I think a Collingwood and WC win is a positive result for us. I understand that if we keep winning every other team around us becomes irrelevant for us to make the 8 but let’s face it, it’s unlikely to happen given the stage of where we’re at.

Its teams like North and The poos and wees that I’m most worried about. I just had a look at the draw for those teams and they have a dream run. The teams from 2nd down literally all play each other. Port and collingwood are no certainty to make the top 4. Sydneyand WC could still miss. Those 4 teams have a very difficult draw to finish off the season.

We could still finish second or even 10th. Beat the doggies and head to Geelong with our tails up, then we can date to dream.

Port, Collingwood, Geelong, WC and Sydney are gettable with the team we played with last night. I still believe on the G we need Jayden Hunt in the Team rotating from HB to a Wing to break lines when back from injury.

That's Essendon done now we need WC to do the right thing.

Losing to the saints means we have to beat doggies and Geelong down there to even contemplate top 4. But we have to fix up our issues with the G if we are to be legit which is speed and spread. Jayden Hunt is the Wildcard speed kills and we brought some back in with the likes or Frost, Stretchy, Garlett and Spargs.

Yeah I know. I’m still filthy about that. It could be the loss we had to have. The reviews from that game sounded pretty confronting going by what Lewis said during the week.

But going by the ladder at the moment and the upcoming fixture still could mean we can still make the top 4. Beating the doggies next week and then heading to GMHBA stadium full of confidence and a ground that suits our style will be a great start.

Why is it that collingwood has been in multiple grand finals and is now high on the ladder and has won two premierships since 1964 and we have been and are useless?????

I was torn listening to the Filth/Drug Cheats match. It's a bit like the quandary "would I rather contract typhoid or cholera?"

On balance I was barracking for the drug cheats.

Which simply confirmed the depth of my hatred for the filth.

Umpire directive. Fix game for GWS.

Obviously the fear for their lives of allowing visitors to win in Perth overrides any AFL directive. The last five minutes is just so typical of gutless umpiring in Perth ( and Adelaide)

Slightly off discussion is it me or is Mason Cox becoming arrogant? Oh and when the pies fans sing USA, god they Sh@t me

Worst bit was he was absolutely useless yesterday until one fourth quarter mark (barely took it) and goal.

The MCC/MFC Board sacked Norm Smith in 1965 as Coach

Norm was not amused

If you read all that's been written about Norm, the Committee and the Club, the wheels started to fall off from early to mid 60s.

Our GF win in 64 masked the problems.

We had an aging list with many of our great players retiring.

Our recruiting was not up to scratch and the club became complacent.

Lots of other clubs started to splash money on young recruits and we lost our allure. The Committee refused to follow suit and we lost out on the dash for cash. Recruits were no longer enticed by the great club or playing and training on the MCG.

Also, I seem to remember that the VFL introduced zoning or certainly changed the zoning rules, and these changes had an impact on Melbourne's ability the recruit the best young players.

Norm warned the Committee about what was happening and what would happen if we refused to spend money to entice recruits. The Committee refused.

The relationship between Norm and the Committee had always been strained but success masked the bitterness and anger between coach and certain committee members. The committee was split and Norm insisted that things be done his way.

So our player talent pool dried up and off field, the Club was divided and unworkable.

It all culminated in Norms sacking, reinstatement and then subsequent retirement.  By all accounts Norm's health had started to decline at this time. He was by accounts very difficult to deal with. He became very cranky with club officials and even with players. He had lost his magic wand.

The happy days had ended and there was no return to the grand old days as clubs like Richmond, Geelong, Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood and later North started to emerge as cashed up and powerful clubs with powerful teams.

Others may have different thoughts and understanding but that's my recollection.

I'm glad others are starting to catch on to what is happening with the umpiring league wide, I'll leave it at it.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
