I know this is a retro topic but I still haven't got over how they delisted Pedersen but kept Tim Smith on the list.  Pedo was a serial scapegoat & was the first dropped whenever the firsts had a bad game however in every Casey game that I saw Pedo outperformed Smith by a long, long way.

Pedo is also more versatile than Smith.    In the finals Smith looked like someone playing schoolyard footy as he kept trying to take hangers.  His kicking for goal was woeful & he is pretty hopeless in the ruck.

Anyhow its all over now but I reckon it was a shocking decision.

I suppose it comes down to scope for growth and development.

I think with Pedo he got everything out that he had / no more development

But with Smith they must see scope for growth

For mine both pedo and smith dont fit anymore - not big enough to be keys not fast enough or enough tricks for small / medium fwds

Pedo is playing for Phillip Island (Bulldogs) next year. I will definitely be following his progress as I live close to the footy ground. His family has moved there and Pedo and his wife are hopeful of securing teaching positions on the Island.

One of my favourite demons.

Agree. I don't think we would have wanted to be looking for KPF depth in one years time with Pedo retirement. I recall in Neitz last year, he wasn't really able to hold onto many marks and was really doing more work as a bullocking presence, hitting packs hard to bring ball to ground and scaring defenders. Smith can be that type of player with his size, as a last resort/depth

I'm surprised Smith is still on the list. It should be acknowledged, though, that he'd just come back from injury before the Finals. Then again, he gets injured a lot.

Tim Smith didn’t play in any of our finals.

They’ve got a very good coach in Beau Vernon. Took them to the West Gippsland premiership last year, and Leongatha to the flag in the Gippsland League the year prior.

I can't see a single thing in Tim Smith that would warrant him being on an AFL list.

The one thing he was supposed to bring to the AFL table was elite accuracy, but at 4 goals 5 thus far, he couldn't even excel at that.

However, I see a brighter future in our other Smith

I very much liked Pedersen but his mobility wasn't going to improve as he got older, time was up. Keilty now looks set to take that tall utility role.

Someone went off with Bull Smith as the season went on last year, like he lost his confidence in his game. Previously good goal kicking became a horrible stretch of the yips.

Otherwise, he was useful in the games he played at AFL level. His tackle pressure for a tall was excellent and he did the job in the ruck.

He averaged 6 tackles a game and his games against the Blues and Crows - both big blow out wins - were excellent all round games.

Even his Port game rated well. These ratings aren't always worth a lot but they can show players doing important things like applying pressure and tackles or halving contests.

Great restraint to pick a nickname other than the obvious.

It was really more the recruitment of Preuss that sealed Pedo's fate.  His value was as a backup fwd/ruck.  I loved watching The Bear play, his willingness to run in straight lines and crunch packs in the air and on the ground was a pleasure to watch, a point of difference from many currently on our list and the size of his frame was an asset in this regard.  His goal kicking was generally pretty much good, but not quite T Mac level great.  His ball use whether by foot or a clever knock to position was somewhat underrated at times.  There were games (paticularly during 2016) when I thought he should have played over Weid based on actual performance and capability at the time, but that is now water under the bridge and perhaps in retrospect the selection committee were right to get the Weid the exposure at senior level.  On ballance, in retrospect as much as I thought there were big games when Pedo rose to the occasion, I'll accept there were also those where he went missing for too much of the game.

I don't think it was a competition with T Smith, who I think plays a slightly different role.  Though I have found T Smith somewhat underwhelming, I think he does compete hard and as Spencer somewhat points out he plays a role the coaches ask of him when he plays.

I am somewhat surprised that someone like Gold Coast didn't chase the Bear, because I thought he could have been of value to them for a year, but I guess it might not have suited Pedo at this point in his life to be moving half way across the country on a short term prospect either and I heard that GC were chasing local boy big Jake 'Pencil' Spencer for ruck depth  (don't know how that worked out).  In the end as a fringe player, I think age became Pedersen's enemy at the MFC, but I think he seemed to accept his predicament with great grace and I wish him all the best for the future.

Pedo had plenty of chances to impress but overall couldn't cut the mustard. I find in interesting at 193 cm he was suppose to be a backup ruckman. I would still rate Pedo above T.Smith but age( less than ) is on the side of Tim and the fact Tim didn't get upgraded to the seniors was interesting more like expected.

Possibly agree about fit, for these current (very current) times about Pedo's role. However, I loved the way he played footy, could recover and perhaps win games for us, would protect the smalls and take those inspirational marks at unexpected moments which nearly always benefited the team, the teammates about him and the scoreline. Very sadly, he missed - at the selection table - many, many games as a scapegoat player in the eyes of the FD, mostly unjustified. His versatility in several roles  was immediately missed as a result. He was such a good Clubman for the MFC that he held no apparent grudges for this treatment; always there, encouraging more youthful players and selected teams returning to the Clubrooms at half-time, during the half-time break and after the game. Always a face of positivism for the MFC and an excellent team presence demeanour.

that's gold theo, I get to half a dozen games a year as we have a house at Ventnor and my old man was a trainer/physio for many years.

look forward to pedo playing hopefully in back to back flag team.

IMO it was no coincidence that for years we almost always lost when Peder was not playing, yet so often won when he was playing!

Not a big star but he did things people don’t notice, and he had as good a “team first” attitude as anyone ever, which is contagous so really helps the scoreboard.

IMHO Peder should have always been our #1 CHF ahead of that very nice and intelligent chap reputed to have concrete hands.

Peder seems to have been underapreciated and underused yet had a lovely attitude throughout so one can easily feel gratitude and many best wishes for his future.  Thanks man.

Didn't Pedo just retire. T Smith is a few years younger so I fail to see where the shocking decision was with Pedo going.

My understanding was he was happy to play another year if the club wanted him to, but was also comfortable to get started on his post AFL life.

The club didn’t want him to go again, so he retired. Not a genuine retirement where the player has had enough, but not pushed out against his will either. Somewhere in the middle.

And yes, he wasn’t “one of the boys” in the eyes of the footy department and therefore was always a mediocre game away from being dropped.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
