I think Max does enough and doesn't need the burden of captaining. That and he doesnt really show the on field generalship expected of a captain, although he certainly leads by example with his effort and output. Just let Max do what he does best - play great footy.

Lever for mine.

Im not sure Gawn or Lever's knees can handle the weight of captiancy.

I think Max is the obvious choice as captain and think he would take the role in his stride without harming his game. I also think we should give serious thought to making lever and May vise captains. Although I’d be happy if we made a call early in pre season that we were going to have a sole captain instead of 2 and let the players vote on who they want.

'Skill' has nothing to do with leadership.

Sorry but that’s nonsense. Nobody gets considered for a captaincy/leadership role before exhibiting a degree of proficiency that sets them apart from the pack.

Nick Maxwell became a decent player after being named captain. You could argue he wouldn't have been best 22 in a near unbeatable Pies team if he wasn't captain. Except he, like all strong leaders, excelled and exerted +100% to lead from the front. He was an average player striving to be the best. That's great leadership.

Is it just a coincidence then that most of the posters here are suggesting our most talented player be captain?

Its Gawn for Captain and then

May VC   He has the hard edge to compliment Max

Melksham Lever and Viney to round it out. I have Viney in so he can continue to learn about leadership.

There's no way May will be made VC due to his fitness levels this year as well as his drinking indiscretion. There will be too much bad PR with that appointment. He needs some credits in the bank - I'd say 2021 would be good for May to be in the LG or even as a VC.

For me it'll be one of the two scenarios next year:

1) Captain: Max Gawn

VC: Viney (Clubs just don't dump you from Co-Captain to just in the LG unless you're in the twilight of your career).

  LG: Jetta and Tmac

2) Co-Captains: Gawn/Viney

    LG: Jetta and Tmac.

This way you have a leader in every aspect of the ground.

I think they'll give Lever another year of focusing on his game before naming him in the LG.

I just get the feeling the club won't have the gall to drop Viney straight out of any vice or co-captaincy duties. At a minimum I think they'll keep him in the LG.

Might be a refreshing change having a captain with some rascal in him. The saintly clean skins on the job for the past decade have all been useless and the culture they helped nurture has been crap. We can’t do any worse.

So you're saying Viney and Jones are our most 'skilled' players then?

Yes, it is.

He's easily our most consistent player, our best trainer, our best speaker and as stated recently by our coach 'his leadership has grown extensively'.

Viney has become an overrated spud. Trade him out. Jones has had it. Force him to stand down as captain. Stop listening to Viney’s dad.

Again I ask

What is Todd Vineys' Job????

No. Sadly they are a collective anomaly. Hence the existence of this thread.

Many posters have pointed out in various threads, that our captains stand out in the league as being the most wanting in the skills department.

Yes it is a coincidence.

Max showed the " follow me "  approach after the 2017 debacle season by training in his own time, and when overseas, to prepare for the redemption which deservingly came his way in 2018.

He just happens to be a great player as well.

But one of the few with leadership qualities at the club at present.

Yes. Max is the only one showing any passion for the club. He’s the only one who is giving 100% out there and the only one around the ball trying to organize and inspire his team mates. He’s developed his leadership skills immensely this year.

Neither Viney or Jones are natural leaders. Lead by example at times, but neither organize the players and constantly fight for the jumper. Both of them have walked away from on ground conflict this year. A good example was when Max got put down by the opposition in round 1. Viney was right there and just walked off. Harmes was the only one who showed any ounce of fight or comradery. Jones has been the same. Neither should be official on field leaders at our club moving forward. If either are, then we’re not progressing.

Viney should be sole captain.  I know he had an average  year but the effort was there and he finally put a full season together. He was inspirational last year and I have faith he will come good.

time for the next level to step in and drive the direction of the club.  I want one of Gus/Trac/Clarry to step up and be promoted to the LG if deserved over preseason. The young group is the one that need to realise they can drive the direction of this club. Gawn does enough and will be weighed down by captaincy imo.

The Gawn/Lever in the LG also.

I agree. Don’t know why the haters have delivered the mob view on Viney.

Jack to be appointed as sole captain.

Gawn and Brayshaw as vice captains

Lever and Tmcd in leadership group.

Not sure on May. He has the leadership on field but needs to have a Top year off field next year. He is one to watch.

May, a crock collecting his Super. Will struggle to stay on the field let alone be a leader.

He is the furtherest thing from a leader we have at the club right now.

No way Oliver or Brayshaw should be anywhere near the leadership group, right now they might be 2 of the most selfish, self absorbed, uninspiring (maybe a bit harsh on Clayton) players on our list, which wills eem liek an overreaction but they havent displayed any leadership this year.

Trac possibly and keep lever out for another year until he gets a full year under his belt.

Melksham and Harmes could be options for the LG.

Trac possibly....Petracca is possibly one of the overrated players in the game at the moment. Still waiting for him to play a whole game. He fits your self absorbed and uninspiring brief perfectly. I’d trade him at seasons end but the club won’t.

I would consider  all positions vacant and give every one a show in view of all the injuries this year...nothing to lose.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
