i find these comparisons odious. You have to judge a player on his contribution over a whole career. TMac has plenty of upside and is just finding his feet as a forward. As for Hogan - who knows and now he is at Freo who cares.

I do wonder if we underestimate a little the hole not having Hogan is going to leave in a our forward line...a flare up of that toe injury to TMac and the key position forward cupboard is looking pretty bare, May could end up doing a TMac!

Preuss and Smith would be back up key forwards. Not of the caliber of Tmac, but not a bare cupboard either

hmmm I wouldn't have a lot of faith in either of those two to anchor a forward line at AFL level...we have so many key defenders when Lever comes back I could see May playing forward a bit, he has shown some aptitude for that in patches.

Riewoldt's been taking too many illicit drugs. Hogan is so overrated it's not funny, he's hopeless in big games and can't kick. T.Mac [censored] all over him.

Preuss, given more 'team time' is going to be the answer, if not at ffwd, then a commission around the chfwd *area* in-between ruck support.  I will personally miss Hogan and do so, already - a very good footy head and capability -  but Preuss can kick 'em from some distance whereas Hoges had to be inside 40m and find space to so do. Double-difficulty. With the Weed and TMac deep fwd with their skill sets, then I'd stab at our gapping problems having been overcome, supported by Gawn on the occasion, with Joel S readily thereabouts and our great fleet of run, carry, feed, space masters who are less subject to altitudinal illnesses.

Tommy Mc, Weed, Preuss, Tim Smith, Keilty (training as a fwd all preseason), Hannan (will only be a few weeks behind), Melksham ( who is really good in the air), Fritsch (if need be), AVB, all can play the medium/tall fwd role

 

I wasn't sure initially which of the Riewoldts opinion this was. The dumb one or the slightly less dumb one. As if it matters.

He's comments re McDonald don't ring true. This time last year McDonald had played majority of the back half of 2017 as a forward and quiet well, stupid comment to say "he wouldn't be on the list as a CHB". 

I love McDonald as forward but he is only a season & a half into been a permanent forward, I want to see the same form again over the course of this year before you'd be calling him top 5 in the comp.

At least he didn't have Paddy McCartin in his top ten...

I think we'll miss Hogan enormously this year, his workrate up and down the ground is second to none, he was averaging career best midfielder-like numbers for the most part of the year. He was I would still hazard a guess getting the best defender most weeks from the opening bounce. His ability to be that link up marking option is one that Weideman has yet to master, albeit in the nascent stages of his career, lets hope those finals games weren't a flash in the pan for Weids, I dont think they were but we are putting all our eggs in the basket of he being the foil key forward this year, I cant see Pruess kicking double digit goals. Tim Smith is a capable b-list backup and then its  tumbleweeds for our KPF depth.

 

Saty gets it right. For the first time in a long, long time we have real choices for each position.

Saty's list is only the talls. Wait til we add the smalls like Jeffy, Spargo, Tracca, ANB and whoever slides down from the centre and there are real, multiple choices for all spots. Good luck being on the selection committee.

I will miss Jesse because his footy smarts were a standout and, in a strengthened forward line where he was no longer the only target,  he had the potential to excel. Whilst we have replacements for his goal kicking, there is no replacement for his footy smarts.

Posted before DemonDave's comments. I agree with his assessment of Jesse. He was that good when played up the ground.

Jessie is a gorilla that can barely kick the skin off a pudding and is suspect @ distances 40m+ Until he fixes that he will always disappoint. That he has the football DNA and brain is without doubt. FWIW I still think he can find that distance if he works at it.

He is probably correct. However TMac will never gives the Dees the same level of problems.

If Tom hadn't missed the first five games of last season he could've potentially got 70 goals. Based on this statistic he is much better forward than Jesse Hogan. 

I'd like to see the comparison between Hogan and McDonald in big games.

It's funny. Hogan is a beautiful kick in play, while McDonald was often a suspect kick in play. On the flip side Hogan is a dodgy kick for goal, while McDonald is a borderline automatic kick for goal.

May will play forward too. Don't be surprised if he is similar to McDonald when kicking for goal.

May also barrels his opponent when marking (or spoiling), while Hogan is more of a position marker, he doesn't generally jump into his opponent. 

Hogan also has a less secure pair of hands than McDonald, who has a great pair of mitts. Watch how often Hogan bobbles marks. Hogan is a bit like Neitz who often got rid of his opponent only to spill the mark. (Neeta still took lots of marks, tho. Weight of numbers, etc.)

Not sure what May's hands are like.

I would play May forward if necessary, apart from TMac we don't have any other proven key forwards now Hogan is gone. Weed looked great in 2 finals but he hasn't done enough to prove himself yet, T Smith is a VFL quality player lets be honest and not tall enough at AFL level and Preuss is a ruckman....the rest are small sand mediums. I think May himself flagged he will play as swingman this season with stints up forward as required. When Lever comes back we wil have him, Omac and Frost which is much better tall depth than we have in the forward half of the ground.

Do a quick Google of Hogan's stats for similar key position forwards at the same stage of their career development and he is right up there with the best in the game.  Put this is all in the context of starting off his career in a side which struggled to win a game and then some fairly serious personal/health issues in the years that followed and I think it's a pretty impressive performance to date.  Jessie could still be anything (or totally mediocre) from this point on.

T Mac has been a quality player for a long time and I'm so rapped to see him finally get some reconition for his output.  The guy would have be one of the best endurance athletes in the league, particularly for a guy of his size and considerable strength.  His goal kicking has been phenomenal.  Great character and great MFC clubman (even if Max says Tom's the worst bloke in the team).

I'd like to see both these guys above all the others on Nick Riewoldt's list, but there is only one I want to see with a premiership medallion around their neck for their present club.

The positions in modern football are not set in stone like they once were, especially in our team where we seem to love to experiment. May will drift forward on occasion, depending on match-ups etc.

There is a space for someone to be discovered.

Genuinely, I think they'll try and rejig that around him. In any case, my best bet is that he will stop the sooking too now that he's got his move home and he's through most of his recent issues.

I could be wrong of course, but that's my gut feel at this stage.
