    Weed will get awful delivery as a forward at vfl level; he might as well get awful delivery at afl level when opposed to better defenders 

    O Mac goes back and allows T Mac to return forward...but Josh Wagner replacing Viney helps the midfield rotations how, exactly?!??

    The Demonland ''go to'' line is to call a player slow.

    vandenBerg is supposedly slow, yet he's one of the fastest at the club.  Petracca is supposedly slow, but his burst speed is better than most at the club.

    Either people guess, or they don't pay attention.

    He doesn't make up any ground, O'Meara puts space on him in fact and then when he needs to adjust his line Wagner gets closer. He is faster than Lewis, I will give you that.

We have the longest premiership drought in the league and are a the butt of many jokes for a reason, and that is because we do no hold any respect or fear because there's no ruthlessness and drive to succeed. 

    Any supporters blindly supporting the club are feeding into the cycle of mediocrity and failure that's plagued us for over half a century. We cannot accept continuous failure. We need to demand more or nothing will change.

    When you select Lewis, Jones, & OMac in backline, they are all slow to very slow, as is Hore.

    Wagner probably average speed, but terrible decision making and if you put him next to Frost, it is just scary.

    Hawthorn forward line looks smaller, quicker and we seem to have picked bigger and slower in our backline, add in it looks likely to be wet. 

    Hard to see what the FD are doing

    please explain how one's need to demand things as a supporter influences this change?

    At the airport biding my time before the flight. My presence was clearly the difference when we played the Swans and am hoping for a win again tomorrow. 

    Hoe many changes for both sides since lasts years semi final?

    Agree that we don't have a lot of options at Casey but the one I would have brought in is Sparrow to play in defence.

    He has got some leg speed and does tackle...

    Particularly with Hawthorns smaller forward set up and the high chance of rain on Saturday it only makes sense to me.

    If we're looking to the future, Wagner is not the answer.

    Hawks: no change. Business as usual... little ups and downs... injured recruits become stars...top 4 aspirations as per normal. Ho hum. 

    Dees: 6 changes! OUTS. Passion, semblance of game plan, healthy “stars”  who get injured, capacity to score, morale, Hogan or watts  as fall guy. INS: business as usual; Fumbles, loss of spark, players looking lost all over the ground, reliable losers, bottom 4 , omac or Petracca as fall guy.

    That is a good example of this young fella's abilities. Clearly made up heaps of ground and finished just half a pace from wrecking O'Meara's goal.

    O'Meara's change in line was due to his awareness of Wagner's closing proximity and speed, and the potential to not get the kick for a goal. Good forward work, good defensive work.

    So many posters complaining about the changes, yet most can only point to 2 others who could come in. The first is Kielty. Whilst I'd like to see what he can do that would leave he and Tim Smith as the key forwards. This seems a diabolical lack of experience to me. When the match committee  decided to drop Weid (who was having zero impact) they had to push TMac forward. They have made the call that at this stage Oscar is a better bet than Petty. I am comfortable with this. Keilty missed out last week when they brought in Smith. Unless he was going to play back he was never going to get a run this week. If Smith gets dropped surely Keilty is next in line.

    Those who want Sparrow in the side instead of Wagner need to consider, like Wagner he is a fringe player who has done little in the games he's played so far. If we are going to play better footy it'll be because the guys who are a lock for best 22 get their acts together. It won't be because of the decisions made over the last bloke picked for the side.

    I want Sparrow in, and it's not because I think he will turn the team performance around.

    Wagner has been tried many times and failed.

    Sparrow is a first year player in development.

    I would prefer us to play Sparrow as he may (may as we don't know yet) have a lot more upside.

    ...and given Nev is going to be out for a fair period of the season it gives us a chance to groom someone to play his position.

    Wagner isn't the answer, Sparrow may be...

    On the contrary. It's a good sign. If you're nervous about team selection it means you still have hope.

    It took me a while to comprehend the changes. Nevertheless, this is how I see it:

    • O Mac replaces T Mac who replaces Weideman (no surprises there)
    • Jones replaces Viney in the guts, which means one of the defenders replaces Jones, nominally on the wing. That's probably going to be Fritsch, so Wagner, in effect, comes in for Fritsch.

    Another possibility is that Salem moves up the ground with Wagner taking his place, but I think that's less likely.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
