Heard a whisper that Jack is back !!

 NO DEAL!!!!

Contract been extended to 2021.  But then it’s worth nothing so Goodwin would still trade him out for peanuts. What a circus!! I thought MFC was beyond this. Only 1-year post Roos’ recovery era.

He won't be making a speech tonite ,and may not even announce anything for a few days yet.

Mahoney said they won't trade Watts unless a suitable deal is forthcoming.

I'm doing the apparently unimaginable and taking him at his word.

Moving past the Land bickering and most of what Dr.D writes...

Mahoney would simply be trying to send the message that we won't let him go for nothing.

And that hopefully, gets a club to fork over something of value.

Only problem - I don't buy it, Josh...

And I don't think other clubs will.

I think we blink and he goes for a 3rd rounder (ND40+) or I am not giving Mahoney enough credit and we keep him because we won't get value back.

Depends solely on motive/mission and acceptable outcome ( in the eyes of SG, TV,JM )

Define suitable ?

Bit like the length of string ...no ?

What??? Goes to Byron for a day and is castigated and admonished by the FD and his teammates? And all of DLand??

Ffs!

I'm predicting he'll leave for two years and then come back to the club and lift the premiership cup with Jesse - our very own Trent Croad

I am completely torn on this.

I've always been a supporter, but got right off Jack late this season, particularly after the injury.

Now I'm back to wondering what if....

Maybe this is the rocket that'll finally see the penny drop?  He's had plenty of rockets before, granted, but the worst he got from that was a spell in the twos...  this is much different.

I think I'd be much more comfortable with this, if this were happening this time next year, after this wake up call, cause if he doesn't get it now, I know 100% he never will.

Why do I care about this so much vs any other half decent player we move on?  No idea... probably because he has been so maligned over his career. He'd probably be the most talked about, scrutinized, meme'd, option #4 on every big footy poll, average player in the history of the game, and I've been riding the wave, hoping one day he'd prove everyone wrong.

Just hoped that'd be for us rather than someone else  :(

Glad to hear you say that bing.  So if he stays we can expect you to not bag him until he shows he hasn't improved.

I've never bagged him and aren't about to start, whatever the outcome here.

If he was only gone for a day that puts part of that rumour to bed and adds another strike against GNF's "mail".

It doesn't necessarily discount it completely though if the club weren't happy with his rehab just may have been in Melbourne rather than Byron

" Watts did not do rehab properly while away and lost so much fitness he was useless on his return "

I read that from GNF as Watts not rehabbing properly the entire time he was away from playing, so when at home, when he had a day off, wherever and whenever he wasn't at the club... etc.  Not just the Byron trip.

Certainly would explain why he appeared to do a reverse Viney and take double the time to return from a two week injury.

Sorry, I don't believe a word of this, especially the bolded part. He was only gone for a day - check the comments section of this Instagram post from that trip where he says he's only in Byron for 24 hours.

Maybe flying up and down in a day was bad for his rehab? Maybe he went to Byron but also didn't spend enough time rehabbing?

Garlett and Watts had similar injuries. Why did it take Watts 4 weeks to come back from what we were told is a minor hamstring tightness?

Or......the hamstring tear was worse than first diagnosed?

Because we're not always told the truth?

Jack might make his case to retained by showing a new aggressive attitude. I predict him to do a Kanye and insist during Clarry’s acceptance that Hibbo actually deserved it.

Interesting to see the comments...all of them. I'm heartened to read some have never bagged Jack..I must confess I have. In the earlier days  Jack managed to join an illustrious club club of "which Demon"  i.e  the one who'll come out to play or the lazy shlt. There have been numerous over the last decade ( at minimum ) .

Over time Ive come to accept Mr Watts for what he is. A very good player with limitations in some respects and sublime skills in others.  He is not that Square peg some require ..hes the round one.

Jack , to be perfectly honest reminds me a little of my own son. I'll explain. Like many parents without realising it I came to want him to be like me.  I have been fairly sporty over my journey. Not really a sport I couldn't play...not necessarily well but able to participate.  I possess all the requisite skills to perform adequately in mat regards. I was quite good at some.  my son despite wanting to please his Dad inherited all of his mothers prowess.. Totally fn useless at sports..lol.  He tried...and tried.. and even surprised some.  But it wasnt for him.  I had to come to terms with what he was, not harp on what he isnt.

This is the thing. You play to strengths. Hardwick for years tried and tried a formula which didnt work for him , his club , his list.  Youd only get so far before its natural ebb would push back. He learnt to change ( with help arguably ) to learn to figure out how best to use what you DO have available , to mould a team to fit , and a style that works for them . Results are impressive arent they? I wouldnt mind that club.

Make no mistake we ARE the new Richmond..the Ninemons as I cynically call ourselves.

So what is this old bugger on about. ?? It's horses for courses and understanding what you DO have, as opposed to planning for what you dont.  old school Asset Management.

Jack in the last couple of seasons HAS actually stepped up. He just doesnt fit  the image that the incoming powers that be see as ideal. He doesnt measure up to what the leadership see as requisite. He actually has more football skills than all of them combined but not the supposed work ethic.. He's '''you know"  " Private School "   thinks he can cruise through.

Here I must say  his efforts arent probably in some respects Spartan. Hes not that kind of player. Should that alienate him from being productive ?

What always seems to happen is when the Noobs come to town in Management they often want to invoke their idea, their image , of what is good and workable. That's one kind of Noob. Another takes time to assess what he has to work with and plan according with a view to encapsulating as much of the vision as can be done.

I see Goodwin as somewhere in between. He is perfectly within his rights to do as he sees fit but it may well be sage to bend ( as a tree ) to accommodate what you have, as opposed what you don't.

It is curious that  whilst SG and Co see the glass as half empty , other teams see a glass at least half full.

Watts' talent doesn't come along to often. Not many could pull off the tasks thrown at him as he has done.  Still this is not good enough ?

He is actually a very good role player..He plays any number of roles. Is he gladiatorial ? No...Never will be . A pea heart as suggested by some ?  He's withstood the barrage of not only the tag of most clubs but the animosity from within. He still smiles  and runs and wants to play for the jumper.

If he goes as I suspect then we as a club have a lot to learn.

If he goes he goes. If he goes for peanuts..We are beyond dumb. If he goes for equals.., then why bother ? If he goes for overs we are genius .

Lets see how clever this club actually is.  For those that think we cant stuff up...Norm says Hello

No doubt jumbo... but given his generally laconic demeanor and playing style (perceived or otherwise), it is not inconceivable to think he may put a bit less effort into rehabbing than other more dedicated players, is it?

End of the day Robbie was full of optimism for him!

Good enough for me!

If Jack does stay, pulls his finger out and plays to his capabilities it will be one of the great footy stories. Lots of ifs though.

I would be very happy to see Watts stay on Goodwin's terms.

To end  up with a fully committed and self motivated Watt's is probably the best possible result.

For that to happen I would suggest that the player would need to acknowledge his failings and commit to do better and the club would need to trust him again.

Not beyond the realms of possibility.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
