Gee some on this site must or should be embarrassed with some of their posts on this kid last year.

Thats just this side of Glib if you don't mind umpire...in so much as a lot of criticism leveled against Oscar was quite valid. It was then beholden upon the lad to build and step up. Essentially the onus is on Oscar. By the same measure he has improved, is still improving. He's now actually an OK defender...not brilliant...thats a whole other level.

Hope he continues his progression.

That doesn't discount the validity of some critique last( and previous ) season.

He is far better than ok, but agree not brilliant.

I think he has beaten every opponent this year and very few goals have been scored directly on him.

He doesn’t need to be brilliant, he needs to be a good player in his role within the team. He is doing that at present, would be good to get a bit more on the attacking possessions side of things but that will come with the confidence he can lock down an opponent and then look to take off.

Interetingly on the Dees podcast they discussed him training on our fwds and he said they were, by far, the hardest fwds to mark up on in the league. I'm sure a bit of mayo but a great place for him to learn his craft.

Last year I hated watching OMac play,

this year he deserves his spot playing excellent footy

if he keeps improving at this rate he will be as good as TMac.  Fantastic

BUMP

Three months ago it looked like Oscar would sign before too long.  When Tom signed a month later I again thought Oscar's signature wasn't far behind.

In absence of other info, I'm still fully confident he will sign but it would be nice to get him signed up.

Does anyone have an update?

Edit: Could a mod please add a ? to the title.

It is a strange one.

I wouldn’t thought he would be done by now.

Has Melbourne’s thinking changed with the development of Frost?

Oscar: “We’ve had talks [going] back and forth, and at the moment we’re still talking,” he said...“I’m pretty confident that can happen".

Glad his contract is getting sorted.

Oscar is rapt with his game and with Goodwin:  “In saying that he trusts me to do that role, and he’s identified me as the reliable guy to do that, I take a lot of confidence from that,” Oscar said...I love it.”

With Gus, Tom and Oscar in contract talks it leaves only Nev as the 'must sign'.   Suspect discussions with him are also underway.

Jaheeezus an improved player but don't talk him up as a superstar people!

Have no worries that he'll re-sign this year like his brother did. He seems well entrenched with the young group we have.

His form has dropped off considerably since Lever went down. Just goes to show how important Lever is in terms of leadership and organising our players.

Must have been shortly after this time-frame, when some figures estimates blew out, and the Hannebery talks were put on ice.

I'm guessing that some contracts will be held over, until we workout our recruit signings.

Having read the Hannebery thread I wondered the same thing.

Since the early May article in the op we have signed Tom and Jetta who would have deserved a really decent contract.  I suspect Gus' terrific form and other club interest may have required more from the salary cap to sign him up.

Can easily see those three contracts whittling away the salary cap more than might have been expected.

Hopefully, Oscar's contract isn't one of those held over.

Also, while May is being touted around the place, could be another reason.

I think Dewy will like to rebuild that Suns list with fresh attitudes,,, onto fresh minds,,, that aren't already fatigued of the GCSuns.

I think most leaders up there,,, of the older players, will be tired of all the losing mentality, and wasting their whole careers there.

May is very get-able, and IF we don't,  our direct competitors will !!!

Dr Cool remains in the house!

From the article:

Dr Cool has developed into an integral part of Melbourne’s side, and a mainstay in the team’s backline.

Dr Cool made his AFL debut in round 22, 2015 against Fremantle at Subiaco, which also happened to be Nathan Jones’ 200th AFL game.

The 22-year-old Dr Cool has played the past 40 matches in a row for Melbourne and his form in recent weeks has been another reason for the team’s rise.

One of his most staunch fans, Demonland's binman, had this to say:

Well done Omac. You have been driving the haters mad with your excellence, calmness, decision making and ability to beat the best forwards in the game, week in week out. So much so that the haters are now as rare as a humble Hawks fan.

But beware young man. They are still lurking, waiting for a single error so they can make silly calls like 'lets bring May in' or 'you should be allowed to further develop in the twos now that Frosty has surpassed you'.

Interesting only 2 years. I'd have thought more.

I'd do the same personally if I was a key back still developing. He'll be worth a hell of a lot more in 2 years, trust me. Smart young man/good manager. He'll never leave the Dee's, I wouldn't worry about that.

Agree, 2 seems pretty short

He has already notched up 60 games.

Not many key position players have played that many games at such a young age.

60 of a possible 68 games is impressive.

Nothing to read into this at all, a lot of players only sign 2 year contracts and prior to this year Tmac has only signed 2 years at time, it suits both club and player in a host off ways.

Just let the Weed & Tom carve up Frawley (remember him vaguely?  LOL) and his mates at one end of the ground, while Oscar & Co. build the impregnable wall at the other end!

Well done Oscar!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
