Several posters have said that the FD had Watts' card marked from early in the year. If so, why would they have given him such good numbers in the Bluey in the first half of the year?  Surely they'd mark him down even if objectively he might have deserved the numbers.

The one question I can't get my head around is if Watts is as good and important to the team and club culture as people are asserting why would the club be kicking him out? Why would the club deliberately sabotage itself and weaken itself in its pursuit of success?

With regards to the "Jack didn't know" I find this incredibly hard to believe. Yeah maybe he didn't know the extent but how could he not know the possibility? He would've had constant feedback from coaches and leadership group throughout the year and I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have been made aware at his exit interview that the had clear issues that he had failed to address. So far we've only heard second /third hand reports of his interpretation of what he was told and when. Often people receive critical feedback or are told of potential changes but are either oblivious or in denial about it. We weren't in the room so we can't say what was and wasn't said. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter, even if not ideal, because the crux of the matter is the club has their reasons for moving Jack on which, as above, no has been able to articulate what they might be if they refute everything that has come out of the club over the last week or so.

Because Goodwin and company have personal grudges against Watts overridng their clear thinking on the matter. I just hope Goodwin is not plain dumb and can see his folly. Lost a lot of faith in him and in Jones who ratted on Jack according to reports. Used to love Jonesy.

Nothin like a Jack Watts thread to make us all turn on one-another.

Go you good things!

Will be nothing compared to the sack Simon Goodwin thread next year if we don't play finals.

This is absolute trash, Bobby. This is the sort of childish, uninformed post that is permeating this thread. It's disgraceful and based on nothing.

I think I'm done with this thread.

I'd be very surprised if he had the final say. Final say on list management would be with Viney and Mahoney.

Jack also had a say when he did f-all on return from injury and we lost key games in our run towards the finals

I am glad to see the support for Watts on here and out there; and not follow what the club has decided blindly.  There was a time when some posters questioned Neeld/Lyon at the start of the reign, only to be smothered with 'so you think you know more than Neeldy' or words to that effort.

Comparing Neeld era to Goodwin era? I think Goodwin has a few credits in the bank. The support for Watts is admirable. The abuse of Goodwin and the footy department as a side product has been deplorable. The times and the standards at our club have changed. We've lamented our culture and loser mentality forever on this board and now we're prepared to question those responsible for our upward spike. As I said earlier, every supporter and member has a right to question footy dept and club-wide decision making and processes but many of those in a rush to support Watts have basically written off Goodwin. I think he deserves better. Jack told the membership last night that we're in amazing hands. I agree.

in words of one syllable yes.

PJ is not a footy person..hes admin.  He'll abide the view of the FD as being sound until it shows  itself otherwise. Would you not ? Of course..that might be too late..possibly.

Your words and constraints as to what happens. UH :)  nice try.  I think the FD is close to good...not quite there. Why would YOU fire them ALL under that pretext ?

It's all good Bub. I was just commenting on the result of your assumptions.

i agree the fd needs some work on the pr side. But it has gotten out of control for a lot of reasons

My respect for Jonesy has increased. He's one of Jack's best mates and he's backing in the club. What does that tell you? This is what a team-first mentality looks like. As Nathan said last night, talk is cheap and we as a club have start showing what we're about through our actions. Trading Watts, for me, is an example of the club walking the walk.

So Goodwin and co like Jack? Funny way of showing it. Chucking out a class player for a pig in a poke draft pick. Hard to believe otherwise.

More like walking the plank. As I have already said watch us stagnate at best next season because of a serious lack of skill. Crazy tactics indeed.

On Men1116 today with Ox and Nasal, they mentioned that Watts was:

Obviously that stat doesn't include tackles then.

You've asserted that our senior coach and others within the footy dept have a grudge against Watts. The responsibility is on you to provide the proof.

You're absolutely right its not at all about Jacks popularity. But when some DLers go into overdrive about how poor Jack's influence must be on the young guns (as if its absolute fact)  you're basically talking out your rear end and have no idea. And i mean no idea. The challenge for the club will be to get the team over the emotional hurdle. I can assure you that when you hear them in the media they are merely towing the clubs line.

I can absolutely see why DLers get frustrated with Jacks intensity. At times i do too. But I'd rather have 3 Vineys and 3 Watts's in my team than 6 Vineys.

And id take on board Roos' understanding and commentary on the matter over anybody at MFC. He has no axe to grind.

It's not about his relationships with the players it's about the example he sets for them if he is allowed to continuously get away with failing to meet club standards. Do you expect the players to have no accountability for their actions to the club? What kind of precedent and example does that set? Where does it lead? To players cancelling training sessions because they're not up to it? To players deciding not to follow rehab programs? To players not pushing themselves to excel in their profession and take the MFC to that elusive 13th flag?

I think we're a bit scarred after Neeld/Schwab reign of terror and quite frankly who wouldn't be. But there was a litany of stuffups that went on throughout their regime dating to before Neeld was even hired. Roos hired Goodwin, tutored him, went through the transition process. Viney, Taylor, Mahoney have runs on the board, don't they deserve our support in this until proven otherwise? Oliver spoke highly of McCartney last night in getting the best out of himself this year and giving him the kick he needed.

I'm willing to support this mob until they prove otherwise. What other choice do I have? Cancel my membership in protest? The decisions been made and the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. This current admin and FD should not be crucified for the sins of their predecessors.

I carried a grudge against one of my employees at work.  She wasn't performing.  I had a performance meeting with her and directed her to do some things.... she didn't do them.  Now she works somewhere else.  Good result for me and my other employees and maybe for her as well (though I really don't care much).

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
