Couldn't understand the people melting down when he was traded out.  Hes had 1 good season in 9.   No great seasons.  Horrible strike rate.

Wonder if he will come back in to plays us next week? Im not going to stick the boot in as he might come in and kick 5 against us.  This is the MFC, after all.

    Most clubs try and play former players against their old club, because of the added motivation.

    The added motivation can be a 2 way street. Remember Peter Vardy who we got from Adelaide. Very good player. I remember his first game against the crows at Princess Park. He was absolutely dreadful.. I wandered out of that game wondering if he still thaught he was playing with the crows. Some players play well and others don't. I don't think Watts has the motivation anyway. Be interested to see if they pick him next week. I don't think they will.

    Wow. On to the third page now. Can't think of another Melbourne player (even ones still playing for Melbourne) who would get this much comment if he were dropped. Which means as supporters we must have invested a lot of emotion into Jack Watts. I'm sure there's a PhD in this for someone who can work out just why we're still fascinated by "The Jack Watts Story".

    I would hold my breath until the Port Adelaide game. You wouldn't want Watts to come back and kick a bag against us would we?

    Watts has served our club better than most who have been on our list. Agree that the problem is he was pick number 1, rather than 51.

    This pretty much sums it up, the game is To contested now does not suit watts at all, I would not want him playing for us in a final might as well play with 21 players, it’s all in his head though look at Fritsch he is a skinny fella but geez he cracks in

    No PhD required, it's simple. Watts was our Robbie Flower mk II.

    In those dark days of the late 70s/early 80s, when there was nothing to live for, Robbie could always be relied on to bring some magic and breathtaking football ability. The ray of hope, the footballing genius. Something to be proud of.

    However Watts was forever "just about to" deliver the magic. That he could is why he was loved. That he didn't is why he's not.

    It makes sense to drop him.  It's going to be very wet tomorrow night in Adelaide and Watts is literally the worst wet weather player I've ever seen.

    I wish Watts well, he loved the club as much as we all do and fought to stay.  I had hoped that the new environment would work out for him, but to this stage it hasn't.  As posters have mentioned above, he's looked lost on the field in recent weeks and his heart doesn't seem to be in it anymore.  

    For all of his shortcomings as a player, he did play to a much higher standard in his final couple of year for Melbourne and his current form doesn't detract from an excellent 2016 and half of '17.  Unfortunately for him, he's got the skills, but not the personality for professional football and perhaps it's not as easy as 'flicking a switch' to play to the tempo, aggression and desperation of league footy.

    He didn't ask to be drafted pick one, didn't ask to debut Queens Birthday with the 'Welcome number one draft pick Jack Watts!!' blaring over the speakers, didn't ask to play on Glass, Rutten, Merrett and Scarlett in his first 10 games as an 18yo CHF and didn't ask to leave our club when we were at our absolute worst.

     

    He plays for Port Adelaide now anyway...

    Watts gets a hard time because he’s obviously got god given talent that could make him a genuine star of the game. That’s why he gets more heat than Joe Average on the fringe of the side. You can’t use the “only 22 spots in the side” here; if Watts delivered on his talent then he’d still get picked if there was only 5 spots in the side.

    That to me justifies the intrigue around him, but it doesn’t justify why people used to wail and get nasty as if they were personally affronted when Watts was disappointing. For some reason he doesn’t have the drive or competitive edge to really take the bull by the horns. So be it, many don’t.

    I've briefly tuned in to a couple of Port games (just to critique the opposition for the coach.....ahem) and I've noticed #23 from Port make space and find a mismatch time and time again

    No surprise. He was invisible last week.

    Dixon hasn’t been any better though and has kicked less goals. 

    Their only performing forward is Robbie Gray. 

    I’ll be very annoyed if we lose to them next week. Their ball movement is dreadfully slow.

    Since it was asked, I will put my hand up as a Watts fan and constant defender of the critisicm against him. I commented to my son after watching last weeks Port game how little Jack contributed and while I am sorry to see him dropped I am not surprised based on the way he is playing. 

    While Jack was at Melbourne I was happy to defend him and look at the positives and answer some of the vitriol this ssite can pour on our players, especially one who loved the club as much as he did. Players usually don't go out with the intent to play bad games but they may fall short of our lofty expectations. Jack may have gone at pick 1 but he hasn't been able to fullfill the promise we wanted. He is not alone there though as many other number 1 picks have fallen short of expectation.

    I am delighted that his departure allowed Bailey Fritch to join the club and as Jack is no longer a demon he isn't on my radar. It does at this stage validate Goodwin's assessment of where Jack is at with his footy though. Move on and note that 2 of the emergencies are Jack Trengove and Jimmy Toumpas

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
