It's probably only a small crack, but it's definitely another crack.

Honestly, it would be really good if the Hawthorn Football club slid into an era of bitter recriminations and failure for a couple of decades.

Remembering just how many of their fans are both soft and arrogant.

Hardly.  He missed a session that he normally does as part of his management program, but didn't give the sufficient notice or explanation.  I highly doubt that it's going to derail his career or their season.

That said, I don't mind seeing the Hawks in struggle town.  They are well overdue.

Two of their favourite sons, past heroes, are gone and another on his way out.

It will be interesting to see how Clarkson and the club handle the Hodge exit when it comes.

The sands of time run out for all clubs and their players. That is the way.

However, the Hawks view of their superiority and self promotion of "the family club" line has worn thin.

 Like all families, this is partly myth and it appears that "the family club" is now far from perfect. Perhaps it will become even dysfunctional as the year progresses.   

However, I suspect that the HFC spin doctors will drop the family club line.

Was he on the sauce?

This is a bigger deal than people realise. Fagan was the culture man who rounded off Clarkson' harsh and ugly style. I am not saying Clarkson is an average coach - he is clearly outstanding - but the momemt Fagan leaves,  the relationship between player-leaders and club evaporates  (Mitchell and Lewis), or has a huge downturn (Hodge). 

Freefall might be too strong but a huge downturn is on its way at Hawksville. Roughead is a freak of a footballer and more responsible for recent Hawks success than people realise  but he is no leader like the three who have departed.

Hawthorn is the most successful club of the modern era (post 1960). At the moment the club seems to be on a slide which may take it eventually down towards the bottom of the competition. However if one looks back at the nearly 60 years since Hawthorn won its first premiership, 1961, its resilience has been remarkable. Maybe a decade or more will pass but I bet the Hawks will be back.

Question: has any club dominated the VFL/AFL over a similar period as Hawthorn has since 1961. 13 premierships. Sh*t I'm jealous!

Mandee, if he had said " Hodge suspended by Hawthorn leadership group for sledging Watts", then  he would have managed a Watts mention in the first post. Can do better.

I think this season will be the first where the Hawks start to fall away. I could see them bottom 4 in the next 3 years if O'meara doesn't come good.

It will really hurt them when Shaun Burgoyne goes down hilll

Collingwood 11 flags between 1902-1936 and Melbourne 10 flags between 1939-1964 probably the only others to come close. Fitzroy also won 8 between 1898-1944. None in the modern era come close to the Hawks.

I remember when Alan Jeans was appointed coach and everyone bar none were unanimous it was the beginning of the end of the Hawks after the successful Kennedy era. That was about 40 years ago. Unlike us they make a regular habit of a Phoenix like rising from the ashes.

Cannot see the Hawks sliding too far for too long. IMO they may not even slide outside the eight before rising again. 2017 is not 1907.

Claims they may dip to the bottom or spend 10+ years in decline are wishful thinking. Noble, nonetheless, I might add.

No disagreement Dee Dee, the facts speak for themselves. My comment had nothing to do with facts or the Hawks record of success.  

What am i missing here?

He missed a training session and is internally suspended by the leadership group.

Awhile ago he was caught drink driving and pretty much gets off scot-free.

So putting lives in danger is nothing and missing training is a big no no.

There must be more to this.

I, also, am interested in finding out which of their players are actually downhill skiers! (yeah, I'm a proper wit)

But seriously, it will be interesting to see who has had their limitations covered by the luxury of being able to play roles specific to their strengths, while the group of serious, determined stars kept the wheels turning.

Or maybe i would be more accurate to say the stars kept the wheels in the right places - Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Roughead, Burgoyne, and Gibson would have to be any coaches dream group, when it comes to keeping a game plan in order and keeping less experienced or alert players 'on task'. 2 of those six are now gone and the other 4 are all 30+, and while they have several other quality players, none are at that level of leadership quality.
