Do you think we'll still go with the Co-Captaincy in 2019?

Jonesy doesn't seem so convincing in this article.

It will just be Viney.

Ascension is a normal developmental phase. One Captain.

Jones will at times this year struggle to play 4 Quarters at top level.

It started last season. There were 2-3 games last year where he was just plodding.

There is so much emotion on Facebook today That Jones must be Captain and deserves to hold a Cup, so he must remain

This Club is over all that i hope

Jones will be Captain only if he is able to play 4 Quarters of Top line Senior Footy  at a cracking level. Emotions about Bleeding Red and Blue and being Heart and Soul are completely irrelevant

I think Viney needs to get a solid season out on the park before you'd give him the nod as a sole captain.

Missed a fair chunk of last year.

Jones may only have another year left in him. Maybe two. No need to rip the captaincy from him.

Viney's isn't out of the woods yet with that foot. Let's see how he goes with consistently getting out on the park.

If they are going to take the captaincy away from Jones then I suggest going the co-captain route again and give it to some one with a good track record of playing most of the games.

Viney & Gawn I'm tipping.

Interesting...from what Goodwin said on the radio the other day, it seemed that it would be retained. He didnt necessarily say who tho.

I know this is all team-speak but I expect more fighting spirit from Jonesy. A bit more Alpha-male to keep the captaincy.

Agreed.

Leave it be for this season.

Review at season end.

To be successful, clubs need to make hard decisions but also behave in a respectful and decent way, understanding the importance of each individual contribution. Jones contribution has been significant. His performance off-field has greatly improved. He is good for marketing and improves the image of the club. He brings honesty and respectability to the club. He has history and a record of loyalty and achievement

He stands for the Club.

He bleeds for the Club.

Bit like Smithy's famous comment..."Tony, I am Melbourne"

Jones will play this season and play in the 22.

We are a young team with a very young co-captain.

Dumping Jones this season, serves no purpose, no purpose at all.

Although different circumstances, I hope we have learnt the lessons of James McDonald.

Jones is Melbourne and deserves another year.

Big fan of JV but lets be honest he needs to get himself on the park consistently before he has sole captaincy

For all of Jones's shortcomings (are there aren't many) he is there week in week out flying the flag and has been for many years

My view is you have to be one of the best players to keep the captaincy. Jimmy MacDonalds treatment is a mountain being made out of a molehill. He couldnt run. He didnt show us what for, he had had it.

Im all for Tom MacDonald, Gawn or Viney as captain or co-captain with Jones,  but I wont be upset if the players and coaches decide Nathan should concentrate on his staying in the ones. If there is a view Jack V wont play most games, that's a shame as he is terrific and truly leads by example. That leaves Gawny and Tom as probably the best options as captain of the MFC since Robbie. Personally I love Toms actions and words but would be rapt if either of them ran out first.

There were quite few that Viney didn’t play too. His foot gives him a lot of trouble.

If the powers that be decide that Jones is not the best person to be captain, I'll be disappointed but so be it if it brings us closer to a premiership. There is no way he won't be firmly in best 22 at year end, even though this seems to be the prevailing view around here.

That said, I firmly disagree that Viney, either outright or as co-captain, is the answer. The guy has barely played in the past year and a half, and should be allowed to get his body right. We know he'll lead with a title or without, but it is more important that he is playing at the highest level possible.

If Gawn or McDonald are added to the mix, that is fine with me.

Age always wins the battle

Viney is still a young dog

I'm definately in the Viney solo captain group.  Jones is a MFC legend but Viney is our true inspiration and leader. I'm confident he will play a full season

1. I don't think Viney is ready to take it on solo just yet but I do think he'll be ready to do that in the next future, probably next year.

2. I don't think Jones really should keep it. Relieving the pressure of extra duties/responsibilities should prolong his career.

3.. I'm not sure Tommy Mc or Gawn should be elevated to co-captain if it's only going to be for a year.

Pretty much if you put that all together it might be Jones and Viney again this year. Or it might be Gawn/T Mc and Viney. Or it might be Viney with Gawn and T Mc as vice captains.

Also shouldn't be Tom McDonald if he's off to Jordan Peterson. That's a worry.

Surely if Jones may have trouble making it on the park each week for 4 quarters then co-captain with Viney makes sense. Only if he personally wants to step down then I would consider it

Gawn VC for when both captains are unavailable, he steps up.

I often think of Richie Van den Berg who from memory had the Dorks captaincy taken off him the year they won their 07 flag.  A club campaigner who did not quite make it to the promised land.

Hawks won the flag in 2008. VandenBerg was captain for 3 years until he retired at the end of 2007.

I'm not sure that a captain of any team aquires the leadership role because he  simply 'deserves' it......It's usually because the players & coaching staff select the candidate & more importantly, he or she is the right person for the job. JV is the obvious choice for me whether he's on the park for 22 games or not, however, my thoughts are co-captains again for this season.

Co captains again. Probably NJ & JV.

Not Viney solo, his fitness is still too uncertain and why unnecessarily snub Jonesey?

TMac and Gawn are probably ready if need be.

JV, Gawn & Nev are so far ahead of any other MFC player when measuring there contribution, impact on a game & traits that a captain   requires.

If I was choosing, it would be JV (c), Gawn & Nev (vc's)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
