Awkward day today as the wife follows the dogs while the three kids and I the demons. Wanted to go to the game but oldest daughter has her first gymnastics competition this arvo so will cheer her on and scream at the maggot gymnastics judges instead ? (jokes). Will have the iPad at the ready of course so while the other miniature people are doing their routines I can be watching our boys beat up on the dogs!

Go Demons!!! ?❤️?❤️?❤️?❤️

After witnessing the winning performances in this round of two other clubs heavily affected by injuries - Collingwood and Essendon - all I can say is the time for making excuses is well and truly over.

Essendon are missing only 4-5 of their best 22. Their injury woes this year have been exaggerated by the media.

Collingwood is another story. Good depth.

Did anyone hear anything about Oliver doing a fitness test yesterday? Saw something about it on social media but can't seem to see anything here from any of the regular track watchers.

I shall be viewing this game from the ever warm and welcoming bosom of The Manor.

It will interesting to watch the impact Preuss up forward. I do not expect him or Max to kick a bag as they will be swarmed by defenders whenever the pill gets anywhere near. The ball will come to ground.

However, hopefully the likes of Hannan, Petracca, Brayshaw and Hunt will be presented with resultant opportunities.

I will not be surprised if we get a sneaky win out of this.

If we are close at 3/4 time, I shall lock the maid up.

Was never valid ;)

Lock this in as a win....just not ours

Just want to see some invention...some clever use of the troops at hand.

What I love most about supporting Melbourne is the fact that it is the flagship team on both a micro and a macro level of  the AFL’s notion of an equal playing field / or ‘any given sunday’.

I love that season to season we don’t know what we’re going to get, and even if we’re up 6 goals early in the 4th - the players love to model just how even the competition really is.

time to break out the popcorn for a 10 goal loss.

How on Earth do we go plan to kick goals with no forward line?

We will be destroyed unless the midfield wins everything

gonna be a long day methinks

Dogs are in decent form but are nothing to be scared of. They lost to Carlton and the suns this year and have 7 wins to our 5.

Our defence and midfield could get on top if we are switched on. Close tagging of the Bont is crucial including a plan when he goes fwd.

It will be low scoring. frustrating game to watch unless we lower our eyes and hit up the mid sized fwds.

bugger it, I reckon we will win.

Lever is overdue to sing our song post-game. Hope he remembers the words because we win by 20 today.

Pruess actually leads out rather well and is deceptively quick. I expect we’ll go in low and fast to the big unit. Good luck to anyone who gets in his way.

Max on the other hand relies on judging the high ball so he’ll need help here.

Pruess will kick a bag!

I like the idea of playing Max forward as much as we play Preuss there. Only while we have Sam out of the team.

Max’s marking is exceptional!

Nope but heard he has a leg issue.  Late out?

I guess potentially, haven't heard it confirmed that he did have a fitness test and have no idea how it went if he did. Just a rumour at this stage I guess, but did hear calf somewhere a few days ago now that you mention a leg issue.

Exactly. Pies also only have 4-5 of their best out. And as you day have good depth, we dont and so tbey can cover injuries better than us.

I can feel a win comeing on us by 5 goals the big bloke to kick 5

Dogs don't really have a forward line either.

I'm not so sure about that bb. If he kicks 2or 3 he'll do his job.

As I mentioned above, I reckon it's more about the other forwards using the opportunities he will create and of course getting the ball in there quickly

Must be some solid bets on us, into $2.15. Line now 5.5 after being 12.5 earlier this week.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
