Watts Dropped from Port

Leigh Matthews was a thug. The statue of him outside the MCG should not be there. He broke Neil McMullin’s face in an off the ball punch and many others too. He is the only player to have been charged by the police for punching another person on the football field. He was not a great footballer. He was a lout.

I was sad about his departure and I was also disappointed the way that it happened with him seemingly wanting to stay but us making our minds up. But at the same time I also saw that he represented everything that was wrong with our club in that horrible period.

We wasn’t going to be the difference for us, and while the pick we got was pretty measly Fritch hadn’t been a very worthy pick up and has more miles left in him.

I wish him well, except if he plays against us then I wish him the worst game ever!

We won't be the only other ex demon running around in the sanfl.

Toumpas, Trengove and Barry might all lineup in the 2s, could have four ex Dee's playing together in the sanfl.

Port might need to rename their 2s the Port Casey Demons....

Why would you say anything to him in front of his grandkids. I also think that he committed some questionable acts on the ground and would let him know face to face if I came across him, but not in front of grandkids, no wonder he didn't say anything.

Thousands of kids saw Matthews belt people unconscious over the years, what is the issue if he was told about in front of his grandkids?

Or they want him in against us and this is the wake up call, to play well in the SANFL this week and earn a recall.

Most clubs try and play former players against their old club, because of the added motivation.

And guess who could have played on him. Lever action.

Now we'll have to rely on Joel ? I guess.

I already have FAR more respect for Fritz than I ever have had for watts.  Apart from Watts's first 3 seasons. He just got worse as he matured.

Seems the club made the right call knowing they would target Fritsch who will provided a similar output for much less money. Money ball at its best! Jack who?

I'm already confident that Fritsch does more than Watts could be relied upon to do. Watts had a season where I thought the penny might have dropped, but it was a dead cat bounce.

Fritsch, the 11 game rookie, has a way better output than Watts already.  Beats him easily in just about every statistical category.

Doubles Watts in inside 50's, metres gained, intercept possessions... its a whitewash anyway you slice it.

And they are just the numbers.... they don't show courage and aerial ability.

I think it was a weak thing to do, In my opinion swyl took advantage that he had young children with him and that mathews would probably not retaliate, which he didn't.

I like him because he's a good bloke. Sue me.

I really dislike Leigh Matthews, still, because despite being the best footballer i have ever seen he was a malicious thug whose violence had a disturbing element of premeditation to it.

Unlike some players from his era who 'just snapped' (eg Robbie Muir, Carman) 'Lethal' hit opponents (often behind the play) who were beating him. No better example being the day he king hit Steve Smith at Princess Park after Smith was giving him a bath.

brilliant post.

I had the opportunity to tell Leigh Matthews to his face, that he was a malicious thug and that Stephen Smith still gets headaches

he didn’t say anything... His Grand kids were with him, but to young to understand and i didn’t hold back

Matthews should have done prison time

Correct. Another brilliant post.

Yeah dropped against the Dogs and will come out like a house on fire against us. You honesty think they will keep him out against his former club of 9 years. He's the reason why this game is on a friday night.

There's been some astute observations in this thread . . . but surely this is the funniest.

Matthews was an exceptional footballer but had the worst case of white line fever in history. Some amazing feats on the ground but at what cost? By his own admission he was a pretty strange cat and didn't really have normal relationships off the field either. Football first, daylight second, then family and friends somewhere lower down in the top ten.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
