If he goes I won’t begrudge him, but he damn well owes us the decency of ensuring we get dually conpensated. We picked this guy up as a mature age out of Ainslie and gave him a shot at AFL football. We kept him around for 2 years while injured. If he were to walk away and go to a club and we got say pick 56 I’d be rightly annoyed 

Is the family business in Ainslie or Sydney? If it's in Canberra I can't imagine how moving to Sydney would make it any easier to manage compared to Melbourne.

big loss. We lose size and hardness around the contest and another tall target up front. I expect him to have a big year next year

Being off the park for nearly 2 seasons it is tough to rate him after only a handful of games back. Can he become a more refined and accomplished player and what do the Swans see in him? Is it them chasing him or mutual attraction? I suspect they are mainly interested in his toughness and he did kick three goals against them recently amongst some good contested footy. And life may be be easier for him up north. Sad he may want to leave after the clubs patience during his long injury breaks and then quickly cementing a regular spot on his return.

Would be a decent loss.Very hard match up. Big, plays tall up forward ,strong, tough, tackles and does all the hard stuff including turning up to a preliminary final.

We get left with little kids  who can’t stick a tackle  and don’t risk their bodies like Hannan, Spargo, JKH.

Its interesting to note the improvement in our side later in the year with him in it.

Who would you rather have in your side.

Surely the club has some contacts in the financial sector that could assist the VdBergs in selling up their business for a tidy sum and living off the invested  proceeds. Sucks losing him and Kent in the same off season.

This is crazy...  I mean completely crazy

Family comes first, and this isn't a case of a 21yo chasing a million dollar pay day. He has a fair reason to weigh up his options.

Support his decision either way.

Nothing against Vanders leaving, i'll never be mad at a player leaving for family reasons. However, when you look at the fact that Vince and Pedo are retiring. King and Filipovic are delisted. Kent, and potentially Hogan, Tyson and Vanders are looking to leave we all of a sudden have a massive hole in our squad. We'll get the picks back to cover it but [censored] man either way we are getting 4 or 5 kids ontop of the kids we already have. Our best 22 and the 6 or 7 fringe players who are ready to play seniors are going to have an easy ride if they stay fit.

AVB is surely going to have to live in a capital city for training and travelling interstate.

I wasn’t sold on him as part of our best 22 but his return changed my mind. There’s no one else in the team that has the upper body strength to push off opponents like Vanders and he seems to add an extra dimension in the midfield/forward role. 

He isn’t fast but I really enjoyed the games he played this year and touch wood he appears to be past his foot problems. 

However the personal side of things might just weigh things over for him, I actually didn’t realise he had dealt with the sudden passing of his father. 

Mid he goes hopefully we’ve been able to get some value from his end of year.

I get why he may need to move but I want him to stay big bodied hard at it , needs to improve his kicking and it’s likely he will .

People keep saying "he's not fast".

His pace is one of his assets.

Yes the way things are unfolding you would think we had a bad year. We will have to get into trading picks for experienced players big time. No use going to the draft with 7 or 8 picks for 18 year olds. 

Better team over the last 4 or 5 weeks of the season with him in the side - if he could stay fit extremely valuable and far less likely to be brushed aside in the heat of a final or not commit 100% to each contest

Very sad to see him leave if that's the way it plays out 

Still a few too many soft underbellies imo we can ill afford to lose someone like AVB

I'm a huge fan, I think his grunt and attitude flows through the rest of the team and that's the style we want to play. So I really want to keep him, but I also think there's a point where the contract becomes too risky or silly even if the draft return from Sydney isn't great. And that's without factoring in Aaron's actual preference even if money isn't a factor.

I would hope if the money isn't a factor we can win him over with other ways to support him - extra time off, business mentoring etc. The Swans drafted Ollie Florent after his father passed away when the family didn't want him leaving Melbourne. They met with the family pre draft and worked out what was required to make it work. Hopefully that's the kind of thing we are doing with Vanders. 

The money has to have a max limit otherwise you're costing yourself future players if he doesn't perform to value.

Melksham and Petracca are already preferred as the medium forwards. Hannan can probably fill that role as well. Petracca can build his fitness and play the forward/midfield hybrid role that Vanders is best suited to.

So we find some wingmen to cover his potential in that area of the ground as well which isn't easily but maybe Stretch, Baker, Fritsch and bring in Kade Kolo plus more draft/trades.

Took forever to get the midgits  who get knocked aside by mobs like Hawthorn, WCE , Sydney  off our list, looks like we can’t help ourselves,  filling up again. Garlett, ( Gone, but still contracted) Johnston, ( ?) Spargo, Jones ( just about gone) and the young prospect coming. 

Under 185 you need  speed, heaps of tricks and 2 goals min a week IMO

Kent and AVB decent losses. At first pass doesn’t look great to me, however we’ve seen Taylor magic before.
