Ive been thinking this for a few weeks too. It has probably been messed around by our injuries and suspensions.  And ever probably cut it a bit fine.  But yeah it wouldn't surprise me.

Tapering off for the post season [censored] up.

"tapering" is another used to p.ss off supporters. Maybe we have been excessively "managing " players behind their backs and that is the reason for the sudden decline.(b.s) To be honestly truthful when Gawn came back to ruck and Hogan returned we were not the same. Just a coincidence dear Watson.

Maybe so, but for JC to come back in 3 days after his injury report - fair effort

The Carlton doctors said he was dead! So he was probably just sleeping off a hangover..

No, tapering doesn't really apply to team sports, or across a longer period (such as the finals). Also, it's too early to be tapering for events that are still a month away, and tapering isn't just "taking it easy" at all, it's about shifting the emphasis, with very specific (but reduced) loads. You still need to perform at peak levels, just not as often or for as long.

If we were deliberately resting players, that's something else - but apart from Hannan, I can't see that we're even doing that.

Daniher did this in his later years (every second year of course).

It makes even more sense now with the bye round before the finals. Run them into the ground and then get the week off, come in to the finals in peak fitness.

Even if we haven't (and I suspect we have) increased our training workload in the last fortnight we have lost two interstate games that really didn't suit us.

north knew how to play Blundstone arena with the wind factor, which is uncommon in football today.

GWS - one of the only sides that could actually beat us in the finals had a lot go right for them and they only got us in a 15m burst. We will learn from that. The last team that smacked us like that in a short period was Gold Coast and Nathan Jones single handily got us back in the game. He's second up next week. BTW hope the umpires watch Gawn v mummy in the ruck more closely in the finals.

I'm not going to continue an argument based on an oversight on my behalf.

Jones played, I didn't watch the game and still thought he was a week away from playing.

my bad. Apologies.

Who the heck would taper and put themselves in the position where they have to win 3 out of their last 3 games to just make the finals? Odd. tenor.gif

Don't know about the Adelaide-based teams of their flag-years (and the connection to Goodwin), but Port definitely did this in 2013 or 2014 and suffered the same flat-spot. Ramped up the training loads with the intention to taper for the finals. A mini-preseason toward the end of the year. Would be ballsy if that were the case with us, and there's enough evidence that we're tired for other reasons, but if we romp it in and it eventuates this was indeed what has been happening then I will build a extra-special alter to Simon.

This thought occurred to me this week after a couple of really flat performances.

A few years ago it was common for top teams to go off the boil for a few weeks in the lead up to the finals.  This was often put down to the players being put through a heavy load of training so that they would be primed for action in September.  I seem to recall both Adelaide teams that won flags went through a flat spot close to the end of the season.

Noting that Goodwin was very much involved in the success I wonder if it might be a reason for the apparent lack of energy displayed, particularly in the last 2.5 weeks.

In addition, Goodwin keeps repeating that it only matters where you finish after R23, maybe the coaches expected a drop off.  Although its noted that if they did they have cut it very fine ?.

Anyway, it was just a thought. Have any regular trackwatchers noted any heavier than usual loads?

We have been "tapering off" since round 9 1965 I believe.

Now in all seriousness, this is an interesting post.  Those Adelaide teams who won in 1997-98 DID do a late season taper program that they credit with their success in the finals - Goodwin was obviously involved in that.

I know this because I distinctly remember a radio interview with that great snake oil salesman, Danny Corcoran while he was working for us, said in 2004 we tried the same "peaking program" after being 14-4 after round 18.  Didn't that work so well for us then! Who knows what sports science says now.

We know we have the tools to make and then do well in the finals.

It's been a wild season for pretty much every single team in the comp, lets just wait see what happens in the washup after round 23.

Lol no he didn't.  We were just always found out by better teams once our easy schedules were finished up. Whenever we travelled, played a top 5-6 team or had any less than a 7 day break, we lost. Once it hit round 11 we turned to mash and were constantly found out. Daniher resigned in 2007 because he knew his 2003-2006 rebuild was shot. That said we would have bounced back within a year or two and probably won a flag had we supported him and he had the urge to stick around. Think he just grew tired.

Any tapering is purely incidental.

Having half a team out with injury,  punching blokes in the head,  coaching inexperience, poor  individual form and some questionable decisions by fitness staff perhaps more likely reasons for the side's form.

Time will tell, starting this week ,when we see if the energy is back. I still think the forward line is iffy and Hogan made a difference after a he got his match timing right and Hannan is a significant contributor. As for the North game, we lost by 4 points got smashed in the last 15 minutes by a strong mature midfield who out muscled us and don't forget they flogged Adelaide down in Hobart and kicked 10 with the wind.

The order is win the next three games and we will play finals

lol

No, there is no grand plan with the inability to finish off an inferior opponent and the coaching howlers against GWS.

We are a team entirely capable of winning the next three weeks and from what I have seen the last few weeks - it will be in spite of our coaching staff.

So no, there is nothing 'brilliant' bubbling beneath the surface.

It's escaping gas...

I think the topic should be are we loading our players, tapering is the end result.  You load up you program and then taper off to get the full positive effects.

I don't think we have, I think we have just come to the end of our season.  We play high intensity football, not the most naturally talented side we have to work hard to win games.  I think our players are done and will be surprised if we win 1 of our last 3. I hope I'm proven wrong but since the first half V Port, which Is the best half we have played for a long time, we have been flat.

Daniher ran "mini preseasons" before the finals to try and get a fitness advantage over the other clubs. That is fact.

You dont have to be a biblical scholar to observe the overuse of the football by our players. The skill level are substandard and wasted disposal into the forward line is beyond belief.I watch our players who basically panic and dont know how control possession. What happened to leading into space instead of bombing away.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
