I'm so annoyed at Mahoney.

How frustrating that he sorted another signature with the minimum of fuss and avoided a messy back and forth that might have become a distraction if left unresolved.

I'm pretty annoyed at the club in general actually. I mean why isn't it leaking, with juicy tidbits seeping out to fan the fire and fill up the angst bucket. I mean don't they know they are supposed to be in crisis. I read it on DL so it must be true.

And don't they know these days the onus is no longer on those spreading rumours to provide some evidence for their fanciful tales. It is on the club to provide evidence the rumours are not true. Where there's smoke. Hold on there's none. Give us some smoke dees.

Why can't they take a leaf out of clubs like the Crows and Freo. Those clubs know how to have a crisis. External reviews. No reviews. Sack their coach (the one they one they got to replace their previously sacked coach).  Sack the CEO. Pay outs. Leaks. Crazy short men. Media in a tizzy. Sources close to the club.

One of the great MFC clubmen who needs to be given a role or two and just left to play them in 2020.  Forward for mine where he has less chance of his usual clangers off HB and focuses on scoring the odd goal and pressuring inside 50.

With a full pre-season and some better off field management by Goody & Co, which imv was ordinary this year, he should bounce back from what was probably his lowest rated season since his very early entre' year or two.

Love the Jones boy and hopefully the boys get around him in the off season and the season proper and get this train back on the track.

I'm not sure who's running the media contingent down at the club but i would be recommending they don't say too much about pre-seasons,  how they are ready to get back into it blah blah blah.  Better off just confirming they stuffed up in 2019, the Club's got some serious work ahead of it both in the trade period and the off season (all aspects) and leave it at that.

The proof of the player's "hurt feelings" pudding and efforts to correct the horrors of 2019 in the off season will be in the response we get in the opening round and the next five or so in 2020.  Far too often this club talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

The only person i really want to hear from is Pert with a summary of the outcomes/actions following the internal review, trades/delistings etc and Big Maxy when he fronts the press after being appointed  'Sole Captain'.

Are people kidding he is not in the best 22 right now? He played every game this year, who takes his position? We have so many average players that I don't believe anyone can deservingly take his spot.

The key to answer that question is first determining what Jones' position is. I think it's safe to say it's not the wing and we've got more than enough on ball options.

If it's half back then we don't have a lot of great options after Salem but we could use Harmes there as well as Hibberd or Hore as far better defenders.

If it's half forward then it's another list of hardly inspiring players but if we have 2 talls, Melksham, Fritsch and a crumber then it's out of Lockhart, Hunt (if not traded), C Wagner, Hannan, J Smith, ANB etc plus any recruits or kids who come on.

It's not that these guys will be better over all footballers than Jones but they almost certainly will be quicker, better defensively (at either end of the ground) and more suited to the role.

Jones is going to have to be smarter and add value to the team with experience. A full preseason gives him a chance at fresh legs and training in a certain role. The concern is I'm only guessing whether I think forward or back makes more sense.

Brilliant!!! Jones has been an absolute warrior through some terrible periods and deserves to be rewarded in the twilight of his career.

Love him. Found it hard to watch him this year but glad that he'll make the 300 club. (Fingers crossed).

One comment was of great interest to me - "Playing multiple roles all year and having a really injury interrupted prep before the season, I managed to get through the year."

I'm not sure about anyone else, but @Satyriconhome said that nobody had an injury interrupted pre-season so I don't know why Jones would choose to lie about something like that...

If you must point score then get what I said right

We had players in rehab I watched them train and come out of rehab fully fit and ready to go, most I spoke to told me they were fit and ready to go and had actually improved their aerobic capacity,  so I took that on face value as well as watching them train

I for one don't like players using a poor pre season as an excuse, they are professional footy players, they do extra to make up the shortfall

Jones has gone out of his way to say he got through the year, maybe like Lewis, he is using this statement to other players, who are maybe using the pre season as an excuse

Just marvee

THIS  is Melbourne

Good on you Nathan Jones let's hope that we can get you to 300 games next year, you deserve the chance to get there not that it is guaranteed but Neita is a bit lonely at the 300 Club catch ups at MFC.....................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One could argue our best 22 this year was pretty poor in general Jones but statistically at least he was well within the best 22.

A poor year by Jones's standards though.

For all the Jones baggers . . . based on 2019 form, he gets a game in 2020 in front of:

  1. ANB
  2. Hunt
  3. OMac
  4. Hannan
  5. Spargo
  6. Garlett
  7. Both Smiths
  8. Both Wagners
  9. JKH
  10. Stretch
  11. KK
  12. Lockhart.

Yes, he's lost a yard, turns it over and lacks game awareness. But it's not like we have Matthews, Buckenara and the Rat in the ressies waiting for a game.

Typical, not surprised at all, Hawthorn move on Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Roughead, and we cling to the turnover merchant, it will finish badly of course, it always does at the MFC.

Self Portrait I take it.

Be very helpful to boys at Casey next year and may fill in if we have a few injuries during the year.

Nathan Jones is 31.

Hodge is 35.

Mitchell was 34 when he left Hawks.

Roughead is 32.

Lewis is 33.

Hawks only wanted to move on one of Lewis and Mitchell as they went 1 and 2 in their BnF the year they left.  It was to relieve the salary cap.  Both could have easily played on and made the Hawks best 22.

Roughead was cooked 12 months ago.  Completely cooked.  Hawthorn kept him on the list for leadership and because of what he means to the club and supporters.

Hodge has clearly been a huge part of Brisbane’s success.  Who would you rather have young players look up to- Luke Hodge or Ben ‘pinchy’ Stratton.

Hawthorn erred in cutting all 3 at the same time; their list is running on fumes and their half-rebuild is being papered over by Clarkson’s nous.

Jones is younger than all of them and is playing better football.

I agree binman, why can't they be as ridiculous as half of Demonland at present.

So the Skip is holding the ball, all good , just follow team rules, kick it down the line, we are in front, one minute to go and kill the ball, Jones kicks to a contest where we are out numbered badly in the middle of the ground, and the game is over, and on that last kick Mahoney can’t get his ink on a contract quick enough, that’s leadership, that’s deflating.

No- it’s one error being viewed in isolation.

Cyril Rioli had Hawthorn’s last possession in the 2011 prelim.  Turnover.  Hawthorn lose by 3 points.  Rioli is a terrible player.

I guess that negates his four premierships and Norm Smith medal in 2015.

Call me a blind optimist but I think without the burden of leadership next year Jonesy will be back into some decent form. If the club really believes the time is now for us to challenge in finals and ultimately the premiership (which they have from recent trading etc.), then I completely agree with re-signing Jones. Will have to work his [censored] off for his spot like Lewis did, but I reckon there’s a spot for him somewhere in the forward line. Is a pretty decent kick at goal and wont be having to run as far in a midfielders role.

It’s been difficult watching him this year and I’ve knocked him pretty hard for his lack of leadership as well, but the man is a true champion and always says it like it is. Deserves to make all the success in the world and I’m happy that we’ve backed him in for that opportunity.

And Hawks to win the 2019 premiership... oh wait.

Jones deserves another year so that he can find a position where he adds value. His best position was always on the ball as both an attacking and defensive player who could win the ball and deny the opposition easy use of the ball. The only thing that has changed is that he is no longer alone in this role and the midfield is becoming crowded.

Time for the coaches to find a new role for him. Traditionally slowing and aging onballers went to either the back pocket or the forward pocket. I believe that a role in the forward line will suit him best because he is tough in close, tackles hard and can snag an goal so will make defenders earn their positions.

Unless of course the coaches realise that his greatest efforts were at the centre  bounce, not running wide down the wing. Leave that for Brayshaw and Harmes. He is like Clarrie - he hunts the ball in close, not the player, which makes him so effective.

Any success in 2020 without Jones will be hollow. He has earned the right to enjoy success and should remain as co-captain so that his hands will be on any silverware. The other co-captain can do the actual leading.

On balance it's probably the right decision. Whether Jonesy is good enough to be in our starting 22 is debatable but it's a moot point if our best 22 can't get on the park each week. If he continues to stay healthy and in reasonable form then it's likely he'll have a part to play in our climb back to respectability next year. A 1 year contract that's heavily performance based (if this is fact) looks like a good outcome all things considered.

Hodge a much better player still.

Your point ?

We're  currently  an irrelevant  club pandering  to an 'ideal'

Somehow a bloke getting  3oo is more the goal than winning silverware.

I dont begrudge  Jones. Good for him.

Sums us up entirely.

Both him & Viney had an interrupted pre-season only managing to put in about half the usual build up.

Reason for Edit:  just saw this off the MFC site from Viney (extract)....

..."This is probably the first time l'm not having post-season surgery, so l'll be looking to have a rest for two to three weeks and let the body recuperate," he said. You get to the end of the season and you're pretty banged up, so you do have too give it a little bit of time to recover, but once that period is done, I will be into training.

"I'm pretty motivated, after the season we had, to get into training," Viney said. "I haven't had a pre-season for three to four years now, so l'm just looking forward to getting my body into the best condition possible to get through a pre-season."

End.

P.S. That highlighted part is a worry.  Would have thought he'd be always motivated and super motivated after a seaaon like that.

That really is nitpicking Jack is not a Rhodes scholar nor should he have to carry a thesaurus to press conferences

My post was saying that Hawthorn made a mistake in cutting Hodge.

It was in response to a poster saying we should do what Hawthorn did.  Hawthorn acted in haste.

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
