As stated above, how do we stop Ben Brown this coming weekend? I'm sure the thought has crossed the minds of club staff this week.

Last year Brown kicked 4 and 5 goals in the two games he played against us. He's also in fine form of late, so nullifying his influence will be beneficial.

Aside from winning more out of the midfield, I'd like to see three tall defenders (O.Mc, Frost, and Lever) face he and Waite. Ideally I'd like to see Lever used as the loose to cut off the ball early, or block his ability to lead up forward.

What are your thoughts?

He is 200cm and has a good leap. Realistically he will take some marks and kicks some goals.  

Having 3 talls is too tall for mine unless they bring in mason wood. 

If we can reduce the 1:1s and the ball coming in quick over the back then this is the best way to reduce his output

I’m not so sure Lever plays like a Tall. I think Lever plays more like a Hibberd than a KPD.  I think it is absolutely critical to bring in Frost so Lever can go do his unaccountable, sometimes creative, sometimes big defensive spoil type thing.

 

Stopping fast ball movement into their 50.  If we have upfield pressure and ensure that our half backs work to slow the entries into 50, he can be chopped out by third man up, and can’t get the lead up marks.  Best if we can draw him up to the wings (he can’t kick it from there) but assume he will stay at home in the 50.

He will get at least 2 goals from free kicks.

He has one of the most punchable faces in the AFL.

Both times we played then last year we had both the Mac’s and Frost in the side. So I think we need to have a plan B & C this time. Cutting out his supply is the key and secondly playing a game that doesn’t bring the umpires in to the game so lots of play on and hitting up our targets in space. As stated on another topic site we have been slaughtered by the umpires every time we play North as they create stoppages and then we give up the free or turn over.

 By trying to limit the mismatches.

Numerous times in Hobart last year Jetta was left one out with Brown. Realistically, there’s not many defenders that can stop/spoil Brown when he can mark the ball at its highest point. 

Zach Guthrie was left to man Roughhead 2-3 times on Monday in the last quarter and Chris Scott mentioned on 360 that was not the plan. A breakdown occurred somewhere in the defensive structure, we need to limit them.

O Mac has stopped Hawkins and Hipwood.  He will get the job done as long as the mids put pressure on up the ground. 

Ben Brown gets his goals easily against us when we are pushing up, and get caught off guard. When they rebound we are always looking to scramble and get a fist in to spoil. Need a body on him constantly with great closing speed as Brown is quick off the mark. Frost suits this perfectly. Will allow Lever to zone off and play that intercept/spoiler for what he's known for.

 

 

Would help if L;ever isnt played out of position by the coaching staff..

Put him back to his natural role and he will chop off Norths forward entries all game. He is good enough to make Brown irrelevant. 

 

Edit -  seems everyone is saying the same thing.  Hopefully Goodwin can see the obvious.  It isnt the first time Demonland have been right and the coaching staff have been very wrong

If I was north I would play another tall fwd against us and bomb it in long as that is all their  midfield can do

so either way frost will be an emergency and a brought in with a late change depending on norths line up

Brown is a fine player agile for size and he will most probably kick some goals, However we have the match ups . Frosty, OMAC and Lever to combat both Brown and Waite. The numbers as well will drop back NO ISSUE  there.

North will have there problems, HOGAN, GARLETT and possibly Petrac to worry about. Hogan and Garlett are on and the boys are more prepared so let them worry about us more. I expect to beat them with a strong showing. The tide is finally changing.

It's called the zone defence. Every club, bar Sydney uses a variation of it, with some more aggressive than others (we have been quite aggressive under Goody, though interestingly not os much in the forts 2 games). Have done for the last few years. They do so because it creates quick ball movement and rebounding from defence and as a result scoring opportunities.

The risk is when exposed (for instance by poor all ground pressure) it can result in easy goals out the back, such as 2 of the goals Jessie got against the Lions or mismatches (such as Guthrie on Roughhead, Jetta on Brown).

The other issue for zone defenses is that it relies on the back six having great synergy, which is much easier said then done and takes time to build. Brisbane are trying to implement an aggressive zone and you could see from our last two games they have not quite got it right. But also when it works for them they can score quick goals.

Let Brown have his 4 or 5 and stop the like of Waites and the others.

If you look at many of our wins last year the other side kicked inaccurately which flattered us a little. Our forward line needs to deliver 120 points ... ie 16 goals 12 or thereabouts. Okay Hogan and Garlett might give you 8. Which means we have to get goals out of Melksham, Bugg etc.

Petracca needs to play up the field (he is our future) so we cannot rely on him for many.

Fritsch will be good for perhaps 2 goals.

Rakes... lots and lots of rakes in the F50.

Its a good point. 16 goals is a few, Hogan and Garlett arent going to kick 8 every week. That leaves a lot of goals to come from elsewhere up the ground.

I found myself going for Hawthorn on Monday due to Razor Rays last quarter effort to try and get Geelong over the line.
