CONCUSSION MAN

Angus Brayshaw's season was derailed by continuing issues with concussion to the point where there was no option but to take a long break from the game. He returned to play for Casey and then starred in his first game back for the club, even surviving a head clash in the early stages of that match. He played well enough in the last two games but it was clear that the loss of conditioning in games held him back somewhat. He sustained a neck injury in Casey's final game.

All at the club are expecting big things from Brayshaw when he comes back with a full pre season unhindered by any injury woes.

Gus was one of our best players when he returned in our second win against the Saints. Surprised me with how well he did playing half-back.

Still an enormous amount to like. Hopefully he can have a full preseason and play 22 games in 2018 as he makes us such a better team

Was brought back into the team far too quickly throughout 2016 and, coupled with his concussions during 2017, people started to forget just how good this kid was.  He reminded many upon his return, which surpassed even the most optimistic predictions and his bravery and persistence should be applauded.

 

A fit Brayshaw is like a star new player signing on to the club - very excited to see his 2018.

i am a massive doubter; he just looks like another 'good, ordinary' footballer

for mine, he looks like an afl player who doesn't have a true position - he's not quick enough by hand in close, he's not clean enough by foot to play outside, not powerful enough to play the forward / mid role and not quick enough to play half-back runner

he looks like a bit-part player who'll never actually go to the next level - i hope i'm wrong

if the right offer came along for him, or he was part of the make-weight to secure lever, i'd definitely entertain it

He is a tricky one to judge, loved his return game but then reminded me of my doubts in r23.

Think he offers a bit more than you are giving him credit for though. I don't think I've seen him beaten in a marking contest and his ability to go left or right is a major asset.

Don't see him being a star but could be a top 10 player for us.

I think he will be a late bloomer. He has great footy smarts and looked like he belonged when he finally made it back.

Goody needs to perceiver with him in the ones much like he did with tracking. This yo-yo from AFL to VFL hasn't worked for him.

Interesting, I saw him as a pure midfielder and I highly rate his skills, take away his interrupted last two seasons and swap them for a couple of full seasons and I think he'll be a gun. I also believe that he'll be able to adapt to a halfback or fwd roll. Fingers crossed.

The majority of that yo yo effect has been injuries.

IMO his biggest problem is staying on the park.

I am not covinced his body (well head I guess ) can go the distance.

If he gets a clear run at it he could become one of our most important young players.

Nah. Gussy is going to be a gun. Great footy smarts, Just gets to the right spots. If he gets a full preseason and some continuity next year we will see a progression from what he did in his first year. He is completely unpredictable coming out of congestion as he can go left or right  with equal skill.

He's an inside midfielder and he needs to have an injury free pre-season and season to get a leg up and get back to the pack of his draft class.

I disagree with those who believe footskills are a strong point. I'd say he has a neat short kick and his penetration on both his right and left probably fool supporters into thinking he is an elite kick.  Handy that he is comfortable kicking on his left however. 

What sets him apart is his overhead marking for his size, his tackling and scrapping ability and generally his football smarts. 

But he is as pure as a pure inside mid comes and that's where he needs to start next year. None of this Half Back nonsense.

Brayshaw had 24 AFL games on the board before Petracca made his debut. Petracca has now passed him with 39 games to 36. That is a huge amount of football for a young player to miss, and even in the games he has played there has been no continuity.

We saw glimpses of the form that made him a No. 3 draft pick against St Kilda, then he looked all at sea against Collingwood. Even though his VFL finals campaign ended early it was the right decision to play him, as he just needs to play football at any level.

Hopefully he can have a big pre season (no more head knocks), win himself a role in the midfield through the pre season comp and have a big 2018.

Good return V St Kilda but was below par after that and poor in round 23 when we needed people to stand up. We have a lot of inside mid types and need to boost other areas on the ground and when they go over each inside mid option particularly skill by foot he is certainly not going to be in the first few so creates a potential trade option if required.

Another reason I love the kid, last year he attached himself to Jones during the off season to improve his gut running, the kid definitely has the right mind set. Another reason that I'd love us to use our pick 10 and pick up Andrew Brayshaw if he's still there at that stage. Andrew has skill and he'd feed off the work that Gus is doing. ?
