A team that finished 17th should not have salary cap issues. It's a win-win situation. Get a good player, or get compensated for letting him slide to Carlton. We improve either way if we play hardball and are smart about it. Time to see what Mahoney and co are made of. If we want him I dont see how we dont have the money. Elliots money is there, plus money for a forward we didnt get if you believe another thread and then push a few other contracts around. Easy 2 Quote

There is no way to take him unless others took a pay cut. There's a chance when we missed out on Elliott we heavily frontloaded Tomlinson and Langdon to buy us flexibility in the future. I'm not sure it's possible to rework deals to create more room, so we really could be low on cap flexibility for 2020. 2 Quote

I can't recall who they are, but I believe we have a number of important players out of contract next year. The club may see the money we were going to use on Elliott, and anything left over, as important in achieving our goals of who we are going to re-sign. If we don't pursue him for financial reasons then there would be far more to it than just not being able to afford him now, but also looking to what we need to do in the future. According to the contracts post by Lucifer's Hero, Harmes. Petracca & Viney are the only big ticket items we have to tick next year. Still reckon Martin gets to Carlton. They can horse trade some picks to satisfy GCS who will promptly delist him. If he wants north of $700K a year, Carlton are welcome to him. Let him chew up their cap. Because if most of their high draft picks & young "stars" progress, the old Bluebaggers are headed for a cap crunch of GWS proportions. Can't keep 'em on minimum chips forever ! Young Blood 2,642 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 Sounds like unless he suddenly swings and decides he would be happy at Melbourne he will end up at the Blues. Pretty rare after a player nominates a club that he doesn't end up there. Sounds like he will ensure we can't afford him so he ends up where he nominated. Quote

Looks great at times but what has he really delivered ? 1 Quote
manny100 1,625 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 He has talent but does not get enough if the ball. Certainly not enough to warrant more than $500k a year. Carlton pick him up for $600k or so they will regret it when they can't afford the real stars. Quote
deelusions from afar 1,894 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 I might be missing something here. But why wouldn't Goldcoast just redraft him (assuming they can fit him in - and they finished 18th so surely they can!). Even if he sits out the year sulking on $700k (or whatever Carlton are prepared to pay him), they will get another early pick in compensation when he leaves for Carlton at the end of the year. So say they finish bottom, it would end up being another top 2 pick? Maybe someone who knows the rules can clarify. Quote

My understanding is that they can do exactly that (pick him up in the pre season draft). From memory there is a process where a player can essentially appeal getting picked up buy a club they don't feel they can play at, but i could be wrong. But really they would only want him if he was fully committed. At this sage they can't afford a player negatively impacting the culture. They essentially said they have so many draft picks they can do without the the blues were offering. Quote
spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 Dees must be struggling given 17th and under tight salary cap pressure. It seems like Frost was jettisoned to fit in Tomlinson and Langdon. But we were after Elliott who would have been after $500k+ a year. Hard to calculate our true position. Lewis $$$ presumably goes to get Langdon in. Quote

jnrmac 20,377 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 (edited) If Melbourne wanted martin we could afford martin. There are all sorts of ways to engineer a salary package. Reading between the lines I'd say that the pay he was looking for(going by media reports) is well over what we think he is worth and so they wont make the effort to try and fit him in. As for Carlton - if they wanted to tie up $1.5m for Papley and Martin they have rocks in their head. Edited October 17, 2019 by jnrmac 3 Quote

AaronDaveyChipsAndGravey 390 Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 What's stopping us from just drafting Martin in the PSD. Won't we be able to determine his contract size and length - or does Martin/his management have any say in what he gets paid? Quote

If we're told to stay away we stay away. Geelong, Fremantle or Essendon would just pick him. Come to think of it they'd want to go to Geelong or Essendon. Quote
