Lever Making the Most of the Off-Season

Featured Replies

anyone know our surgery count for the off season?

Such an important player for the club and make no mistake, could comfortably become captain one day. I bloody well hope so !!!!!!

I wouldn't say  i was a Lever doubter but its fair to say nor was i completely sold on him.

But i could not have been more impressed with his attitude and approach in the last two games of the season, particularly in the horror game against the swans.. You learn a lot about people in adversity and when things are not going well. And Lever raised his intensity and will to compete and provided a clear example to others. That is leadership.

He makes a terrific point about the best defenses playing together regularly. Its absolutely critical and a huge reason why the Tiger's back half is so effective.

First pre season at the dees

He did the 2018 preseason with us.  This is will be his 6th preseason as an AFL football so has reached the point of being a 'hardened' AFL player (usually 5 pre-seasons), altho he looks like he could do with some weight and muscle!

His comment about there will be 'moments when he will roll his ankle or hurt his knee' (injuries that ruined his 2019 season, after recovering from his ACL) made me wonder if he expects them to recur.  Time will tell.  Hope he gets back to his best and gets a few good seasons happening.

Sorry to be pedantic: he was traded in at end of 2017 so he did his 2018 preseason wtih us.  He did his ACL half way thru the 2018 season.

Lots on here think the moving on of so many assistant coaches proves it wasn’t injuries that sent us tumbling this year.

Viney doing his first preseason in five years, Lever doing a preseason, Oliver doing a preseason and May not coming back like December Christmas feast will see us improve rapidly.

Bring in Yze for some Clarkson IP and we challenge next year.

KK, J.Smith, AVB, Petty, Weid and all last years draftees also doing a full pre season would also help.

Plus Langdon, Tomlinson and maybe another handy new player, would further help.

Needs to bulk up by a few kilos. Shouldn’t affect his ability to intercept but will aid his ability to hold his ground against oppo forwards.

Good luck Jake you deserve a good crack at it, along with half your team mates. I also agree MCQ that he needs to put on a few extra Kg's of muscle to help him hold his ground.

You'll be saying that a lot over the off season.  There will be puff pieces galore.

Your post is full of words. How do we know you want actions and outcomes?

‘Making the most of the off season’...as opposed to sitting around all summer punching cones, smashing JD n Coke tinnies, eating Doritos and playing COD for 6 hours a day? What else would he say?!

But in in all seriousness, I hope Jake can stay fit and have a big impact next year, will make a huge difference.

Jake Lever played in a Preliminary Final today for Ormond Amateurs in VAFA C Section.

Also in the Ormond team was former Demon Simon Buckley and his brother who’s the skipper.

Didn't help - they lost.

Swap choice of grog (beer) and video games (sport sims) and it sounds strangely familiar to my summers as a young bloke (winters too for that matter)

We won't properly challenge without outside run and a far greater ability to spread from the stoppages (something we've rarely demonstrated except for the very back end of 2018).

Richmond, Collingwood and the Lions all have pace and spread from the stoppages. We won't be competing with them unless we sort out our list shortages. If we do, our ball-winning ability will go along way to surpassing the aforementioned teams.

Natural leader of men, well spoken and can really play

A good choice for captain

Outside run and spread is as much about structures and gameplan as personnel.

Don’t get me wrong I want list improvement but my point was we need someone from under Clarkson. He seems to be breeding people to make teams achieve.

Like him for how he plays but in terms of captaincy there is a touch of the figjam about him I'm still assessing

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
