Dom Tyson, NDS 9 (Christian Salem) & NDS 57 (Jayden Hunt), traded by GWS for NDS 2 (Josh Kelly), NDS 22 (Darcy Gardiner) & NDS 72 (Pass)

Fair enough - forgot about Jayden Hunt, but it was high-risk (Pick 57).

Darcy Gardiner was on-traded in a 3-way deal with Port Adelaide and Brisbane - GWS got Rory Lobb out of that deal.

End result was a player who gets the ball a lot but butchers it (Dom Tyson), a player who got dropped to the VFL late in the season, and a pretty good half-back, for an elite player and a reasonable forward-ruckman.

My main point is that we had to take those risks back then, but not now.

We need to toughen up in our assessment of our playing list - not sure why so many people on this forum seem to be justifying a team full of players who wasted an opportunity to finish 8th, for goodness sake. We haven't won a premiership since 1964. I hate watching players like Tyson win the hard ball and then waste it.

With Priddis, Mitchell retiring and Masten possibly moved on what would WCE expect to give up Gaff? Could cost a lot.

Get Gaff.

Huge tank. Runs runs runs. Perfect wingman.

Could be another piece in a premiership win puzzle.

You're right. He doesn't just run though, he knows where to run and reads the play well. I was a knocker but I'm on board now. My knock was the tackle count, but he's always providing an outlet which is probably what we're missing.

Imagine the situatuon we'd be in if we took Kelly and he didn't come on the way he has. We needed depth and a bit more of a risk free path

He ran kms tonight and did absolutely nothing, you do realise he was lining up on Whitfield and Scully, not a fan, get your own ball!!!!

With Priddis and Mitchell now retired, you can bet your bottom dollar Gaff won't be going anywhere.  He has made no indication he wants to move and all we've got to go on is a flimsy rumour.  He's had numerous chances to come back to Victoria and has spurned them all.  I can't really see it changing now.

Hey Chook, just wondering if you could divulge those murmurings after WCE's defeat last night please.

25 touches, 1 contested. I'd be more keen on him if he did win a little more contested footy.

He does offer some things that we don't have, in speed, skills, run but he also doesn't have the attribute we value above all others.

Agreed.  Plus (career averages):

- Doesn't defend nor put pressure on the ball carrier:

  • 1% things (.86 per game).
  • tackles  (1.8 per game).
  • contested possessions ( 6 of 25 per game).

- Doesn't help the team score:

  • i50 (3.6 per game).
  • goals (.35 per game).
  • goal assists (.52 per game)
  • clearances (2 per game)

- Doesn't show signs of being able to defend up forward or in the mid.

- Hasn't impacted in finals.

In summary, he is not an impact player either offensively nor defensively.

Admittedly, he had a good year when he made AA in 2015 but hasn't shown a lot since.

I know stats aren't everything but over a long period they do tell a story.  Based on his stats and DL's penchant for aggressive, go in hard players, he would become the new DL whipping boy!

Being able to run and once a Dees supporter isn't enough to gain my vote.

3.6 inside 50's a game seems pretty good over a career. 81st in the AFL this year, 51st last year. That's 80 inside 50's a season. I don't know what our goal kicking efficiency on average per game is for inside 50's, but if he's contributing to 10-20 goals year from inside 50's, 11 goals from goal assists a year and 7 goals a year, then that's still contributing to anywhere between 20-35 goals a year ? It's all a bit confusing really, but he still is an upgrade on many of our 'developing' players, at a glance.

Edit: His stats seem similar to Zaharakis with a slight disposals and metres gained superiority in favor of Gaff and with 2 years youth difference, Zaha was offered a 4 year deal recently. Probably proves he's not worth a first round pick unless was had some guarantee he could reach his form from 2 years ago. He's a 10 possession better player than Melksham but understandably playing in a different position, with similar all around stats otherwise. Probably somewhere between pick #20-25 then?

Watched him closely on Saturday because of the talk on Demonland. Hardly hit a target. Can forgive inside mids for lower kicking efficiency but not outside ones. To use a racing term - prefer others.

Im not putting a line through him based on a quiet final vs the best midfield in the comp. He played great in the ELimination final vs Port.

He has played big finals before and hes exactly what we need in our midfield to balance it out .

I think he fits our needs at the moment. We are sadly lacking in outside run, but I don't think he'll fit Goody's contested footy brand. In fact I'd go so far as to say he doesn't get within cooee of many contests.

Jimmy whatshis name says Hi

Was meant to be the great white hope cheezus I'm still filthy!! on that Draft BLUNDER!! outside run ??? Can he run??

Stretch Nup

So we still need outside run eh??

So A fit Viney, Clarry Choo Choo and a venerable Chunky Jones, plus Dom Tyson and Tracc having an impact on the ball

GAFFFFFFFFFFF     PARK   YES!

I really want an outside mid, and although I have never been 100% sold on Gaff, he is definitely the sort of player we need. Whitfield is the other one who would slot in nicely who is somewhat attainable.

Anyone who watches Gaff more care to comment on his kicking? I know Whitfield barely misses a target, so wanting someone similar.

gaff is not elite but he's worth getting.....at the right price. However i think he will be too expensive

It's funny, when Melbourne were still in the hunt I was all over any piece of footy news as soon as it came out. But since I have dropped off big time, and did not even see that. Oh well, if not Whitfield, then Gaff maybe? Any other quality A/B grade outside mids available?

They seem to be rarer than match winning key forwards these days.

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
