Thanks Dees.

Not worth a new thread but for anyone interested Jordan Lewis is continuing his weekly appearances on Tuesdays on AFL360.

Any pearls of wisdom or points of interest from the co-captain?

He's not long come on. Was initially upset about being made co-captain.

He was asked about Watts, still no straight answer. No decision made on whether or not Spencer will play round 1.

For a bit of fun he was asked in order who he would take from Petracca, Hogan and Oliver. Hogan first then Oliver then Petracca. He didn't think Petracca would take the news very well, while having a laugh.

No one deserves to play finals more than Jones, top bloke.

After watching that it was obvious that the Watts thing was definitely a training attitude thing not some specific metric. Said he was disappointed in him and gave him a clip around the ears.

Seemed unsure about Spencer playing.

Did he really say he was upset about Viney being co captain or surprised

Very disappointing that Healy, Brown, Dunstall & King pestered Nathan with repeat questions about the co-captaincy issue.  Presumably hoping he would blurt out something controversial to make a headline tomorrow.

Ended up being a wasted opportunity to find out from Nathan what he feels/thinks is different about his team in 2017

Disagree. I want to know how mentally tough he is. How much has it hurt him and will he be distracted by it? It seems not. I hope not.

Quite meh

Good looking bloke, though....

Just imagine if he had hair. Whew…!

I get the impression it hurt him but hes so professional he's found the positives in it.

Personally i feel its more an elevation of viney than anything about jonesy

Jonesy's probably said it before, (but I don't think anyone should mind me repeating it), that what has kept him at the club and what keeps driving him to be better, after all the hard times, is to be there when the club turns things around and has that success.

Committed, motivated, loyal - what more could you ask from your captain, gota love this bloke.

...And though he has troden a different path, I think Jack Viney is cut from the same cloth.

On a bit of a tangent, King implied that there was something a bit underhanded going on with Mitchell (and by inference Lewis - he's ours now, so defend him we must!!) getting traded to WC for pick 88 when compared with Deledio going to GWS for a first rounder and whatever else.

Last year Bob Murphy missed out on the Dogs premiership, I hope when we're in the Granny next he's there leading the boys out. He has given such a huge effort to the club.

First round draft picks to GWS are the equivalent of pick 88 to all other clubs. Seems to be a commensurate trade to me.

Nathan Jones found out from goodwin while they were both playing Golf with the Mcdonald brothers.

Loves being around the boys does Goody and its obvious they enjoy his company too.

Goodwin is a very competitive bloke. Probably told jones about viney just before addressing a crucial drive

Jones was not a happy camper about it

“... he said losing sole leadership felt like something had been ‘taken away’ from him. I think initially — and I’ll be completely honest — I guess through human nature, I was disappointed, frustrated,” Jones said...“At the time, being a super-competitive person, I felt like something was being taken away from me".

A bit surprised Jones would give so much away - usually this stuff is kept in-house and players give platitude answers and say not much.

Also surprised Goody told him while playing golf, usually these things happen in private especially as he knew the news would be deflating for Jones.

This was a 'Captain's Call' made by Goody.  Goody has made a few big calls on players before even coaching a game.

I greatly hope he has them right and are not 'rookie' mistakes.

At least we now know what Jones thought at the time, and where he is currently at.  By bringing that out in the open, there will be no "intrigue" if Jones has a poor start to the year.

Yes, Goody hasn't coached a game, but he was behind the scenes for the past 12 months, so has had great exposure to all players, and been able to do so without being the main man.  He has done a 12 month apprenticeship, which is so much more than what any other coach gets (those that don't go through a succession plan), which has to be of great benefit, especially when big decisions like this are made.

Personally, after watching the interview I am pretty confident whilst alot of it would be true, the media team would have encouraged him to be really open about it with a few key points to get across. Competitve, passionate but ultimately understanding about it all.
I agree with Jones last minute or so of the interview, that this will allow him to be captain for a longer period of time and the co-captain set up with an older player and a younger player (that is deserving) makes sense in the modern AFL climate and especially with our list profile.

From what Jones has said, it does at raise concerns about Goodwin's approach.  Add to that the Watts situation (where if it was Neeld, people would be blaming the coach for the player's poor attitude).  If Jones & Watts play well then the coach gets a big tick. If they don't and we are also losing games, watch all hell break loose on here whether justified or not.  Let's hope Goodwin knows what he is doing and it all works out well.

I think it says alot about how Goody wants the culture to be, no hiding things in private, everyone has a right to know what is going on. But also doing it while playing golf means they have quite some time to chat about it rather than Jones being told in an office and then walking out bitter. I like it, I dont agree with the decision but i like the approach.

I like the approach for the reasons you have said as well, more of a mate to mate chat. Not sure I would have done while playing with two other people though, especially two other players! All seems to have worked out fine and he would know the relationships better than us but I would have been very cautious of giving the news in front of two colleagues.

Once again, headlines belie the truth of the story.  The Age headline says "Nathan Jones miffed by Melbourne Demons' captaincy move "  He was "disappointed" and "frustrated", but he clearly is accepting of it and looks ahead.   So, to err is human, but to express yourself is a cardinal sin?  Once again, just bad journalism.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
