Round 4

it was the darkest day of the year

5 goals to 2. Demons led at 25 minute mark of Q1.

End 6 goals to 18.  Hawks got 16 out of last 17 goals.

What happened?

1- hawks pressure led to panic

2- fumbles v clear handling (especially in the wet after half time)

3- danger men - Gunston, Roughead, Breust, Shiels, Omeara, Smith , Puopolo (Mitchell was held but is always dangerous).

4- Clarkson held a player behind the play and a mini flood of our running game. Aka Richmond style. They counter attacked perfectly.  (We cannot get exposed again and clangers will kill us)

5- kicking for goal. We missed set shots but they nailed everything

we are a better team now. Bring on Friday night.

From memory, they killed us on the outside. We all got sucked into the contest and the likes of Impy, Shiels, O'Meara slaughtered us. Then we gave up. Didn't help that Bugg kicked 0.4 either!

Don't worry, we have Vandenberg back now. Their outside runners can run all day long........into the Vandenberg brick wall!!

His physicality is a real weapon for us. Having Vandenberg and Viney around contests is huge for us. It would be scary playing against those guys. That alone puts doubt in the mind of the opposition.

A timely reminder... to show we have  a lot of unfurnished business.

I described the third quarter at the time as like a scene from Custer’s last stand, with Max and a few mids trapped in the centre of a swarm of yellow and brown Indians!

or Harmes 2.0

Brayshaw also another with a massive upgrade since then.

Viney, Tyson, Vandenberg & little Spargo didnt play either

Tagging Mitchell meant we had very few ball winners in the middle.

Petracca spent a lot of time in the middle and this was before the second coming of Harmes and Brayshaw.

And this is the beauty of Harmes' rise. It enables Viney to play see ball, get ball and Harmes to tag Mitchell.

Our midfield should murder them. I'm worried about their cleverness around the ground though and being outcoached by arguably the greatest coach of all time. But there's no doubt this Hawthorn side is the weakest top 8 Hawthorn side under Clarkson, so they are certainly gettable. I'll be fascinated to see how our press works.

True, but I don’t resonate with sensationalistic invitations - our hearts were challenged enough

Accurate as you are...

This game was before Lever had settled, before Viney and T. Mac returned, before Harmes and Brayshaw hit form and before we changed our system to be a bit more solid and not allow the easy out balls.

We'll win if we make it ugly and take our chances. Hawks, just like the cats are still a team with champions in them. They'll punish us if we don't play 4qtrs.

vs Hawthorn Round 4:

Players:

  • In:  TMac, Viney, Tyson, Vandenberg, Weideman, Spargo
  • Out: Lever, Vince, Hogan, Bugg, Garlett, Kent, Wagner

Game Plan/Tactics

  • Players were played out of their normal position eg Salem in the middle;  and in the name of flexibility mids became forwards and forwards became mids.  They looked like Brown's cows and were getting in each others way.  Now players are in their best position making the most of their strengths.  Forwards are forwards and mids are mids.  Forwards have developed their craft and work as a cohesive unit rather than confused individuals.
  • We had no midfield that day:  Jones tagged Mitchell all day which took him out of the game.  Without Viney and Tyson we had no real grunt.  It was Gus' first game so it was pretty much Oliver playing a lone hand.  Now we have a master tagger who also gets plenty of the ball: Harmes.  And our midfield is close to the best in the league.
  • Then we had players off the back of the square.  For the last month we have played mainly 6 x 6 x 6 and we no longer allow them a spare in defence
  • Then we played a very high press and left their fwds behind us with lots of easy goals out the back.  Now it is much more man on man and we stay behind their forwards and/or keep a sweeper down back.

Other

  • More belief and confidence in themselves and each other.
  • Players and coaches have developed with 6 months experience.
  • Much more team oriented
  • Our tackling has become ferocious.

Lots and lots of reasons for optimism folks!  We simply aren't the same team.

The Semi will be very different to that game!   I reckon for the first time in many a year the Hawks will genuinely fear us.  If not it will be at their peril.

Absolutely. Why dredge this up now?  Cannot believe some “supporters”.

As long as our defensive transition holds up we will win this.

When we got the ball it was a slippery piece of soap....when they got it, it was dry weather skills. To a man we fumbled the wet ball while hawthorn played as if it was a dry day is what the memory of that game was.  Just one of those games...

Yep.  Even last time we dominated inside 50s in the first half but couldn’t convert and couldn’t hold the ball in, and every time it went down their end they kicked a goal.  We should have been 10 goals in front at half time!  Our mids are so much better both ways at the moment. Stop the defensive transition and I think we can win by 10 goals.

As one eloquent Demonlander recently said " Hawthorn is like the turd you can't flush"

Let's flush them this time.

Pretty much spot on...
