Oscar: “We’ve had talks [going] back and forth, and at the moment we’re still talking,” he said...“I’m pretty confident that can happen".

Glad his contract is getting sorted.

Oscar is rapt with his game and with Goodwin:  “In saying that he trusts me to do that role, and he’s identified me as the reliable guy to do that, I take a lot of confidence from that,” Oscar said...I love it.”

With Gus, Tom and Oscar in contract talks it leaves only Nev as the 'must sign'.   Suspect discussions with him are also underway.

Give him the keys to the place!

We’ll even sign-up his big brother just to keep him happy...

Gee, not so long back there were (quite) a few on here that didn’t want to see him get another game, let alone another contract. Some pounded him mercilessly, you there, Picket and then say they got it wrong, yes you did.

Writing off a young key position player after a handful of games is the dumbest thing you can do in footy.

A lot of people will eat their words about Weideman too.

I still think he has depth-perception issues. Maybe we can shift one on the o's on Ooscar's $50,000 contract offer and he won't pick it up?

Awesome. Get Oscar signed and hopefully that will be a little leverage to get Tom signed!

Last week I may have imagined this but I believed we saw the first good signs of Lever and OMac playing very complimentary sides to their games on Sunday, along with Hibberd being their go - to player in a tight situation.

Time will tell but quietly confident the team has close to a finals standard defence now in the making.

We should have been working on extensions for both Tom and Oscar pre season, but hopefully we can now lock them both away for at least three years, hopefully four.

There were many doubters who have admitted that they were wrong.

There are those that still have some doubts or concerns about aspects of Oscar's game and that is probably fair enough.

However, for the minority who repeatedly criticized or were unduly negative about Oscar (the word Spud comes to mind),  I doubt that there will be any embarrassment. That is the nature of the beast.

Just like the workplace there are the whingers and critics who have little capacity for self reflection or humility.

I think there are a lot of our guys at the moment, who are beginning to emerge and silence their critics.

TMac & OMac provide team flexibility and toughness, I say what ever it takes, keep these two, they are the type that you need when playing finals footy. Stay Tom, Stay Oscar...............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a fan of OMac, and see a very very good key defender in the not too distant future, but "tough"?

Generous.

Agreed.

However, Oscar is one of those players whose improvement and development has been hastened by regular selection. Sure it does not suit everyone, but you cannot underestimate the confidence that flows to a young player who is selected each week without the Sword of Damocles over his head. Alternatively, you cannot underestimate the damage to the confidence of a young player who is selected one or two weeks then dropped, particularly when it happens time after time.

It is matter of judgement based on the perceived potential of a player and what he can bring to the team in the longer term. However, as a fan it is often difficult to discern the difference between one player and the next. Some go on to have great careers, others are sacrificed on the altar of expediency or the judgement of a coach.

Anyway, Oscar has benefited from having the confidence of the coach and selection panel and is repaying that faith in spades this year. Others will be unlucky and will end up playing elsewhere or in a lower league. I often feel sorry for the latter.

Its a little like the older player that loses the confidence of the coach, does not fit into the game plan or is not seen as part of the future yet goes on to play good footy at another club.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
