We will have more night games for sure. I was expecting to play another top eight side. That’s all. I can express an opinion, your entitled not to agree with it.

Also I might add that as I am getting older I would prefer day games any day of the week.

    This year bought hope along with it expectation. Mine was, round one versus another 2018 top eight team. We didn’t get it I move on.

    I agree with you. I think this was an opportunity for the AFL to showcase an up and coming powerhouse and they've fluffed it.

    Wasn't the talk that Pies wanted us in round one? They can see what's happening and wanted in. Instead they've given them the Cats and we've all but missed out. The Pies will make money from their home game, will we?

    This is the biggest downside to me.  The MFC needs to capitalise financialy during any period of sucess and gate takings are one good revenue stream.  A game against practically any Victorian team would draw a much better crowd than Port.  Yes we get to play other Victorian teams over the course of the season, but generally Rd 1 draws a bigger crowd in it's own right.

    MFC supporters need to get to this game on mass and create a cauldron like atmosphere, to make sure we get half a dozen cheap free kicks like Port did at their dung heap this season , just to make well and truly sure we get over the line.

    Get the win and hopefully we build the crowds throughout the season.

    Last year it was October 31, about a week after they announced the round 1 fixture.

    We would have likely scored Port at the MCG at some point anyway but it's still not ideal. Geelong on a friday night at the MCG....YAAAAAAWN. Not great scheduling.

    And then Bulldogs v Sydney as the primetime game on the Saturday night? GIVE ME A BREAK!

    Regardless, I think we'll get 50k in round 1.

    Port is not a good start to the season financially.  We will probably lose money or barely break even.

    Last year the majority of our Home games at the G were against i/state teams or small Vic teams both of which are terrible for our Revenue.  Add to that our two Home games in NT and our revenue from Home games becomes rather meagre.  In 2019 we will be relying on the QB vs Coll games to top up the coffers (ANZAC Eve is Away). 

    Oh, and please no more gifting Carlton and Essendon 4 - 6 Home games each at the G.  It is not their home ground.  Let them play at Marvel!!

    I'm not so sure it will.  Remember we are now out of pokies so that revenue is gone. 

    Sure, winning games will bring out our demon fans but not i/state fans and we need big crowds to boost revenue and to keep Home games at the G which means a decent number of opposition fans.   

    Home games vs Port, GWS, GCS, Freo, StK, North, Syd, Brisb just aren't going to fill the seats and help us financially (and fund things like new facilities).  We have now earnt the right to get a decent fixture that will help us financially and our Home game opponents is a key part of that.

    The Easter/ANZAC fixturing will be interesting to see which of the 4 ANZAC game teams get advantaged.  Ess have pushed for a new time slot - Good Friday Eve game vs Carlton.  So Ess will have the biggest advantage over that period.  As we play them after ANZAC Eve I'm preparing for disappointing news on length of our breaks between games.   Hopefully, we play Easter Saturday afternoon.

    It could be just me but it doesn’t seem an exciting opening round overall for the neutral unless Dylan Shiel receives a hostile reception at Spotless, highly doubtful though. 

    Was hoping for a ‘bigger’ opener for us, oh well. Welcome back Jack(s).

    As usual Collingwood don’t have to play Geelong in Geelong. Yes, the rationale would be that the crowd will be bigger at the MCG (ie financial). By that logic, Collingwood should play every game at the MCG.

    Crazy talk. To lose money on an MCG home game you need a sub-23k crowd. We'll get 45k-50k imo.

    The annoying thing is we will have two days less turnaround over the first 4 weeks than Richmond before ANZAC eve.  We’ll have 3 6 day breaks, Richmond 1.  Same re Collingwood and Essendon. No surprise to see the AFL favour Richmond and Collingwood there.... They know revenue will be great if they have good seasons...

    Well we won't be getting an 80,000+ crowd for the season opener although we at least aren't playing away from home.  We might get 35k up to 50k to the Port opener however on the back of winning 2 of 3 finals in the just completed season. 

    Hopefully we get a couple of decent blockbuster home games before the QB clash ... it should be noted that we will be the away team next season in the ANZAC eve game against Richmond.

    Our crowds should generally be on the improve as long as we maintain our winning form so our financial concerns have dissipated somewhat anyway in that regard. 

    What we do need is a big spike in prime-time games on free-to-air TV ... which is related to the potential sponsorship dollars moving forward.  We are now ready for the big stage but we're fighting against the endemic thinking that rewards the Victorian clubs with huge memberships  and extra-large supporter numbers.

    Im happy with this, Saturday afternoon at the G. Id rather play at home than away. We will get a good crowd because we are coming off a great season with some standout finals wins, there will be expectations and I want to see how our new recruits go.

    35-40k is the likely crowd unless we can get some hype around the game.

    Port supporters aren't known for travelling and the MCC/AFL theatre goers will have better MCG games to attend on the Thursday and Friday night.

    The  last round game against GWS is perhaps a good pointer.... 37k

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • NON-MFC: Round 08

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
