Careful.

You're not allowed to bag Pert around here.

They'll all tell you it's a complete coincidence and a freak occurrence that we're 3-7 with almost the worst percentage in the league and 90% of the list going backwards., in the time he's come on board.

Of course it is, BBP. Absolute coincidence and that is what is so fascinating. Don't you think? No-one can accuse our beloved Gary at this crisis point.

Players coming back from off season surgery moving from preseason mode to inseason matchplay mode before they'd attained required fitness base an issue. Tommy Mac a prime example. Had surgery on both ankles yet was back playing in JLT1 where it was obvious that he was well below his previous fitness levels. He should  have stayed in preseason mode putting miles in the legs till he got close to his previous fitness levels.  Jack Viney another. Coming off 2 seasons ruined by foot injury he played one Casey praccy match and then straight in for round 1 where his lack of conditioning and match  fitness was obvious.

What did Petracca have that limited his pre-season? I dont recall him being out for extended time or in for surgery?

One thing I do know, that is that when we finally find out what is going on with injuries and their mis-handling, it will start with the preamble from the coach or Pert that:  "we all know that... blah blah blah", as if we have known for some time what the F is going on. This is aimed at limiting reaction and gives me the tom [censored].

This.

In the Wagner's, Lockhardt, Spargo, possibly Stretch, and possibly Smith we have five players who are good VFL players who would not be in the team if we had even a third of our injury list available.

Add players like Lewis, Petty (who may not be ready) and Garlett who would not be selected due to form if others were available and that is closing on half a starting 22 who should  be playing VFL.

That is a bridge too far, pure and simple.

I just find it ridiculous that so many that people, including people paid to comment on football, don't understand this is the reason we are not winning games of AFL football.

One reason is so many footy media people are ex players and the culture of not blaming injury for poor performance is hard wired in of the DNA of football clubs and footy culture more broadly. Stoopid is as Stoopid does.

Has always amused me how, in AFL world you can't give the perfectly reasonable explanation of a massive injury list for poor form. You're just making excuses

He had a knee operation after last season

I am amused that you used some rhyming slang for the last two words of your post to avoid using a known swear word only to have the auto-censor decide that the cleaned-up version doesn't meet its definition of an appropriate community standard anyway.

Im flummoxed that journos who can find the most insignificant molehills to explore, havent drilled into this yet.

Because there's nothing to drill into. "Injuries take the time they take to heal" isn't exactly major clickbait.

Interesting thing " appropriate community standard" LDC.

Really depends on what community you happen to be in to a large extent.

I am not big on censorship, the biggest problem is it usually depends on the sensor and we all know that can mean varying levels   however I am happy with the general  level on Demonland.

Pretty sure Tom McDonald had the ankles done a couple of years ago and did a solid preseason this year up until developing some knee tendinitis late in preseason.

It sounds like McDonald as well as May and Joel Smith have actually been victim of training too hard.

Oliver, Hunt and Harmes all had shoulder surgeries and were ready to go. As were Jetta and Vanders who's injuries weren't related to their shoulder ops or rehab time as far as I can tell.

Petracca recovered well enough from a knee procedure, as did Marty Hore from an ankle.

Viney and Jones probably shouldn't have played round 1. More faith should've been shown in fringe guys like Stretch who were ready to go. They decided an underdone Viney was more valuable than a fit Stretch. Given Viney got through without injury I can't argue it was the wrong fitness decision, just a bad football one.

The majority of our ills go back to the fact that around 13 of the players that played in the Prelim had post season surgery.

Thus giving us a clear run at a strong pre-season come November to set us up for a serious tilt at 2020.

My thoughts exactly LDC.

Well no, but a very lucid explanation of the unintended consequence of my post. Extremely well written.

It's weird and my feeling is it a footy thing. Maybe rugby too?

Certainly not the case in cricket. As an example once Smith and Warner went out expectations went through the floor.

My sense is it doesn't happen in NFL or NBA though stand to be corrected as I don't follow either closely. Not sure about top level soccer.

I wonder if it is partly stems from how many players play the game. Most team sports are dependent on key players to score (e.g. striker, quarter back, point guard). Footy is higher scoring, with a bigger spread of scorers and with 22 players each player is not as influential as sports with half that or less on the pitch, court etc

Cheers DZ - frustrating numbers.

Poor  Vanders ....tough run with injuries.

Would love to have him and a few other hardnuts like him so they can go into bat for Max when he was flat on his back.

I blame Pert for us not getting the Old Olympic swimming centre as our baby.

His pertinence,  is just a bridge too far,  for me.

He's to blame,  for us not having a Home Base...  and he's been sent to us,  as his Penance.

That's an intense argument,  'BM'r.

Really does offer some insight into what's happened this year. While other teams have been hit with injuries, and the Tigers, Collingwood etc. are mentioned as covering their injuries fairly well, we are not only missing best 22 but also those fringe 22 guys who would replace them. The thought that you need at least 30 good AFL players on a list is right, but they need to be ready to play, we've had 6/7 at VFL level for a while and really some of those are 1st year players who shouldn't in normal circumstances get close to a game.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
