Are you saying he had no forward defensive work? Gee we have plenty of that with the current forward crew. Garlett or Spargo at least provide some crumming ability up forward. They will stay down looking for the spilled ball and be in a position to lay a tackle on the rebounding opposition backman as opposed to our current flying squadron who have all leapt and spoiled each other and ended on lying on the ground while the opposition defenders run the ball out up the Members wing, time and time again!!!

Darwin is not the game for bean pole rucks...   rest Maxy, so he is fresh for the following matches.

# this time last year, was the mistakes we made in selection re Max.   Bringing him back too soon, and playing him in Darwin.

What the hell does it matter? We can go through possible selections till we are blue in the face it’s either not going to be who we need or it’s not going to make the other 22 players do their job.

I’ll revisit this in a few days but right now I’m way too peeved to even think about it.

Out:   Petty- Had a taste and knows what he might need at AFL level.
          ANB- Lacking consistency, no great games.
          Hannan- No impact to the game.

In:      Keilty- Give him a try, big bodied and does the basics.
          Baker- Smart player, runs well and wants it.
          Spargo- Hard worker, crumber.

Move Joel from the backline put Keilty there. Spargo into the foward line for pressure acts and he can create space. Play Baker off the half back for the run and carry, creativity and to close down other speedsters.

I'd have no problem playing four or five at Casey next week for the purpose of avoiding Darwin. As you say every game is a must win and we need to look towards the remainder of the season.

If we cannot beat Freo with a few players out we are stuffed anyway which after today is probably right.

Lets see if Goody’s presser was blah blah.  If it was, no change.  If he is serious, then I can see several changes.  Any player that either can’t run two ways is out.  Any player who is down on form is out (if there is a replacement at Casey).  We have to structure up better.

Out:  Petty, Hannan, Tyson, ANB

In:  Frost, Baker, Spargo, Stretch

Spargo into the forward line, Baker to hold a wing, Stretch on the other (rotating in to the middle)

Hogan CHF, TMac FF.  They dont go past the middle.  

We have to hold our shape in the back 6 much better.

The congestion has caused this, not the new clubs.

Tyson will be handy inside in the Humid slippery conditions, while we rest Petracca from the same.  his pace won't be an issue playing as an inside Mid.

Petracca will be fresh for the game following Darwin, when we need him, as would Maxy.

Petracca isn't quick, and we need quick runners in Darwin.

 

We'll be needing fresh players, for after the Darwin match, to help us settle.

Personally I think its got to do with the new clubs, kids playing other sports and the need for recruiters to recruit robots. There's very little personality left in the game. They're micro managed, can't imagine wanting to be in that environment. Talking to a young kid the other day who plays for the Northern Knights I think. He can't see the benefit of taking the next step, too much required of him, he says he's not alone . Now I'm sure there's plenty who are but have we killed half the fun?

I was of the opinion that Frost played reasonably well once included in 2017.

Until Darwin. Where he had a shocker - and faded out for the remainder of the year. 

Not sure if was the conditions for his poor outing - but I do recall a number of crucial fumbles.

I agree that the game in its professional state has started going backwards as an appeal to the community.

I agree with you about the workloads and the robot factor.

 

The game as I said a few years back, has lost its "fun". 

Starting with the tosssser Ex players taking over the media box commentary.  and talking about the clubs themselves, and everything else,,,  accept calling the game as it stands...  the players names, whether a handball or kick (description), where to,,, who flies for the mark.

 

The same happened yesterday with the CH-7 VFL call.  And the robot commentators just wanted to chat and fill every onair-space with the sounds of their voices_

... and to tell the viewers what the game was all about, instead of just calling the bloody players names, and the score, with the occasional exclamation of admiration for efforts over and above.

 

 

The AFL and the TV channels think they have to pump the game up every second,,, and overdo every bloody thing about it, and that in itself is a Major turnoff (think BT last year... wow wowee!).

 

eX player commentaters think they have to talk down to the viewer in some condescending way, telling us how it is all the time; educating us on the finer points of the flood, & of the zones, and the 5 & 3's, or the 5 man defence, and the Elon Musk rocket flying over the Etiwho Stadium at precisely, 3rdQtr, 13th minute, and 14 seconds time.

I think the talent pool is there, but because of the reluctance to draft mature age players, and the way the AFL club's use the reserves as development for draftees, the talent doesn't want to play there. 

The VFL isn't the next best group of players it is full of kids. There are better players in other leagues, who can't get a game at VFL because an 18 year bean pole first year draftee is keeping them out for "development" reasons.

The only way I can see this being fixed is to run a separate AFL reserves comp, and increase the list sizes to 55+ (maybe a primary list of 35 for AFL, and a secondary list of 20 for reserves only).  When drafting, Club's should be able to place a player on either list (with release clauses after x years for draftees who aren't promoted). Club's should then be able to upgrade off their secondary list for long term injuries, and should have first dibs to automatically elevate any secondary list players before the draft. 

 

Basically, by having a smaller primary list you couldn't afford to have lots of undeveloped kids. By having a larger secondary list that was available for upgrade or exclusive draft, out would encourage club's to retain the best tier two talent in the system to fill gaps.

Or we play our Cadets before AFL games, with an age group of 16 - 21 Yrs?

Senior players who are dropped go back to the VFL.

Vince has to come in for Petty. Freo smaller forward line threat.

Spargo for Hannan and to be a genuine crummer deep I50 all night long baby! This should be Garletts position but he ain’t up to it.

Stretch for Tyson. He deserves his chance and needs to be played consistently for the next few games.

Kent is a must selection when he is fit and firing. He makes our forward line much more threatening when he is playing.
