Wow. Only on Demonland could a player on his last legs at the age of 31 be valued higher than 27 old key forward that's played 18 games this season and kicked 25 goals. And that's not even mentioning the 3rd or 4th round pick needed to get it done. Hawthorn had no issue trading Sam Mitchell or Lewis... Why should we?

Nice condescending comment about only on Demonland.

It would have to be the first year Reid has ever put a season together, law of averages says there is another long term injury just around the corner.

I actually rate Reid as a player, he's very versatile but injury has always been the issue.

Sydney have never had the value they would have liked when they signed him to a 5 year deal all those years back.

Jones is durable & has been a great servant. At some stage he will be past his use by date but with the state of the current list/depth that's not now.

He is a heart & soul player.

We only need to look back to junior to understand the damage that can be done when you undersell the value of these players to your club.

Lewis and Jones have around 300 games each. Then big jump back to Garlett on 185 (and will be moved on?).

With Lewis almost certainly gone, just not sure that having Tom Mac and Jake Melksham as our most experienced players, and on around 160 games, is ideal.

caro on classified reckons that he'll sign on no worries as he's not actually that upset with the offer put in front of him

Who'd have thunk Caro to be the voice of reason, hey? ?

I truly can’t match this outrage based on the whole fact he’s just not that good. He’s not Scott Pendlebury. He’s never even won any form of recognition outside this club (no AA). He’d be in the bottom 4 of captains in the league (along with his co captain)

Watching live on Saturday at Marvel Nathan was his predictable self.  Bang it long to contests or opposition, take the 4th option and get tackled, missed handball targets....

It dismaying to watch this issue unfold now , not to mention the storm coming over losing the captaincy which is a must next year.

Many regard him as some sort of scared cow or talisman. Some strange spiritual hold. Heart and soul of the club they say.  Deflects from our perpetual mediocrity.

Fake news.

"Kick rating takes into account the difficulty of a player's kick and attributes an expected percentage for any player to successfully hit a target in various scenarios.

A zero per cent rating means the footballer is performing as expected.

The Demons' best performers on this system with a minimum of 100 kicks this year are Nathan Jones (+5.1%), Christian Salem (+3.2%), Bayley Fritsch (+2.6%) and Harmes (+1.3%)."

I might say and his! I have long held the view that the dees habitually play a game largely based on NJ's skill set.

It appears to be a hard habit to break. He leads the pack in calling for the ball when under pressure and either is tackled( HTB ),hand passes to a person in worse position, kicks it to the opposition or roosts it long without finesse.

Thanks Nathan for the effort but your performances have really been mirrored by the team over a considerable period. All of which doesn't take away from his passion and desire and stoic demon heart. Time to move on in my opinion.

I couldn't care less if he stuck with us through tough times or whatever. He was always just a good B grade player (which is fine), but in his age he is naturally going to fall off a bit in certain areas. Again, that's fine.

What's not fine is him getting paid any more than that offer, because frankly he isn't worth more than that. I don't subscribe to the notion that because he's been around the club a long while that his salary should be measured any differently to the next player. Sentiment should have ZERO bearing when considering contractual and financial matters.

Not happy with that Nate? So long then. Thanks for your service, you've earned a life membership. I'd rather give the money to some younger blokes coming through anyway, because Nate will NOT be the difference in us tasting any sort of success next year (as far fetched as that seems right now).

I hope that doesn't come from Champion Data.  You know the outfit that rated our list No. 1.

Yep, it does. But if you have a more accurate way to quantify kicking, other than a rating based on the difficulty of the kick compared with the expected percentage of a player to nail it, then I'm all ears.

And just FYI - rating a list doesn't determine it's performance.

The thing i think it's important to make sure he's aware of is, IF he signs on again, he is not a lock for the AFL side, that's taking nothing away from what he's done for the club but there is a reality that from here, he has to earn his spot.

You would hope every player thinks that, but not sure that Goodwin has totally reinforced it if you look at selection.

Just caught the tale end of a conversation on On The Couch, I believe they said Jones has been offered a one year contract.

Haven’t read the entire thread so I’m unsure if this is old news or not..

Edited by Ethan Tremblay

“Physically, I feel as good as I’ve ever felt. I’m contributing as much as I have to the team, albeit in some different roles,” Jones told Footy Classified.

“I’m still captain of the footy club, along with Jack and I’m really confident with where my body and head is at right now. I’m committed and more driven than ever to see us succeed”

Plan A. Don't offer him a new contract at all

Plan B. Don't offer him a new contract at all

Plan C. Don't offer him a new contract at all

Plan D. Don't offer him a new contract at all

Plan E. Don't offer him a new contract at all

people are seriously falling for this media driven drivel?

he is out of contract - he gets offered a one year deal on the low side to start negotiations.  his manager ask for more.

at this point the [censored] tom morris says jones has refused a deal.  complete BS

they will work out a deal.  this is how every bloody deal happens FFS

Yeah, nice post.

Jones is a club legend. He deserves a new contract, and I hope and expect he will sign a new one.

I'm surprised by all this negativity towards NJ

Is this the same Jones who sets exemplary training standards, year in, year out?

Is this the same Jones who was wooed by several clubs with big coin, but stayed true to the club he loves?

Is this the same Jones who was the only quality midfielder we had in the dark, dim times?

I think he's earned enough social capital to be transitioned out respectfully and judiciously

He isn’t in his prime anymore and he isn’t our best and only midfielder anymore. That doesn’t mean we discard him like yesterday’s trash. There is a lot to be said for showing loyalty to those who have shown it to you. It’s not just about his position in the team, it’s about team unity and loyalty and harmony.

Disrespecting Jones says to the entire team “sure, be loyal and stick by us in bad times, but when the time comes we will throw you to the curb”.

let's be honest, it's legacy pay from here on out. If AVB, Hannan, Melksham were on the park where would Jones even play? Thank you for your service. One year contract and one more turn around the merry go round. Hope we nab a flag for him but won't happen. TBH I'd not be surprised if he requested a trade to a contender.

Yes Lord

Goody's choices some weeks are mystifying seeming to be unrelated to performance or need.

He'd still be playing off the half back flank, hopefully delivering it to AVB, Hannan and Melksham, in fact if we had those 3 up and firing it would probably make Jones' job a while lot easier. He shouldn't be automatic best 22 next year, but there's certainly a place on our list for him.

If he left then it should be the AFL getting him to the Gold Coast as he's the type of leader they need. However it would be cruel to suffer the career he's had with us then be shipped off there.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
