Was it terry wallace that said Schache would be the bargain of this century if you can get him for a late first-round pick considering his upside as a #2 pick. We're essentially making the same play on Balic with 45 or so.

Hang on, mate. Balic was a pick 38. How does this compare with Schache? I wouldn't have thought the comparisons are that striking.

I just mean we're taking a risk on two kids one of which whos barely played a game and both were injured in their draft years and were meant to be higher and both have wanted to go home like Schache does. Fascinating to see the difference of opinion on a former #2 pick in Schache not being worth a punt with a second round pick as opposed to the excitement on DL over what will be a #45 pick in Balic.

I haven't seen any excitement on Demonland with Balic, but then maybe I just haven't engaged in those discussions. I'm very meh on him.

I'd put that difference down to key forwards and the expectations on them.

Balic can be useful half forward, wing, back, midfield and there's probably 8 players spots in the team he could get a game in. I expect he'll be competing for a spot in the team very early in the season.

Schache might be 4th in line as a key forward behind Hogan, McDonald and Pedersen. Heck maybe even 5th behind Weeds, and we might go with only 2 tall forwards.

He also probably won't want to give up the decent cash contract he signed mid year.

Nobody wants the Shack!

I personally believe he will play his best footy at a Victorian club. Only in his 2nd year and is at the same developement stage as Josh Kennedy was at his age. And is 199cm.

If we could trade Watts & 27 to the Cats for 21 & 22.

I think Picks 21 & 22 for Schache & 42 could be sufficient.

Picks 21 & 22 would go a long way in the Lions securing Cameron from the Crows.

Thoughts?

Brisbane want a first round pick but I don’t think they’ll get one, haven’t even had a nibble.

I'm happy to be proven wrong but I have this vague recollection of Harley Balic playing very well against us early on possibly the first time we played Fremantle - from memory he was poised and silky. Anyone else remember this or am I off the mark?

Don't think so, o heard Wallace talking about him on trade Radio the other day and he said if the drafted was redone now he definitely wouldn't go at 2, probably not even top 20 and possibly not top 40.

Is this guy worth a look if not too expensive.

He was a number two pick so must have talent.

He may have been unsettled up north.

He can develop for a year or so and put on muscle.

He is big and mobile at 199 cms and 96kgs and would be insurance for Hogan, Tom Mac and Weid.

With JW going, another mobile forward would not go astray. Could also develop as that ruck/forward.

O'Rourke was a number 2 pick as well. Toumpas was a number 4 pick. Just saying.

Schache’s underage year was elite, and his first year at the Bears showed some promise before a terrible 2017 that showed he wants out back to Victoria

I can’t fathom the lack of interest in him

I expect a club will get him far cheaper than he’s worth

He did play in the round 4 loss (shudder), ended with 15 touches and 5 tackles.

He got 15 touches and a goal against us in that round 4 game.

Call me crazy, but I would be interested in schache if we can pay unders.

Thinking if we hadn't of gone for Weid in that draft (a mid or Curnow instead) then Schache would be of interest to us. But how would we know the number 2 pic would turn out like this and possibly be available at say pick 10..

20 (Watts), 27 and 2018 second round for Schache?

Forward line mix of Hogan, Schache, Pedo, Jeffy, ANB, Milkshake and a bit of Trac.  Weid developing at Casey until 2019 as insurance for injury or major departure.

Schache's competitiveness is my main concern.

I won't call you crazy as I agree. He would be great insurance for another forward leaving,  in the future, with JW presumably gone and/or Weid not making it.

His price has plummeted and I would take the chance on a 199 cm 96 kg 20 year old former number 2 draft pick.

You would get him for less now, but you have to get him to nominate us as his club. Brisbane will deal. I think you could get him for about the same as you get for Watts.

Would Snake Lever, the Schak and Balic be considered a successful trade period?

Yes.

A future star and maybe Captain.

A past and still young high draft pick.

A possible best 22 player.

If he toughens up I think he'd make a good ruckman in a few years time. Reminds me a lot of Brad Ottens at the same age.

I think we put an offer in. Two second round picks- 27 and 35. See if they bite. If not we could use a player swap between a few clubs.

Backline looks great, mids good apart from outside run, forward line potentially brutal.

Could Balic provide the outside run.

I just watched some highlights of Schache on YouTube. The kid can play. He's a lovely mark and a very accurate set shot. I would not be upset if we made a few calls here, especially with the potential departure of Watts and Weideman still developing.

Considering no one seems likely to give up a first round pick for him, an early second round pick could get it done.

There must be something going on with Schache. Clubs would normally be falling over themselves for a promising key forward.

Just watched his highlights on You Tube at the Lions and he is a big unit. Strong and tall and leads well, with an accurate kick.

Interesting comment from one Jonathan Brown " this kid is going to be star".

He has obviously had an emotional episode or period in his young life, but these can be helped.

I would try and get him. Could be a huge reward for little cost.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
