You sometimes get a feeling about a recruit and I just think that Bayley will be a good player for us. He has got to this point by virtue of hard work and he has undoubted talent. I just think he will make it. He will vie with the likes of Harmes, Hannan, Bugg, Melksham, JKH and Kent for a spot and he could end up the best of them.

I'm not sure that JKH and Kent are really being talked about for selection at the moment (not that I'm writing them off either though).  But I was really quite pleased with the performance of all our small-medium forwards yesterday.  Pressure without and execution with ball were excellent I thought.

Really pleased he did well.  Playing well against that rabble perhaps is not an indicator for selection.  I’m sure the coaching team have a number of things they want to see, and need to see in context of better opposition for him to make it.  Hannan may still be in front of him re pressure and tackling, but he looks like a great addition to the squad.

He really doesn’t look like he should be able to play like he does. I hate invoking Robbie Flower but there is something fragile looking about him and yet he has that poise and class. I’m excited, I’d like to see him against a tougher defence, lets see how he goes in JLT1, if he keeps playing like that he looks set to earn himself a gurney in Game #1

Needs to find more of the ball and up his defensive game to lock in a consistent spot. That's a reality of a mid sized forward in modern footy. But his upside and nose for a goal is probably too good to leave out.

What I liked was how many smart little things he did:
- the crumb where he's read the flight and stayed down
- the low and fast kick to a lead
- the quick play on to dish off a goal
and my favourite of the day
- the punch when caught behind 2 opponents that set up a goal

I watched the replay this morning and he went well... but please don’t wish a gurney on him! ?

Surely his main competitor for a game will be Hannan?

Maybe he thinks Bayley is "home & hosed" for a Round 1 spot!  LOL

Let's hope the best thing to come from Jack Watts was Pick 31 of the 2017 draft, which we used to select Bayley Fritsch.

Fritsch threatened to kick 5 or 6 goals on the weekend. Should have had 4 at least.

I can not recall one game from Watts where he ever looked like kicking 5+ goals.

I’ve been on his band wagon since seeing him play last year. Was good to see him bring it at senior level yesterday. As someone else has stated, he could have kicked 6. Loved his attack on the marking contest when outnumbered too!

Currently a juicy $51 for rising star. If: A) he gets a game and B) he plays like that every week, could be the value bet of the year.

Most likely kidding myself but surely a tenner on him wouldn’t hurt?

Is he eligible?

Gee I just assumed he was because he was given odds. Shame on me for trusting Sportsbet. Looks like he turned 21 on the 6th December so might be 3 weeks too old. Will have to look into it further when I haven’t had a Sunday sesh.

Has to be an oversight by Sportsbet as he turned 21 before January 1 this year, rendering him ineligible. Would have put a cheeky 10$ on him if he were eligible.

There's one massive difference between Fritsch and Watts.

What is it ?

The teams they play for?

And one is scared of the air.

Just an aside, the following:

Apart from draftee Dom Barry, playing his first game since 2014 with Melbourne, and Jack Watts, Port didn't get much out of prized free agency signing Steven MotlopJack Trengove or Lindsay Thomas in their debut appearances.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
