many teams having f/s or academy players mooted to be Top 30 in 2020 draft I reckon this Freo pick will be part of a trade to a points hunting team.

This trade simply makes it a top 10 pick this year instead of next; the rest of the picks are now a wash. And it will all depend on where we finish and who we pick.

I hope they get who they want and that they are right.

  • Demonland changed the title to The Splitting of Pick 8

This has been said multiple times recently but in the age of future picks, trades should rarely be looked at in a vacuum. This seems like an okay trade to me and let's see how the next two drafts play out.

I just hope we haven't handed Freo Robertson and Henry. I don't have an opinion on Henry, but Robertson seems like an interesting type at 10. And then there's Kemp.

Go and grab a beer your glass is half empty

1. GC - Rowell

2. GC - Anderson

3. Melb - Jackson

4. GWS - Young

5. GWS - Green (Syd bid)

6. Syd - Flanders
7. Ade - McAsey

8. Freo - Stephens

9. Freo - Robertson

10. Carl - Serong

11. Melb - Kemp/Weightman/Ash

This swap has been in the pipeline for a while.

We will pick Jackson, then whoever slides to 10 (I don’t think it is weightman who they want), have heard it may be Stephens, and they are wanting Pickett, they really, really like him.

I would suggest we may need to do something to get pick 28 a bit lower to get Pickett though.

Also heard De Koning has been spoken about. Super tall but plays tall back at the moment but has played as an onballer in juniors!

Key defender is a huge need alongside small forward. In an ideal world I'd love a classy mid and then by some miracle De Koning and Pickett. 2 of 3 would be a start.

Where do they see Jackson fitting in with Gawn? It seems they think he is coordinated enough to make it as a key forward.

Adelaide likely to grab Stephens.  Dees would have a tough choice here. I’d prefer Kemp and Ash over Weightman

Can’t see Stephens passing Adelaide and Freo who just traded all there wingmen

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
