POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 4

Demonland

Weideman's lack of possessions would be less of an issue if he applied any sort of pressure when the opposition had the ball. He flew into a few packs which resulted in goals for us but he is a total non event once the ball is on the ground or in opposition hands.

There was still 3 minutes left. They tried to chip around the backline with 2.30 left. Too long to go into your shells.

Instead of [censored] around with it in the backline, we should've moved it quickly forwards.

I have no idea why we try this tactic when the majority of our backline players are either poor disposers or poor decision makers. Apologies to Christian Salem.

Weiderman should drop himself. Viney is the one i dont understand because Ive seen him play.... 10 times better. Finding touch seems a strange thing. Great Captains goal tho.

I think Goodwin has to challenge the players about that 3rd quarter. Simply didn't want to stop the rot. Vince, Viney and Jones just let it happen. We aren't the footy club we were, and we can't accept our leaders going missing.

Those who think that Hogan and Lewis cost us those games are wrong. Last week we cost ourselves with our poor kicking, this week it was the decision not to turn up for the third quarter.

Having Hogan and Lewis would've improved our percentage, but we should still be 4-0, not 2-2.

That's on Goody and the playing group.

After that 3rd q never deserved to win but did anyone see that Freo player get his foot to that last goal?

They review all sorts of BS but not that????

It was a goal. He just got his foot to it.

100% agree. Even if you just flood back and stop the momentum, it's inexcusable to give up 8 goals in a row to any team ever.

You blokes make me laugh       The last few years after being 22 points down at 3/4 time would have seen us blasted off the turf and endured a 50 pt loss.

Yes we played a really bad quarter and hit the front again in the last 1/4    At least we fought back and nearly pinched it

We are young but every game we improve and learn

As for all the super coaches out there........Give me a break......

Hogan and Lewis would've been so bloody handy these last two weeks! I hope they realise that. Hogan is just so critical, one for the obvious reason of a target up forward, but also for those bailout kicks up the line. Some onfield leadership (Lewis) could've been the difference both weeks. I consider both those blokes highly culpable for our losses.

Pretty keen to see Hibberd in the side. Eager to hear how he goes on Monday!

This and last week were a pretty good assessment of where we are at.

Put bluntly, the issue is not really effort or mental resilience. People will complain about the third and I hear them.

That being said, if we just think teams will lie down and submit to our inherent dominance then we will fully deserve to lose every single time. Freo were always going to fight (though perhaps not to the extent we let them).

We fought back pretty damn well in the last. That would NOT have happened in years past (though that is a pretty low bar to set).

Our issues pertain to polish and, in Goody's case, team selection.

Weid may be a great player but the 'play the kids at all costs' was put to bed I thought permanently during the Roos era. Weid should not be out there at the moment. His first few games were impressive but now he is like a rabbit in the headlights. Send him to Casey for a spell.

We could and should have been 4 goals up in the first. Scoreboard pressure is a wonderful thing and had we put the foot on the throat early, we may have demoralized them to an extent that they couldn't come back. Sadly, too many opportunities missed then and I believe that hurt us later on.

Positives were:
Spencil: I thought Sandilands beat him but I wasn't worried that it would be a humiliation at any stage. I actually felt comfortable with him in there.

Watts: He is steady more than spectacular these days. Very much a Jack Gunston or Paul Hudson at the Western Bulldogs type. Chips in with 2 to 3 goals consistently and in soccer terms, he is the guy who takes the corner to set up team mates to score.

Clarry: The kid has amazing vision.

Excellent game to watch. Bitter pill to swallow when we lost.

Next week, it's the Toigs. Hopefully, this can act as a spur to get us back over .500 again.

The only way I can see this being a positive is if it makes the club take a good hard look at itself, like the way a couple of big losses in 2006 'woke up' the talented but underachieving Geelong team.

Goodwin's first crisis, I'm sure I'm not the only one watching intently.

Crisis   what  crisis      We are 2 and 2   and probably should have won the 2 losses

People get so carried away by a narrow loss to a pretty good side

Cant beat a rebuilding Freo at the MCG.. forget finals, its not happening.

They are a good team Freo. Midfield is elite. We had no answer for Mundy, Fyffe, Neale, etc. Johnson back playing well and McCarthy firing they will worry many teams this year.

That was pathetic. There's any number of things wrong with today's effort but the fact that we'd dragged ourselves in front only to let it go - that kills me.  All they had to do was not be [censored] for 120 seconds and they weren't capable of that.

If our coaches have any idea on how to motivate the player's, i'd throw the game review out the window and just make them watch the third quarter at the start and end of every training session this week.

Where to begin with this one?

Deflating.  Frustrating.  Vomit inducing.  That's a really, really tough loss to take.  One of the toughest we've had in years I think.  In the past we may have commended the effort, but we know our list and our side IS better than this.  We got on top in the second and then got ahead of ourselves.  They got on top through the midfield and we couldn't stop the rot, which isn't good enough.  I won't blame anyone for going right over the top on this board over the next 24 hours.  This is a game we should never have lost and I was right to feel nervous about it going in.

But, in the end, we also need to look at the positives (as everyone covered the negatives).  Oliver - another 27 touches, 14 contested possessions, 10 clearances and 8 tackles.  The kid is a freak.  Jeff Garlett is playing his best footy for the club at the moment, while some of the kids like ANB and Harmes also put in good stints.  Spencer was good in the ruck and got forward to jag a few goals which were terrific, while Watts again stood up to be counted.  Without Hogan we still had 29 shots on goal which shows that whatever we are doing forward of the ball is working.  That is something to be pleased about.

The problem for us today was what happened in the midfield.  Outside of Oliver and, to a lesser extent, Tyson, we allowed their mids to dominate AND hit the scoreboard.  Mundy, Neale and Fyfe combined for half of their goals (8) and we simply cannot allow that to happen.  We allowed McCarthy too much space as well and we paid dearly for it.  You would have thought the days of letting teams kick 8 unanswered goals were behind us.

The one thing I want the players to take out of today is for this to REALLY hurt.  To cut them deep and to make a commitment to the club to make sure this doesn't happen again.  I want them to come out next week against the Tigers and make a statement, and that statement is that this weekend was an aberration.  We've got an opportunity to put it right and there are still 19 rounds of footy left, so we have time to make amends.  Let's just hope we can do it.

Happy wrist slashing everyone.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
