He wasn't. He was reportedly walking.

He walked a few laps and jogged a few laps.

Max had his calf taped during the game, but did also return to the field. Can't imagine too much is wrong.

Read Jane02's comment on page 1 her source is impeccable, Max injured his calf last Sunday. Someone also posted a Jan Phelan tewwet which also mentioned a sore calf so her source is pretty good too. Cannot say more

I read those posts, but you are saying it's definite so why?

Jane told me and her source, very close to the horses mouth and 100% credable. Max doing everything possible to get himself up for the game.

Not sure why all the doubt. Goodwin is generally open and honest about injuries. Gawn plays and we win by 19 points!

The light/no workload lends credence to this.

Fitness isn't going to be an issue by not training for the week.

TBH he probably should have been rested against the Suns.

I'm leaning towards recruiting a back up ruckman simply to give Max a strategic rest. If we are going to feature in September action over the next few years it is a bit unrealistic to expect Max to play 26 games straight with guys constantly jumping into your body.

Have never been a ruckman but I expect it is a physically "painful pursuit".

If they strapped it on the weekend and put him back on, then there is 0% chance it was a strain. This really only leaves a cork, albeit possibly a bad one.

Bad or not, if its a knock/cork then he is zero risk of not playing this weekend. Its really only then about managing discomfort.

Yeah there was footage of his right calf getting some attention on the bench on Sunday. He's tough. He's fit. If it was really crook he wouldn't be jogging.

Funny i noticed the new strapping on Gawn's calf at the game and watching hte replays again, his decreased ruck output (suns ruckman had more hitouts; which i found really odd) and that Gawn wasn't really rucking any contests inside our 50 (McDonald/Hogan did most).

I presumed that this all meant that the coaches had decided to give him a lighter game load as we were playing the suns and i was thinking how smart we were (and how selfless Gawn was with the possibility of a brownlow etc.). But with this news i see that this was not the case. Hopefully it is more of a corkie than a minor strain and can be overcome. :)

No chance if he had a niggle last weekend, that they A- play him or B- continue to play him.

We won by 96 points. Game was over at quarter time.

If he ran out the game, it mustn't be that serious, unless of course it got worst towards the end of the match or during the week.

Fingers, toes, legs and arms crossed he is OK to go for the rest of the year. It would be a disaster if he breaks down now. We absolutely can't afford that.

.... Gawn walking laps is still more training than Buddy has managed this year apparently!

If he walked for 21 minutes, it would be apparently.

Unless he didn't speak up or thought he could jog it out. Not saying that's what happened but it's possible.

That's my read.

There is no dispute that he got hurt on Sat. They strapped his calf. But he went back on, which would not have happened if it was a strain or tear.

A solid kick to the calf i suspect, which is entirely consistent with the fact he is both on light duties and that he jogged/walked laps at training. It is also consistent with the reliable information provided by Jane02 and Jane Phealn in her tweet.

Before Sunday?  Well, given some other bright spark commented that the Milkshake will be available for Sydney this weekend, I don't see why not...

I know his twin brother has got a limp.........

....leave it alone.

I would have thought Ruckmen have sore calfs every week. With all that jumping and crashing into an opponent all day.

Big Max will wear Jimmy’s number on sunday

Sounds like a corky, ice early in the week, massage it out later in the week, what's the problem.

If Gawny's calf was sore going in why wasnt he rested after half time?

If this is the case and he has aggravated it further, it is very irresponsible player management from the MFC.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
