Yep. In the Bluey Oscar averaged 2.5 votes out of 10 in the games he played last year. They know exactly where Oscar is at.

Yeah and they know where Jessie is at. He averaged only 3 votes out of 10. Hunt - 2.9 votes, Watts - 2.6. Even Clarrie averaged only 6 votes out of 10.

I'm just excited that we've got some terrific young talls on our list who can develop over the next 2-3 years and potentially play plenty of games together in our backline.  It's bloody great stuff!

I'm excited that we can draft players and talk about about not seeing them play in round one next year!  We can finally develop young draftees through the VFL with, perhaps the occasional taste of senior footy, to help in their education.  In the past, Petty, Spargo and Baker would be penciled into the round one team with people placing absurd expectations on them.  Let them build up their bodies and knowledge and then earn their place in the team further down the track.

Well said mate.  I also like the fact that, if they do get a run in the seniors, that they have the proper leadership and support around them to succeed.

Well said. I agree. Less pressure on them and less whinging from all of us. I am guilty of expecting too much too early off of draftees, and I think part of it comes from the mediocre performances off of our senior blokes. We are always looking for some youth to step in - because our seniors are letting us down. Since we have had Roos we have improved I believe. 5-6 years ago I'd be hoping Petty was the next big thing because we needed him to be. Now it feels as though it doesn't matter as much. We appear to have a ready made list now. There is no excuses for the guys in the side. Best MFC team I have seen in a long time. I do get ahead of myself but our side looks really promising. Hopefully Petty just develops at Casey and gets to learn his craft without expectation. We still have key position back in Keilty who will be ready before he is. That should ease the pressure.

Mark my words.  At least some of this year’s draftees will be labeled “duds” (or some other offensive derogatory term) by some on this forum if they don’t dominate at least some matches next season.

Petty should have gone in the top 10.

I know a player when i see one.  No idea where the phantom draft 'experts' had him, but anywhere outside the top 10 is laughable.

Great steal by Jason Taylor.

Totally agree, and what i liked was that he plays in front, takes marks in front and runs away..........

Huge upside ~ an Under 18 All Australian.

ESPN’s Chris Doerre (aka Knightmare) had him at 16 in his October power rankings:-

Harrison Petty (VIC)

Best position: Key defender
Height, weight: 195cm, 82kg
Recruited from: Norwood
Projected draft range: Second round
Similar to: Robbie Tarrant
October Ranking: 16
Rationale: Named South Australia's MVP during the Under-18 Championships. Petty is a relatively untapped talent who has improved significantly this season and is still growing, having shot up 5cm this season. Petty's potential as a still growing key defender with a late-year birthday sees him hold firm despite others rising.
Strengths:
Intercept marking
Reads the flight of the ball early
Takes marks at highest point
Clean at ground level
Effective ball user
Composure with ball in hand
Rate of improvement
Strong performances from limited exposure
Weaknesses:
Keeping balance in one-on-one contests
Strength solid but not as advanced as some of his peers
Capable but not a freakish athlete

According to Snoop Dog:-

HARRISON PETTY – NORWOOD / KEY DEFENDER / 195cm

Tall defender from SA that wasn’t really on my radar leading into Champs but was super impressed with him through them and in the subsequent games I saw. Just reads the footy so well and happy to peel off and intercept. His hands are assured and his ball skills are very good to. Seems to play the game with a lot of composure and could be a steal this late.”

Thought this maybe an opportune time for a happy bump

Harrison Petty.

Strengths:
Intercept marking
Reads the flight of the ball early
Takes marks at highest point
Clean at ground level
Effective ball user
Composure with ball in hand
Rate of improvement
Strong performances from limited exposure

I am very much looking forward to seeing how this guy develops. Big upside

When he was drafted Taylor seemed a bit surprised Petty had fallen through to pick 37 and said something like "we have a fair bit of talent in our defence but he is so good we just had to take him".?

Clearly our recruiters were impressed with him and I bet everyone is now very pleased that we took him!

Given the training and Casey reports he has done everything asked of him.  He isn't Jake Lever but he can certainly come in and play a role.  He won't be gifted games (no one does anymore, thank goodness) so when he comes in he will be deemed to be ready.

Edit:  Just saw this in a Team Selection article:   Petty modelled his game on Lever before the Demons plucked him with Pick 37 last November".

What a game to debut in, if selected this week!

Yeah I`m not sure everyone has read the article, he`s no certainty to be picked but good luck young fella IF you get the call up.

agree ... I had posted to point that out and then noticed the question marks on the posts above... totally confused me at first.

As one can't delete anymore I went for ???

Cannot see him getting the nod.... his time will come I am sure as will Oskar Baker's

Congratulations to Petts on his debut this week, a fairly high draft pick who looks like he will build into a great KPD. Hope he tears it up.

Awesome news.   Has the football nous and ability to cover for Lever... in fact hes a perfect replacement for that role.

No pressure though, hes a kid playing his first game.   Good luck Harrison.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
