8 years in one club asย an assistant is a long time... like all of us we have a shelf life in any role & both club & him need a fresh change & new eyes/ideas to improve & go forward!

ย

No bueno.

Jade is a real loss, one of the few who knows what's he's doing. Plus, he won't have been happy with being an assistant forever.

And who can blame him for leaving, anyway? Pains me to say it, but the Roos looked OK for some parts of this year, esp with Rhys, bar that one game in particular. At this stage the Roos look more like a premiership team than us haha

Shame to lose him. Looking distinctly like Goody has said or convinced the top brass, :It aint me"

Is there any coaching position that is untouched other than Goodwin? Every position has been changed or personnelย  moved on.

Yet accordingย to some here our performance in 2019 is nothing to do with coaching - its all our injuries and surgeries. Those peopleย lookย pretty stupid now.ย  This is the biggestย  1 year cleanout of coaching staff in the AFL for probably a decade

Sadly we are stuck with Goodwin. The cause of it all.ย

ย

ย

Noone said it was "all" down to injuries and surgeries, only that those issues exacerbated other issues. A down year was made horrendous due to these additional factors. Some of us are able to understand nuance.

Fwiw I wanted the assistants cleaned out last year, I thought we needed fresh eyes then.

Well at this rate they wonโ€™t have to worry about doing a review, unless they look in the mirror.

Apart from Richo, who are our FD ins?

A stack have departed.

Disappointed Rawlings has left, not surprised though. He's a quality assistant.

That's the problem Mooney I think Goody is not easy to work with

Gee I hope there is a Strategy in all of this

It's looking desperateย  with no clear plan

ย

Great service to the club. ย Will be missed. ย Now clear the decks of Chaplin, Plapp. ย Twig was miles better than both of them combined. ย Get in assistants from Hawthorn, Eagles. ย Clubs with winning culture and success in developing players.

Let's look for a silver lining. There won't be any familiar faces for our players (apart from Goodwin) so they'll have to prove themselves all over again. Maybe it will shift them out of any comfort zone they may have worked themselves into.

Goodwin knows he is on thin ice.ย

By that i mean, he has been told. He has to learn to work with others, very quickly.ย

And I think that's hyperbole, as is SWYLs post below yours.

Understand the frustration of a year well below expectation, but lets not make [censored] up

Coached our backline when it had very poor personnel though, and it definitely improved in the time he was in charge.

Took Casey to a Grand Final, that's a reasonable achievement I would think too.

Not sure where you're getting the feeling we were happy to see him leave? Releasing him doesn't mean we wanted him gone. My gut feel is he would have been annoyed at being brought back when he made it clear he wanted to be in charge of his own team for a while.

ย

He had good success with Dunn and Jetta but I remember those were also the days where we bemoaned how many goals were let go out the back and other aspects of the defensive system.ย

Plapp took Casey to a grand final too. Rawlings was successful at Casey but I never saw any great tactical brilliance or skill development.

I would've thought getting credit for a forward line turnaround would've been good on the CV and if we really wanted him we could've extended his contract and given him a choice of roles to further his career. The 'coach you own side' thing is a bit overplayed, the majority of senior coach hires still come from assistants at the clubs - or in case of this year the caretakers.

I'm not saying he isn't a good coach, just similar to North losing Leigh Tudor because Shaw got the gig ahead of him there's always going to be a degree of turnover especially when there's more senior coach changes.ย

I'm a bit of an assistant coach skeptic in that I don't think any one individual is all that brilliant. So many of the best assistants get hired and are complete flops as senior coaches. When it comes to assistants I think it's about getting people who have particular skills and getting the right people in the right roles.

You would know right? ITS A SPECULATIVE OPINIONย  IN A FORUM

What you think is just thatย

ย

We have signed Richardson. You do not agree to come to a Club without knowing the role you are to do. Why are we not being told what that role is?

It's made up hyperbole, that's what it is, yes, my opinionย

Who did you directly hear that Goodwin was hard to work with? Give me a quote, and not from a journo.

I wonder if we might have a look at Hirdy in a Senior Assistant role. We need the best people and Hirdy brings an aura and win at all cost mentality. Thoughts?ย

Very strange indeed. The boards fate is directly tied to Goodwin's now. Getting rid of all of his assistants, yet if he turns out to be the culprit, what a waste of 2 years and resources it will have been.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, weโ€™ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: โ€œThen came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.โ€ Today, weโ€™re back in the same place although oneย difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, โ€œIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, โ€ฆโ€ย  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
