I feel like we’d need to outbid Carlton in order to sway him to be a Demon and given the reported $600-750k Carlton are offering, I’m not too sure how smart that is.

just remember guys that next years free agent class is STUDDED. Daniher, Jeremy Cameron, Whitefield, Zac Williams, Grundy and Robbie Gray off the top of my head

An alternative is to pick him anyway and have him sign a 1 year deal in hopes we can convince him to stay after that time. For those who follow NBA, could be a Paul George/OKC scenario (yes I know how that has turned out)

I believe that, if we do draft him (most likely in PSD),  it must be a minimum two year contract under AFL rules.

A one year deal would take Martin to him being a RFA, if we did take him for one year then Carlton offered him what they’re offering him now (or similar) we could get near an end of first round compensation pick.

He wouldn't be a FA if he came to us.

I don't think he's the right player for us. I certainly wouldn't pay above average AFL wage for his services.

Hands down we need to take this kid, he has the X factor we have lacked for years.

We already have the money available, let’s do it. Let’s not be pussys and take a risk.

It’s funny how people see players differently, IMO he has no x-factor whatsoever.

I think i'd rather see Gold Coast take him and beat Carlton after a lengthy 'restraint of trade' arbitration process. Gil makes up rules on the fly, surely he can engineer them holding onto JM until he nets them RFA compo.

Aren't we going to pick up Sam Murray in the PSD anyhow?

I have seen nothing of him that remotely screams X factor.

there's no point having an employee who doesn't want to be there

Heaps of players have been tremendous at clubs they didn't want to be at initially.

I've got no interest in blowing any remaining cap space to sign this guy, but can't believe we'd go in the paper saying "we'll pick him if he wants to play for us". How about saying "we're keeping our options open and reserve our right to draft him if he's there at our pick" in the hope that he either comes around (preferably at a reasonable price) or it hopefully poisons the well by either influencing what the Blues do in the draft or even better convincing them to offer him more money that he's not worth.

If we take Murray, it would most likely be as a Delisted Free Agent, which doesn't require any form of draft pick.

no direct quotes @Supermercado

He's what we need, would be thrilled if he chose Melbourne to take the next step - however quite injury prone so a little wary of the price-tag.  Funnily enough his recent GC highlights package shows him mostly kicking goals against Melbourne and Carlton.

Harley Bennell would be a hell of a lot cheaper and if he can get back to his best, and that’s a big if but at his best he is twice as good as Martin

If he can get his body right (work your magic Burgess), he walks all over Martin. A lot hungrier and more desperate to perform as well (seems to be).

Historically, Bennell's hunger is apparently for another form of performance altogether.

Not apples with apples DD.

Ideally I'd like us to go after both of them.
