Been on here for 12 years, and can say I have had my fair share of personal barbs thrown at me, and it has never really bothered me. I don't take it personally, I'm just glad I have a place to talk about the mighty dees every odd night.

But Adzman, this misses the point. You are not a player struggling to perform, struggling to keep a place in the side.

Ive been away a few weeks but shortly before I left I read an article about Matt Jones, who as I recall it, indicated that he and other similarly placed fringe players, were deeply affected by criticism on sites such as this

for those who rubbished the original post and pointed out that players of old didn't suffer effects from comments on social media, the fact is that there was no social media till recently. It's a new ballgame!.

my sense is that players are just as likely to be affected by hurtful, personal comments and that we should be sensitive to that fact. Apart from anything else, it will assist our cause if we have confident, determined players, not looking  over their shoulders

Agree with Danelska. No one can assume the adverse effect that negative, personal comments have on anybody else, and as such should respect the differences by exercising caution. The biggest issue for mine with online forums in general (and Demonland is by comparison excellent, well done mods) is the protection of anonymity. We all know that 'trolls' and cyber-bullies are a blight, but they only exist through anonymity. No accountability means no responsibility. As a matter of interest, how many of you responding to this topic (or any) would modify the nature of your posting if you were identified by your real names?

This last part is very sancitimonius.

Of course you must be right. The question remains however. Care to answer it?

What sort of "hurtful, personal comments" are you referring to ?

Its not an issue for me...I find as I get older and more confident and grow(or try to) as a person, I care a lot less about other peoples opinions about me. Not that I don't give a rats about some opinions but just content in my own skin not to sweat the small stuff as much.

I think you have a point in that its important not to say anything that you wouldn't be prepared to own up to and be held accountable. (If I can presume that was what you were in fact saying).

My 2 cents is that this site like any other (despite the fact we all follow the same team) is still a microcosm. Like anywhere there are always going to be people who lack people skills, are impolite or just plain rude tossers and as such will result in inappropriate posts.

At the end of the day, I'm the first to admit that like my footy playing, my knowledge, tactics and insights of the game and club are just as limited. I'm not that upset if I'm not the greatest commentator of the game but it is funny that some think that not only that they have great wisdom, but respond to others if their views are gospel. I often appreciate the humour of some of the posters more than their wisdom.

PS Having reread  your post, I only called it sanctimonious because the word you was used instead of us, which in fairness may have been more grammatical than attitude in which case I apologise.

Forgiven. Having lived pre-Internet, thus pre-forum and social networking, I don't think there's any doubt that having the anonymity it provides changes the nature of people's discourse. The worst variation is trolling and cyber-bullying, where people attack, belittle and spread hate just because they can do so with impunityor so profiling tells us. Of course Demonland has none of that, but equally I have no doubt if posters on here were face to face rather than behind avatars in front of a keyboard, they would be more respectful.

I used 'you' not 'us' probably because I post under my real name, and because the question asked I knew my own answer to.

Yes and no.

There is gentle banter among a few of us.

There was genuine aggro but two of the bigger bozos behind that have been given their marching orders.

Step into the way back machine and you would find this was a totally different place. And with good reason.

I think now we are winning more, no one is as testy. 3 years ago when Saty used to put on one of his special 'performances', I could think of at least 3 people or more (myself included) who would jump down his throat. These days we usually just roll our eyes and just accept it is part of him being himself (which contain good and bad parts).

I think if we also sanitize the board too much, we also lose out on things that in hindsight might have been annoying initially but in the end had unforeseen positive consequences. While they have the market cornered on waffle at times, BBO, Biff, Daisy and their ilk bought a lot of levity to the board with some of their in jokes during 2012-14. I can tell you that stuff bought some light heartedness to the place when it was DESPERATELY needed.

The flipside of this is that without the medium of text, some of us would have no voice. I find I can't gather my thoughts and articulate them quickly enough when discussing verbally, and my brain seizes up in a way that just doesn't happen when writing online. Often I end up saying nothing at all.

Totally agree Nasher. The eternal double-edged sword.

Stuie was the master of this.

saty is also pretty good at dismissing points without actually providing his own.

I do provide points unfortunately they are at such a high level of intellect, that others have difficulty comprehending

I can't be bothered half the time either coz the handful of experts with superior footy knowledge on here, cant and won't accept a contrary view to their knowledgeable opinion

Do you have an opinion on why you haven't backed up your statement above with fact?

Because I don't need to saty, any poster who went through your posts would see the amount of times you dismiss any negative views of players without actually disputing their point based on "the coaches know better" or " but I talked to him and"

im sorry I've hurt your ego.

I admire your love for the footy club and the players Saty but this often appears to cloud your judgement when a poster disagrees with you or has an opinion of their own concerning a player. I think the issue posters have with your replies is you often become patronising, telling them that they must "know better than Goody" etc etc.

Living on the other side of the country, I've always enjoyed your observations and reports on training though.

How could you not have enjoyed it.

This is on topic, of course my replies to some are patronising, they make a statement and because they have made it, it is 100% correct, if somebody disagrees, they are 'delusional'

Like JKH not being AFL standard, I had actuaLly spoken to JKH and knew exactly what he was sent back to Casey to work on and with the Development staff we have now and his commitment we would see the improvement next time he got in the AFL side.

Of course because this wasn't the 'accepted' by some I was, as per the norm, accused of defending players just for the sake of it.

After JKH''s performance at the weekend I may defend some more

Ha. You must be fun at parties.

Hang on a sec...I just need to go to the loo whereupon I can respond to your contention via text message.

Is this result of being raised with the internet at a young age? Or are you just big on precision?

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
